With the holidays fast approaching, we want to remind everyone why pets should never be purchased as presents. Bringing an animal into your home between November and January is not the issue, the real risk comes from being unprepared, uninformed, or gifting a living being to someone who may not be ready for the responsibility.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
* Pets are 10+ year commitments. Many people are not ready for the long-term financial, emotional, and lifestyle responsibilities.
* The holidays are overwhelming for animals. Whether new or not, pets need routine, quiet space, and advocacy from their people — not chaos.
* Impulse pet purchases fuel puppy mills. Ethical breeders do not market pets as holiday gifts. Be cautious of any breeder or rescue pushing the “perfect present.”
* Surrenders spike during and after the holidays. Shelters are already stretched thin financially, physically, and emotionally. Don’t contribute to the strain by making a choice you aren’t ready for.
We’ve included a list of questions to ask yourself before adding a new family member — during the holidays or any time of year📝 Responsible decisions save lives.
If adoption isn’t possible right now, there are so many ways to help your local shelter community.
