Healthy raccoons can be active in the daytime during any time of the year. But as night temperatures fall, you’re more likely to see a raccoon coming out during daylight hours. Raccoons enter a hibernation-like state during winter known as torpor. During this time, they sleep much more often, but will come out on warm days to look for food, while spending nights cuddled up in warm dens with their families. An otherwise healthy-looking raccoon is extremely unlikely to have rabies, even if you see it coming out during the day.

We’ll admit it: this stuffed animal makes us cry sometimes. 😢

Poor little Kendra saw her mommy get killed by a dog. For the last couple of hours, we had to examine her and fight hard to stabilize her. No traumatized, weak orphan enjoys being poked and prodded and weighed. We had to remove lots of cockleburs that we’re deeply embedded in her fur and give her uncomfortable fluid injections. Once she was feeling well enough to fight us, she was understandably mad as hell and hid under her blankets, growling and crying in fear and pain.

Then we put this mommy into her cage. Stuffed animals don’t always work— some babies are fully aware that it does not smell, move, or behave like a real fox— but it worked well last year to bring comfort to our patient Erich, who completely bonded to it until he was able to get to know other foxes.

Fortunately, Kendra was like Erich and showed signs of relief as soon as she saw the stuffie. She wagged her tail and came running, licked the toy’s face several times, and then fell asleep comfortably.

We’ll be letting this sweetheart rest until it’s time for her next feeding. Get some sleep, sweetie. You deserve your rest and comfort. We can never replace your mommy, but we’ll try our hardest to be the next best thing.
