This!!!
Boy is it hot outside! How do we keep our canine friends cool in this unbearable heat? Well it certainly is NOT by shaving their coats!
The fur bearing canine coat is composed of both guard hair and wool hair, or as we call it in the professional grooming industry the undercoat.
The guard hair protects your pet by reflecting sun light and protecting the skin from UVA/UVB rays. The canine epidermal layer is about half the thickness of human beings making their skin much more susceptible to various forms of skin cancer such as melanoma.
The wool hair, or undercoat, works like insulation by holding cool air near the skin. Dog's only sweat on the pads of the feet and the nose, and when overheated, cool themselves by panting. When the coat is shaved, the coat can no longer perform it's job and your pet will actually be hotter!
Shaving can lead to various skin conditions as well as post clipping alopecia in which the coat can sometimes be permanently damaged.Shaving also does not prevent shedding. In fact, your dog will now shed tiny slivers that are similar to splinters....all over your house.
The best strategy for keeping your fur bearing pet cool in the summer is to keep them on a regular grooming schedule of 4-8 weeks. Your professional groomer can remove the dead undercoat so that your pets' coat can properly perform its job and keep your pet cool and shed free!
