Another fantastic update from our last show weekend at OKC in Enumclaw, WA- our mentor and Shih Tzu magician Mark Iseki showed our sweet red head Tess and got a 3 point major WB for a combined 6 points and 2 majors. 9 singles to go 🙌🙌

Our Emma x JP litter is 3.5 weeks old already! Walking, talking and playing- they’re almost ready to start on mush 🤩 They’re very chonky, and have all figured out how to climb out of their 6” tall round bed 😂

Goodness we’re behind on updates 😅 but here’s a fun one!

We had a Shih Tzu Specialty show in Graham in July, and our home-bred girl Lena took Best of Opposite S*x over 2 bitch specials, Best of Winners, Best Bred By and Best Puppy and got her first major! She was handled by our favorite junior handler, Makylah 🤩 She now has 7 points and 1 major all put on by Kylah.

Well it’s official official, official 😂 Complete with the collected ribbons- who does that?! 😅 Sweet boy is loving pet life. Figuring out potty training quickly, loving limitless outside playtime, and water bowls are pretty cool too 😆 If you’re looking for the bragging rights without putting in the work, this is your guy 🤩 He’s actively looking for a couch to surf, pending his neuter date.

In all the busyness of the shows and specialty and litter prep, I forgot to post our Queenie update 😱

Our s***ky little girl went to stay with her 1/2 sister Darkness who is also a teenie tiny at 4.5 lbs and live an absolutely spoiled rotten life with the best floof dad Everrr 🥰

Her new name is Xena, Princess Warrior, and no lies- I can see the resemblance 🤭 Her first night home she didn’t settle in bed well so he slept on the couch with her, and she kept his neck warm like the perfect little scarf pup she is 😂

We wish you well tiny Xena Warrior ❤️

Well the point tally is in, our sweet CH Alki Stars First Things First Bereish*th “Bear” is finally in the books as our first homebred champion 🥰 He will make one last show appearance in Enumclaw this coming Sunday before a much deserved haircut and will begin his search for his perfect couch.

He’s a total love, gives all the kisses and would rather cuddle than anything else. He turned a year March 23rd, is microchipped, well behaved for bathing though grooming may be a different story 😅 If you know anyone looking for a handsome Champion couch potato without the work and the stress of a title, this sweet guy will be available mid/end of August after his neuter appointment. We’ve been sitting on a big surprise, praying for good results and Saturday it became official 🤩

Our resident Xeralane boy, GCH XERALANE’S Juxtaposition and GCH Emma had their litter of 5 healthy pups, 4 males and 1 female. They are all gaining and nursing well and momma is great, per usual 🥰

The last babe of the is just over 4 lbs now just 2 weeks shy of 6 months, and nearing her forever size 😂 Teenie Tiny Queenie is leash trained (though she would much rather be carried 😅), litter box trained, water bottle trained, bathes/grooms/dremels well, and is such a love 🤩

She is tiny and would do best in a home with retired staff 🤣 or a family with no/older kids that will be mindful of her small size. She has puppy sized bursts of energy, but tiny legs so walks around the block would mostly be spent carrying her majesty around, so indoor or backyard play are sufficient for physical exercise. She is very smart and will have her subjects trained appropriately in no time 😅

She has had all age appropriate deworming and vaccinations except for Rabies due to her small size, though she is technically big and old enough for it if and/or when her new family is ready to make that choice. She is microchipped and registered thru AKC.

We are soooo excited to announce little Trevor, now ‘George’ is in his new home tonight with a big sister and he has 2 adorable kiddos- future Partners in Crime he gets to grow up with 😍 Congratulations Lois Choi and your family. We couldn’t be happier with this placement. Placing a puppy in a home with kiddos to love is absolutely one of my favorite situations for my babies, and having a family fall in love with one is the absolute best 🥰

Sweet Trevor is such a lovable guy ❤️ He would happily snuggle the kids for hours 🤩 He’s pretty sure baths and grooming are terrible, but sat like a perfect gentleman for nail trim and trimming paw pads 😂

He has been wormed and vaccinated except rabies, and had a 3 month flea treatment. He is litter box trained but has used potty and washable pads before. We may start him outside this weekend with the bigger puppies and see how he takes to it.

He really would thrive in a family or multi home dogs, or retired people that be home with him a lot.

