You can't correct your dog and redirect until you first correct yourself. Understand if you're nervous and insecure your dog will show it and mirror that behavior.

When you're looking to add a dog to your family do not expect this. Adding a dog to the family also means you're adding another personality. The personality type will have an effect on everything including training. Be sure to do the research into the breed/personality you're interested in. Just because the dog is pretty may not mean it is a correct fit for your family. Please be aware too that if you had a dog in the past, and get a dog the exact same breed the behavior may not be the same. Just because they're the same breed doesn't mean the personality is the same.
If you have a family and consider adding a dog make sure everyone is on the same page. You want to be unified and set the same rules, boundaries and limitations. You want the dog to respect everyone in the house. If necessary write the rules down and post them on the refrigerator. This will save you a lot of trouble in the future. If everyone can't agree on the rules (and yes they need them) delay getting a dog. Its better on the dog to bring it into a peaceful environment than fighting.
Finally....remember be calm and patient with your dog! Enjoy your friend.

Observe your dog. You can learn a lot about them this way and watching their body language. It is a conversation and can be misinterpreted if not learned.

Good Buddy 411: A few basics about German shepherds.

If you have had a bad experience with German Shepherds or heard the stereotype I totally understand. I thought you should know a little about the breed. They are more than the stereotypes though.

German Shepherds are working dogs They require exercise to burn off the extra energy. GS love doing jobs being a part of the working breed. They are sensitive to emotions too. That's why a lot are service dogs. If you're anxious they will pick up on that and react. Some shepherds can become protective in reaction to anxious and nervous behavior displayed by their owner.

Some German Shepherds are vocal. They don't mean any harm by it that is just the equivalent of them talking. They have strong personalities. Some shepherds have working bloodlines while others come from a "pet dog" background. Be aware of this before getting a shepherd.

All shepherds need a set of rules boundaries and limitations. They do well with structure. Be prepared to be active with your dog. This is an active breed not a couch potato breed. They're not for everyone. Please do the research to make sure the breed and personality is right for you.

If you already have a German Shepherd don't be surprised if you experience breed discrimination. A lot of people do not understand the personality and it scares them the appearance of some German shepherds as well as the outgoing actions of some. Just be a responsible educating Shepherd owner and stay calm and in charge with your dog. You can be an example with your dog for the breed. Don't take offense just educate.

Good Buddy 411: There are a few factors that'll help you have a pleasant time walking with your dog. One of them is how you place the collar on the dog. I recommend placement A. It will help you have more control having the collar set higher on the neck and you can direct your dog more effectively.

If you’ve ever seen a sledding dog, you’ll notice that the harness is around the lower part of the dog’s neck, near the shoulders. Why? This is where the dog’s pulling power is located. You’re actually helping your dog to pull you around if you have the collar placed there. Instead, position it on the upper neck, which is the most sensitive area.

Just had to share....do not fall for a cute face though. Ha ha stay strong and keep a good structure for your dog. Setting rules and boundaries doesn't mean they do not get treats or affection. Everything has its proper timing.
