The mercury is dropping! Thanks to the Syracuse Police Deoartment for this important reminder:

If you are cold, they are cold! With freezing cold temperatures rapidly approaching, PLEASE be mindful of how long pets are being left outside. Like humans, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia.

A reminder to Syracuse residents:
Adrian's law punishes pet owners if they leave an animal tethered outside in extreme temperatures (above 90 degrees or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit) for a period greater than 2 continuous hours.

If you suspect animal neglect or abuse, please call 911 immediately. You can also call the Syracuse Police dog control number at (315) 442-5346 or our Animal Cruelty line at (315) 442-5336.

Holiday shopping for your dog? Please don’t buy rawhide bones and chews, as they can be dangerous for dogs, and can cause choking and intestinal blockages. Dogs that swallow large pieces of rawhide without chewing can end up with it stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract, potentially leading to life-threatening health problems. Rawhide does not dissolve in the dog’s stomach. Instead, it can swell up, creating a risk of bowel blockage. Alternative chewing options for dogs include bully sticks, dental chews, and reputable synthetic chews. Safe rubber toys that can be filled with treats or peanut butter offer mental stimulation and a safe outlet for chewing.

In a few short weeks, NYS will join other states as we say NO MORE to puppy mills.

It's a well-documented fact that pet stores like Petland have been selling sick puppies from puppy mills for decades. Not only have the puppies been sick, but the parents of these puppies are left in filthy, unsanitary conditions and forced to breed for their entire lives. We shut down the suppliers when we cut off the demand for puppies from these horrendous mills.

Putting an end to this horrific abuse was a team effort. Your voices made an impact when we called you to action. You called and emailed elected officials, asking them to end the puppy mill pipeline to NY. YOUR voice was why we'll witness these "businesses" close their doors for good.

Remember, countless pets in local shelters wait patiently for their forever homes. Choose adoption first. 💞

2) Facilitate political action with a goal of strengthening laws that will protect dogs.

3) Provide other animal welfare services and resources when available.

4) Partner with the Syracuse-based agencies that care for the city’s homeless dogs by offering volunteer and other professional support in an effort to increase pit bull adoptions.
