Video of me working with a customer and her reactive dog.
On the first couple of lessons Millie was lunging and barking aggressively at me (even without a dog) and Bravo. We did this video on her fifth lesson to show her progress. I think she has come a Long way in a short time! She's made such progress because her owner is very comitted to her training & helping her dog work through her triggers. She's really a sweet, happy dog who just needs a strong leader. Strong leadership does NOT mean abusive, it means consistent and competent guidance.
I hate the term "Reactive," ALL dogs React! It's HOW they react that is important. Do they react aggressively, friendly, wild, calm, etc.
Other "trainers" just take the same behaviors dogs have been doing Forever and make up new words for it! "Resource guarding" is another example. Which is food/object aggression, but "resource guarding" doesn't sound so harsh. While guarding their food/toys/stolen sock, etc. is natural instinctive behavior, it's also aggressive and dangerous for your family and guests. Making the term sound nicer doesn't mean the behavior is excusable.
Your dog/puppy needs to learn how to behave properly in order to be a safe, happy and healthy canine citizen and member of your family/community.
Someone I know was at the show and surprised me by filming my run with Bravo today! Thank you so much Susie!! πβ€οΈ

Somebody has good dreams on busy day care days. πβ€οΈ Watch til the end
Mojo
Watch to the end.
This is also the way to earn any dogs trust, not just fearful ones, to get them back inside, or come to you, etc. instead of yelling, chasing grabbing or trying to "trick" them to come to you. 'Cause when they come and you lunge at the them to try and "grab them real fast," you are teaching them NOT to trust you or want to come to you. This video is obviously just one example of earning trust.
People don't realize there is a Lot more to training and day care than just obedience or petting dogs all day.
People also don't realize there is more to being a good leader than just doing a basic puppy class when the dog is young. Build a relationship on trust, respect and understanding by doing bonding things like training that continues throughout their life, play games, fun activities like tricks, hiking, etc. even just watching a movie on the couch with them. You are their whole life and they just want to be with you and be included. There are so many ways to bond and have fun with your dog!
On our morning run picking up dogs Mojo says "Yes, I want to share your breakfast, mommy." πβ€οΈ
