Matted coats are more than “just tangled fur,” especially on senior dogs.

Underneath that neglected coat can be tight pulling on the skin, trapped moisture, sores, bruising, restricted movement, and pain with every step.

Older dogs already carry stiffness, arthritis, weaker skin, and exhaustion more heavily, so grooming them takes patience, compassion, and careful handling.
Sometimes senior dogs come in scared, uncomfortable, and carrying months or years of neglect in their coat.

The goal is never perfection — it’s relief.

Giving them comfort again. Helping them feel lighter, cleaner, cooler, and able to move without painful mats tugging at their body.

Senior grooming appointments often require slowing down, reading body language, working around limitations, and putting expert animal handling and groundedness to the test.

Not every dog walks into a grooming salon confident and carefree.

Some come in shy, unsure, overstimulated, or carrying past experiences that made them feel the need to protect themselves.

I recently worked with a husky who had previously nipped at another groomer, and his first experience with me went beautifully.

Working with behavior is more than just grooming the coat — it’s reading body language, respecting boundaries, understanding energy, and adjusting techniques based on the signals the dog gives.

I pay close attention to cues, problem solve in the moment, and work with the dog instead of against them so they can successfully and safely get through the groom.

The best part?

After we finished, this husky actually wanted to come back through the gate for another pet.

Even his owner smiled and said, “He likes you.” Those moments mean everything to me because trust is earned, not forced.

Grooming an Alaskan Malamute is all about managing their thick double coat, not just styling it.

They shed heavily, especially during “blow coat” seasons, so regular brushing is essential to remove loose undercoat and prevent mats.

An undercoat rake works best for reaching the dense fluff underneath, while a slicker brush helps keep the topcoat smooth. During heavy shedding, daily brushing makes a big difference.

Bathing should be occasional but thorough, since their coat holds water and takes time to dry completely.

A high-velocity dryer is often used to prevent damp undercoat from causing skin issues.

Overall, consistency matters more than anything—keeping up with grooming keeps them comfortable and helps control the massive amount of shedding they’re known for.

Timid dogs don’t come to you with confidence—they come in pieces. A lowered head. A tucked tail.
Eyes that flicker between curiosity and fear.

And when it’s time to clip their nails, you see it all magnified. The hesitation. The quiet panic. The question in their body: “Am I safe?”

For a timid dog, nail trims aren’t just grooming—they’re vulnerability. Every touch matters. Every movement speaks. If you rush, they retreat deeper into themselves.

But if you slow down… breathe with them… let them feel your patience instead of your pressure, something shifts.

You don’t just clip nails.
You build trust.
One paw at a time.
One soft word at a time.

One moment of stillness where they realize nothing bad is coming.

And maybe the first time, you only get one nail done. Maybe the second time, two. But eventually, that same dog who once trembled will rest a little easier in your hands.

Because you listened.
Because you respected their fear instead of forcing through it.

Timid dogs don’t need perfection.

They need someone willing to meet them where they are—and stay there long enough for them to believe they’re safe.

Our boy. 🥰

Carlos wasn’t just any puppy we picked out—he was part of a story we were already living. We raised his mother together first.

While the rest of the puppies bounced through that wild, playful energy, he was different. At just five weeks old, he sat there—calm, focused, watching everything.

He held himself with a kind of awareness that didn’t match his age.

Ten years later, he’s still that same soul.

Steady. Intentional. Deeply connected. The kind of dog that doesn’t just live alongside you, but with you, the true example of, Man's Best Friend. 💙

A first bath on an adolescent dog isn’t just about getting them clean—it’s about introducing them to surrender.

They’re not a tiny, moldable puppy anymore. They have opinions now. Strength. Awareness. And when the water turns on, you can almost feel that moment where they decide… “I don’t trust this.”

The sound of the sprayer, the sensation of water soaking through to the skin, the loss of control—it can be overwhelming. You’ll see the shifting weight, the attempts to step out, the brace against the tub. Sometimes it’s stillness… sometimes it’s a full-body protest.

But again—it’s not bad behavior. It’s vulnerability.
This is where your energy matters just as much as your technique. Slow, intentional movements. A steady presence. No rushing, no forcing past their threshold. You introduce each step like it’s a conversation, not a task.

Water starts low and gentle. Hands stay grounded and reassuring. You let them process instead of overwhelm them.

And in between it all, there are those small shifts:

- The moment they stop resisting the water
– The breath they didn’t realize they were holding
– The split second they choose to stand instead of fight

That’s the real success of a first bath.

Because what you’re building isn’t just tolerance—it’s trust in a moment where they feel completely exposed.

And that trust will follow them into every groom after.

There’s always that moment of hesitation when a first-time client says, “I’m not sure you’ll be able to handle him…”—especially when “him” is a big, hairy German Shepherd with a history of going after other dogs.

You can feel the concern, the uncertainty. But this is exactly where experience matters.

At Lesha’s Dog Grooming, dogs like this aren’t labeled as “problem dogs”—they’re understood.

This Shepherd came in alert, tense, unsure of the environment and clearly used to being on guard.

But with over 25 years of hands-on experience working with every temperament imaginable, I know how to read that energy, how to respond without escalating it, and how to create a space where a dog can finally exhale.

And that’s exactly what happened.

Instead of resistance, he softened. Instead of reacting, he listened.

What started as a potentially stressful situation turned into a calm, cooperative grooming session. By the end, this powerful, reactive dog was standing like a well-mannered adolescent—trusting, composed, and allowing the process.

Even his owner was surprised.

It’s not about force. It’s not about control. It’s about connection, timing, and understanding the dog in front of you.

Every dog has the capacity to shift when they feel safe—and moments like this are why I do what I do.

Emergency groom!

That nose hits the ground… and suddenly instinct takes over.

One minute your hound dog is happily trotting along, the next—boom—they’ve found it. Something ancient, something awful, something that definitely used to be alive. And before you can even say “NOOOO,” they’re rolling. Full body. Shoulder to shoulder. Absolute commitment to the stench.

Proud? Yes.
Smelling like a crime scene? Also yes.

That’s when the emergency call comes in.

At Lesha’s Dog Grooming, we already know the look—the slightly panicked owner holding their breath, the hound walking in like they just discovered gold.

No judgment here… just deep cleansing, de-skunking-level baths, and a whole lot of patience.

Because hounds are gonna hound.
But nobody has to live with the aftermath.

By the time they leave, that “Eau de Dead Thing” is gone, replaced with soft fur, fresh scent, and a dog that’s somehow still proud of their life choices.

Foster dogs carry stories you can’t always see at first glance.

Some come in matted, shut down, unsure of what’s happening. Some flinch at touch, some freeze, and some just quietly tolerate the process because they’ve learned they have to.

Grooming a foster dog isn’t just about cleaning them up—it’s about meeting them exactly where they are.
It’s slow hands. Calm energy.

Patience over perfection.

Sometimes the biggest win isn’t a perfect haircut—it’s the moment they take a deeper breath, soften their body, or realize they’re safe enough to stand still without fear.

These dogs are in transition between what was and what’s next.

A gentle, respectful groom can be part of that bridge—helping them feel lighter, more comfortable, and a little more ready for the life waiting for them.

Every foster deserves that kind of care.
