👏Kudos to Rocco for his heroic work! 👏

Rocco likely saved lives acting on his instincts. Our hearts are with the families who lost so much. We feel eternally grateful for Rocco's actions.

Stay tuned for a special celebration event this week for Rocco! 🏅🏆💕

Rocco is a very good boy.

The black and white Pitbull mix alerted his owner -- and others -- to the fire that tore through two buildings in the New Legacy Apartments complex on Friday night.

“A couple of tenants are calling him the ‘hero dog,’” Angela Murray said. “They said they never hear him bark but he was barking out of control, that something was wrong,”

Please contact Fixing to Help if you need financial assistance getting your pets spayed/neutered!

In case we've never met before, may we introduce ourselves?

Fixing to Help is a small group of volunteers, a 501(c)3, who promote pet wellness and safety. We're diehards when it comes to animal welfare.

We've advocated for the Syracuse Police Department to maintain full-time animal cruelty investigative services . . . for the passage of the "puppy mill" bill (now in effect in NYS!) . . . and for a modest portion of the county's covid relief dollars to help provide more pet wellness services for neighbors with low incomes. No luck so far in that department, though. You can check Syracuse.com for some of our public statements.

Most of all, however, spay/neuter is our passion.

We'll never rescue or adopt our way out of the suffering caused by pet overpopulation. We have to "fix" it. That's what we're trying to do, one pet at a time.

To date, we've assisted with most or all of the cost of more than 2,800 spays and neuters of pets whose owners live in Onondaga County and have a verifiable low income. An overwhelming number of our remarkable pet owners found or rescued their pets or took them out of an abusive or neglectful situation.

We humbly ask that you share this post. So often a dog or cat will come to our program because a friend of a cousin of a neighbor's coworker saw a post on Facebook and passed it on. If someone who needs Fixing to Help's sponsorship calls us because of your sharing, that's a win for everyone - pet, family, neighbors, and taxpayer, too.

We pay our surgery bills thanks to donations from wonderfully visionary supporters and to grants. We're currently reaching the end of a $25,000 ASPCA grant to help us pay a portion the surgery bills, which now run about $60,000 a year at the local gem of a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, Spay and Neuter Syracuse.

It's a good bet that there are very loved pets in your neighborhood who are Fixing to Help graduates. They've come from every corner of Onondaga County.

So again, please share our little post. You could be making a huge difference in a pet family's life. Thank you so much!

On Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, a big shoutout to our local law enforcement and animal control officers partners who go above and beyond to protect and serve—not just people, but animals in need too. 🐾💙

Law enforcement officers play a critical role in helping animals in need. Whether it's a pet parent in a domestic violence situation and wants desperately to keep their pet safe or helping a dog owner find access to free pet food and basic care, their collaboration with us ensures the animals get the help they deserve.

Their compassion and dedication make a huge difference in our community, ensuring that every life is treated with kindness and respect. Thank you for always showing up for those who can’t speak for themselves, for your unwavering care, and for making our world a better place for all creatures. 🙏

Check out some of our friends from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office and Syracuse Police Department in action! 👇

It’s cold out there, and it’s going to be below freezing all week! Thanks to Fixing to Help for this crucial information to help protect dogs left outside in extreme temperatures:

“PLEASE TAKE ACTION if you see a pet suffering from exposure. If you share this post, please cut and paste the following information into your post. Many dog owners are unaware of these laws meant to protect pets. Thank you!.

For ALL COUNTIES and ALL NEW YORK STATE RESIDENTS, NYS Ag and Markets Law 353b deals with dogs left outdoors in inclement weather without appropriate shelter. This state law applies to all municipalities, including Syracuse but does not have a tethering requirement. An uninsulated dog house, open to the elements is NOT an adequate structure. Inside your home with you is!

State law requires:
1. any person who owns or has custody or control of a dog that is left outdoors provide them with appropriate shelter.
2. The shelter must be a structurally sound housing facility that:
* is insulated
* has a waterproof roof
* is large enough to allow the dog to stand up, lie down, and turn around.
3. There must be a shaded area away from direct sunlight that is accessible at all times.

👉 Violations can trigger a series of escalating fines, which the court can reduce by an amount the owner or custodian proves he or she has spent to correct the deficiencies in the dog’s shelter.

In Syracuse, Adrian's law punishes city pet owners if they leave an animal:
1. tethered outside
2. in extreme temps above 90F below 32F
3. for a period greater than 2 continuous hours.

👉 Violators could be subject to arrest, incarceration and fines up to $500. They also could be placed on the Onondaga County Animal Abuser Registry.

📲 Syracuse Animal Cruelty officers urge people to notify Syracuse Police Department about any dog left outside in inclement weather, whether cold, rain, heat, or weather emergency without proper shelter. You can call Syracuse Police Department's Dog Control number at (315) 442-5346 or their Animal Cruelty line at (315) 442-5336. You can email them as well! [email protected]

📲 Those outside the city should call 911 and the SPCA at 315-454-4479 or your local law enforcement agency.

💕 Dogs are social and need to be with their people. 💕 Regardless of where you live, please do not leave your pets outside longer than absolutely necessary to take care of business in frigid weather.

‼️ And if you see an animal suffering in the cold, PLEASE REPORT IT to your local authorities!

Lifesaving work is at the core of what we do! 💕

We know how much our Keep Us Together parents love their pets, but sometimes the cost of care can feel overwhelming. Nuna came to our program after local law enforcement connected her mom with us. We fell in love with this adorable girl - how can you not with a face like this?!

If you'd like to donate to our program to help keep pets out of shelters and with their families, just like Nuna, you can donate through our website: cusepitcrew.org

If your dog is struggling with skin issues and finances are tight, you're not alone—and there are options to help! 💪❤️

Here are some tips to get your furry friend the care they need without breaking the bank:

➡️ DIY remedies: Simple, vet-approved home treatments like oatmeal baths can provide soothing relief while you explore long-term solutions.

➡️ Community support: Don't hesitate to ask friends or local pet groups for advice on affordable care options—they may know of resources you haven't found yet!

We know everyone is trying the best they can, and every step you take for your dog's health is worth it. Your pup’s well-being matters, and together, we’ll find a way to make it work. 💖🐾

The mercury is dropping! Thanks to the Syracuse Police Deoartment for this important reminder:

If you are cold, they are cold! With freezing cold temperatures rapidly approaching, PLEASE be mindful of how long pets are being left outside. Like humans, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia.

A reminder to Syracuse residents:
Adrian's law punishes pet owners if they leave an animal tethered outside in extreme temperatures (above 90 degrees or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit) for a period greater than 2 continuous hours.

If you suspect animal neglect or abuse, please call 911 immediately. You can also call the Syracuse Police dog control number at (315) 442-5346 or our Animal Cruelty line at (315) 442-5336.

Our Story

Our Strategy: 1) Offer free humane education at community centers, schools, and public service agencies.

2) Facilitate political action with a goal of strengthening laws that will protect dogs.

3) Provide other animal welfare services and resources when available.

4) Partner with the Syracuse-based agencies that care for the city’s homeless dogs by offering volunteer and other professional support in an effort to increase pit bull adoptions.