I swear this tiny little thing gets more adorable as time goes on 🤩 I told hubs last night, if I didn’t have crazy kids running around, she would definitely would be mine 😂😂

Little Queenie is 3 lbs 5 ounces, just over 4 months old, meaning her estimated adult weight is right at 6 pounds 🥹🥹🥹 Her color has deepened so much- she is the most beautiful red now with some ticking (polka dots) on her legs and a few on her back, and for those tooth faries out there- she has an almost perfect scissor bite with all tooth buds present which is kind of shocking for this breed and the small size of her mouth 😂

We didn’t intentionally create a teeny tiny, but I can totally see the draw of this adorable purse-puppy sized diva 🤩

She’s had her first haircut, wormed and vaccinated (no rabies yet as she’s still too small to be comfortable with that shot yet), and comes with all her beds that she’s accumulated and everything needed to get started with her.

She needs a home with no smaller kiddos and preferably no big dogs- she’s so tiny it won’t take much to do serious damage to her tiny frame and we want to set her and her future family up for success ❤️

Well we did a bit of traveling this last weekend for 2 points which ended up looking a little different than we had hoped 😅

Our Alki Stars Sparkling in the Stars “Lena” took Best of Opposite S*x for 2 points her first day out, and reserve winners her second day 🤩, all handled by our very own Junior Handler Makylah (her own puppy 🥰).

Our Bear is still looking for his last 2 points before he finds a nice comfy couch to call his own with someone that wants a beautiful Champion without all the work and stress 😜 He told me this weekend that princes shouldn’t have to do all this work so I guess I better get with the program 😅

Queenie and Trevor have been sitting in the puppy area just waiting for their turn so I’ll get updated weights and pictures of them soon. 18 weeks old tomorrow. Vaccinated and ready for their new 🏰

Happy 1/2 birthday to our lovely Jack x Emma litter 😍

This litter was long awaited, and everything we were hoping it would be! Our white and red keeper pup Lena will start in the show ring soon, as well as the solid black female Elvira.

We also got sweet photo updates from the gold girl, Tashi, and the large black male pup, Bear. They are both thriving in their new homes and we couldn’t be more happy having their people as part of our Alki Stars family 🥰

Cat x Koi Squad update: babies are 13 weeks already 😳 They love sneaking out of their pen, terrorizing the adults, wrestling with each other, and lots of naps in between. Fully litter box and water bottle trained, content in their pen, or roaming, and are both sleeping thru the night. Love toys, treats and loves. Both tolerate grooming, but Queenie looooves the dryer 😂

Trevor is a sweet solid boy, loves to cuddle, play and talk. So handsome, gentle and has been practicing ‘no-bite’ already. Tracking to be around 10 pounds, he’s an active athletic guy but I think would be just as happy as a couch potato 😂 He would really love kiddos or other doggy friends to hang out with, but would probably do ok without as well. Confident little guy.

Queenie is FINALLY 2 pounds, has started her vaccines, and will be ready for her new family as soon as she finishes her second round! She is still tracking to be less than 6 pounds as an adult, but has more s***k than adults 7x her size 😆 She really would thrive being a sweet grandma’s purse puppy or retired couples love bug. As much as we REALLY love seeing shih tzu grow up with kiddos, I think it would be irresponsible placing her with younger kids because she’s SO tiny 😔 Older or no kids, and preferably no big dogs.

More exciting news from our corner of the world- we’ve had a sweet guest here for about a month and he’s settled in quite nicely. I can’t wait to see what this handsome thing adds to our program 🤩 Introducing GCH Xeralane’s Juxtaposition ‘JP’ on loan from Xeralane kennel in Hawaii. A HUGE thank you again to Mr Earl Takahashi and Mrs Bonnie Prato Liz Takamoto for trusting us to love your boy while he’s here ❤️ The youngest has claimed him as her own, and he doesn’t seem to mind (much) 😂😂

What a full month April was! 2 show weekends with a week in Denver in between, and we’re about to do it again this weekend! Here are a few highlights 🤩 Bear took Winners Dog and Best of opposite and then Winners Dog best of Breed in Cashmere, with another 4 point major, bringing his point total to 13 (15 points and 2 majors required for his champion title).

This last weekend in Yakima he took Reserve Winners Dog Sunday, so we’re still searching for our last 2 points! He goes out again on Sunday in Elma at our Shih Tzu club’s specialty so cross all your fingers and toes for us!

