This is very interesting! There are 3 parts I will share- worth the listen.
While there are cases where medication is helpful/necessary, the amount of dogs being put on meds unnecessarily and for prolonged lengths of time is getting out of hand.

Earlier in this lesson we passed another dog and River lunged and growled at him. We worked a bit around one of my dogs in the store and on the way out we spotted this dog and worked River around this new dog. When he tried to pull her toward this dog she did not allow it. Great job!

I’ve always said that the loudest voices who oppose tools and training which enable dogs to live the biggest, happiest, and healthiest lives, aren’t advocating for the dogs, they’re advocating for their own emotions… at the cost of the dogs.

Josie enjoyed her first Home Depot visit! Mixture of exploring and training. In brand new environments it is expected that a dog may have difficulty with behaviors they know well at home. The more languages (verbal, leash pressure, ecollar)you have established with your dog the easier it can be to guide them through confusion/distraction).

A brief progression breakdown of Ranger’s first lesson learning that attacking the vacuum is NOT acceptable. A mixture of being free- or out of command, and in command. On the bed he was in command- when sitting he was free and made that choice on his own. Rewards and punishment were used in this session. Punishment for attacking the vacuum, rewards when quiet and not pacing.

I find it interesting that the dog trainers who are the loudest about their chosen methods being the ONLY way to train are
The trainers that don’t show much,if any videos of themselves working with dogs

Here Joey’s owner learns how to teach her to lay down using a luring method. A treat is held between her fingers and presented to the dog. Keeping it in contact with the dogs nose allowing them to lick it but not take it simply lure the dog into desired position. Once in correct position use your marker word to let the dog know that they are correct and give the treat. Sometimes the behavior needs to be broken down into smaller steps such as moving a front leg out a bit while butt remains on ground and then increasing the criteria to 2 paws moved out, then elbows on the ground etc. once the dog is doing the behavior reliably then we must move on to fading the lure- where basically we switch from bribing the dog into position, to rewarding them for doing what we ask without prompting with a treat. This is one of several ways to teach the down. I will make another video later on how to fade the lure in training. 🐶🐶

A few weeks ago myself and my mentor, Mitch received the text seen below from the CNYSPCA where we have been volunteering with the dogs. I have been volunteering there around 6 months, Mitch for 15 years!
Both of us often offered discounted or free training for adopted dogs to help them adjust. After the shelter announced their “no prong” collar policy I respected the rules and no longer used them and did no training with the dogs. Simply took them out to play, walk and off site excursions to parks, swimming etc.
Due to our differences in training styles - we are not force free/pure positive- we were told not to come back even to give the dogs some free time.
*there are dogs that sit in their kennels 5+days in a row without getting outside due to their not being enough volunteers to help- but that doesn’t matter apparently.
Funny thing in the person in charge used to rave about how well Mitch helped her to train her personal dog and last year recommended me to help train her daughters dog- but apparently because we train differently then the on staff “trainer”we aren’t even allowed to help improve their quality of life by giving them time outside their kennels. I don’t care what kind of training you do or how good you may be- it’s not going to help dogs that are stuck in kennels for days on end. But some people care more about their egos and image than the dogs they claim to care about.
That being said there are still some dedicated hardworking caring employees and volunteers but unfortunately the people who make the rules do not share these characteristics
