With great thanks to the at Cooperative Gardens Commission we have received a seed hub package in the mail to distribute locally! These will be available at all of the Alchemical Nursery and Bitternut Homestead on Otisco Street community events, including our Earth Day activities, our regular volunteer work sessions at the gardens, and even our open workshops at the Depot. Plus anywhere else we happen to be present for an event or activity. The bulk seed packs are meant to be divided into smaller packs as you need for your own garden (we have coin size envelopes for that purpose for you to use). In total, the amount contained in all of these bulk packets on average, can provide 300 family-sized seed bundles.

A warming turnout by the Public Health Interest Group allowed us to tackle a bit of an experimental task to try and keep the field bindw**d at bay from invading more of the forest garden site. We dug a line in the "sand", a trench as deep as we could go before hitting the backfill rubble on the site which was about 6-9 inches. Research shows that the vast majority of bindw**d lateral roots are within the top 1 foot, so if they want to try and go under that 6-9 inch trench they will have to do so through the hard scrabble rubble, gravel, and bricks and stones; we'll see. In any case, we double mulched the far side of the trench with overlapping two layers of cardboard and a couple inches of compost; planted about 50 divisions through the cardboard every 12 inches or so, and we'll check back on the bindw**d situation all season long!

We opened up space for the golden raspberries, elderberry hedgeline, and some baby hazel; and we pulled loads of bindw**d from our raised beds, jostaberry, rhubarb, and blackberry. Such a great turnout! Thanks to Yasmeen Awayda for initiating the workday on behalf of the Public Health Interest Group club. If you're group is looking for a volunteer opportunity supporting public health, local food systems, and ecological landscaping, give us a shout. Thanks to all the volunteers including Timothy Farfaglia, Ursula Rozum, Alison Mullan-Stout, Naima Barbour, and all the other volunteers we don't have the ability to tag.