Tess has been a trooper going to all these shows and not getting much spotlight, but hopefully soon it will be her turn 🥰

What rich history this breed has, and thank goodness for kind people who had hearts to save and revive the breed for our homes and love for the fancy 🥰

Ying Ying the Great
From deep in our archives comes this shot of a Shih Tzu family from the Chumulari Kennels of Rev. D. Allan and Margaret Easton. Ying-Ying, the famous gold-and-white sire of champions, lies front and center.

Shih Tzu history was made in Metuchen, New Jersey, on September 1, 1969, when 3-year-old Chumulari Ying Ying went Best in Show at New Brunswick KC over 970 dogs entered. What made this achievement all the more remarkable was that it was the breed’s first day of AKC Toy Group competition. Alva Rosenberg judged the breed, and Jim Trullinger judged both the group and BIS.

The Reverend D. Allan Easton, who owned Ying Ying with his wife Margaret “Peggy” Easton, wrote in his Popular Dogs column, “We are proud that Chumulari Ying Ying should have been honored by two judges whom we have long been respected for their ability to pick good dogs without fear or favor.”

The Eastons were at the vanguard of breeder-owners who put the Shih Tzu on the map in those early years of AKC recognition.

The reverend, a Scotsman by birth, spent years in Peking preaching the Gospel to English-speaking congregations. He was a serious scholar of Asian culture, credentialed in Great Britain and America, and was first captivated by the Shih Tzu during a 1937 sojourn in Peking. One of the tiny handful Westerners of his time to visit Tibet, Easton made the journey by mule and pony across a 15,000-foot mountain pass.

His beloved Peggy was a nurse by profession and Shih Tzu enthusiast by inclination. After living a few years in a rural Scottish parish, where they raised Siamese cats, Pekingese, and Tibetan Terriers, the Eastons settled in New Jersey. The Reverend served as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wood-Ridge.

By the early 1960s, the Eastons had established their Chumulari kennel and busied themselves breeding and importing quality Shih Tzu. By the time the breed achieved AKC status in 1969, they were ready to present their great one, Ying Ying.

“There cannot be a Shih Tzu breeder today who has not heard of Am./Can. Ch. Chumulari Ying Ying,” Anne Seranne wrote in 1982. “Ying Ying’s contribution to the breed has been tremendous, and his qualities will continue to live on in future generations. He is sire of 29 American champions, including six BIS sons, each out of a different dam.”

While we’re out celebrating Passover, teeny Queenie has won over another heart while demanding some extra pampering and one on one loves 😂😍😍🥰 This adorable little tiny really is something else. Lots of love and sass packed into this tiny vessel, but she cannot be ignored 😂

Little Trevor and Queenie are 11 weeks old as of yesterday, very active and smart. Queenie is a few short ounces from 2 lbs and ready to leave here. These 2 babes come prespoiled and ready to change your world 🥹

Trevor loves cuddles from my kiddos, content relaxing in his bed or playing with the dogs. He’s a pretty go-with-the-flow little puppy, and should easily adapt well to any family scenario.

Queenie is fully embracing her name and has become Queen of the home 😂 Because she is so tiny, she should go to a home with no children and preferably only small dogs as she will likely be a 5-6 lb snack full grown. She is quickly accumulating adorable outfits here and her wardrobe can transfer with her 🙈

We showed this last weekend in Cashmere, WA and Bear took Best of Opposite s*x Saturday, and Best of Breed/Best of Winners for another 4 point major Sunday, bringing his point total to 13! 2 more singles and this sweet little guy is ready to live his best life 🤩 Thanks to Mark Iseki and Heather Kalda for helping get him ready and Heather taking him in for breed to get the much needed cross 🙌 (failed to take a ringside pic before breaking him down to leave, so here’s his group-side pic from Albany 🤩)

We love this article! We feed Purina ProPlan Puppy shredded chicken blend here, give our puppies durable nylabone and kong brand puppy chew toys while teething, and raise them in puppy pens to give them safe spaces so they don’t get lost, stepped on or exposed to dangerous germs before they are fully vaccinated. While we don’t generally ‘crate’ train our sweet babes, there are some circumstances in which we do use them especially after they have a solid understanding of potty training, but being content in a pen with their litter pan, bed, food and water and toys helps build a more confident and less stressed puppy. While our vaccine schedule is slightly different, building a strong immune system is so important especially for these small breed pups. Great article!
