Meet Hazel!

This stunning 1-year-old is looking for her forever home. Hazel weighs 40-45 lbs and is a gorgeous mix, likely part Husky with a touch of Heeler, and she has the striking eyes to prove it. With her sleek black coat and tall pointy ears, she’s as beautiful as she is active!

Hazel is a playful and social dog who loves interacting with other dogs of all sizes and enjoys spending time with people. She’s crate-trained, knows "sit" (especially when treats are involved!), and would thrive with some obedience training to bring out her full potential.

While Hazel is a bit of an alpha, she does best with non-dominant dogs who are easy-going. She’s also very food-motivated and will need to be fed separately from other pets. Hazel would do best in a home with older children or adults, as she is still working on taking food gently. She’s also a counter surfer, so be prepared for a food-loving pup!

Hazel is smart, strong, and full of potential. She’s the perfect candidate for a family willing to invest in training and provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation.

If you think Hazel could be the right fit for your home, apply to adopt her today!

How Cold Is Too Cold for a Dog Walk?

While broad generalizations are difficult, cold should not become a problem for most dogs until the temperature falls below 45 F, at which point some cold-averse dogs might begin to feel uncomfortable.

When temperatures drop under 32 F, small breed dogs, dogs with thin coats, or very young, old, or sick dogs could be in danger if they spend too much time outdoors.

Once temperatures drop under 20 F, all pet parents need to be aware that their dogs could develop cold-associated health problems like hypothermia or frostbite when outside for extended periods of time.

Of course, most dogs still need to go outside to p*e and p**p when it’s cold. Usually, they will quickly take care of business so they can get back inside where it’s warm. If the snow is deep, shovel an area close to your door so they don’t have to fight through the snow.

Don’t leave your dog unsupervised outdoors when conditions are extreme. The best way to monitor your dog is to keep a close eye on their behavior. If you notice your dog shivering, acting anxious, whining, slowing down, searching out warm locations, or holding up one or more paws, it’s time to head inside and warm up.

Call your veterinarian if you notice any signs of frostbite or hypothermia, including sluggishness, confusion, severe shivering (which may stop as hypothermia progresses), and parts of the body that appear pale and are cool to the touch.

Meet Rosellen: Your New Best Friend Awaits

This sweet girl is Rosellen, a 3.5-year-old, 60+ pound bundle of love looking for her forever home!

Rosellen's Story:
She was found in January 2024 on a road between Tennessee and North Carolina, battling a tough case of heartworms. After receiving treatment, she's now healthy, happy, and ready to find her perfect match.

Why You'll Love Her:

Gentle and affectionate, Rosellen is a true love bug who thrives on cuddles.
She’s housebroken and well-behaved indoors, making her a wonderful companion.
She’s spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on all vaccines and heartworm prevention.
She walks well on a leash, though a harness works best as she’s still perfecting her leash skills.
Compatibility:

Rosellen is good with other dogs but may prefer a home without an alpha female her size.
She tends to chase running cats, so a cat-free home would be best.
She is very gentle and polite—she’s not a jumper and is calm around people.
Rosellen has a big heart and an even bigger capacity to love. If you’re looking for a loyal, sweet, and gentle companion, she’s the one.

If you’re interested in meeting Rosellen or learning more about her, please complete an adoption application at https://arfhumane.org/arf-adoption-application/. Let’s help her find the loving forever home she deserves.

Our Story

ARF is a 501c3 nonprofit foster group. Our official tax name is Humane Society of Jackson County, Inc. ARF rescues over 300 dogs a year, pulling over 200 dogs a year from the county municipal shelter. That is 198 dogs more than any other rescue group.

ARF performs animal rescue, spay and neuter assistance, public education, and adoptions. We desperately need foster parents to save shelter pets, as well as fundraisers, vet techs, and other volunteers. All donations to ARF are tax deductible.

Adoptions and low-cost spay/neuter signup are held at our adoption center located at 50 Railroad Ave., off Mill Street, next to the Lifeway Church in downtown Sylva. Our web site is http://www.arfhumane.org.
