November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month! Older animals tend to get overlooked in shelters, but there are lots of great reasons to open your home and heart to a senior, including:

Puppies and kittens are cute, but they also need to be trained, socialized, and can be a bit unpredictable when being handled (especially by children). That’s a time and energy investment some families may not be comfortable with. Ask an adoption counselor about older pets with a positive history of living with youngsters and being housebroken.

Instead of having to go through that annoying chewing and destruction phase, most older pets just want to hang out with their people and their toys or find a cozy spot in the sun to curl up for a nap.

If you like specific breeds, they are typically easier to find at shelters and rescues as seniors. There are also breed-specific rescues that often have fantastic older pets.

There are some wonderful senior dogs up for adoption at shelters right here in Syracuse! Check out Simba & Nala at B & R Bunkhouse, Rufus at HumaneCNY, and Precious, Larry & Harry, Jack & Diane, Mocha, Butterball, Mario, Stitch, Frank, Stallone and Emmett at the CNY SPCA!

Did you know that National Pit Bull Awareness Day is celebrated on October 28th?? The day's purpose is to educate the public about pit bulls, change negative perceptions, and promote positive experiences with the breed. Did you know that bully breeds sit in shelters 3x longer than other breeds of dogs? It’s a great day to volunteer at a shelter, sign up to foster, or adopt a homeless pittie! To celebrate, here are some local adoptable pitties in their Halloween photos: Dolly, Dawson, Dulce and William from Second Chance; Dale, Sylvia, Otis and Charles from B & R Bunkhouse; Diamond from HumaneCNY, and Rory from Recycle-A-Bull!
If you have a cute Halloween photo of your pittie, post it in the comments!

‼️ PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT ‼️

We're so excited to partner with our friends at Pet Supplies Plus - Cicero, NY—to help feed and support pet families in CNY!

We believe in bridging the gap in resources for pet owners who may be facing challenges. Let's face it—life can be expensive, especially now. We believe the best place for a pet is with its family, not in a shelter, so that's why we formed Keep Us Together. It's because of partnerships like this one that we can help keep pets and their families together.

Thank you, Pet Supplies Plus! 😁👏👏👏

Thanks to Urgent Veterinary Care for these tips to keep your pets safe on Halloween!

A reminder on pet safety for the spooky season! Make sure to keep candy and decorations away from your pets. Chocolate can be toxic to pets, and many sugar-free candies contain xylitol, which is poisonous to dogs. Decorations like fake cobwebs, rubber eyeballs, or tinsel can be dangerous for pets. Fake cobwebs can entangle pets, while rubber eyeballs and tinsel can be a choking or foreign body hazard.
