Don't let the grey face fool you - Smokey can still have some pep in his step during a game of fetch! His ball returns might be a little more casual and chill, but that just means you might get in a few less tosses in compared to a game with the younger models. (We think saving your arm a few throws is kind of a win, though. Don't tell our young, energetic fetch pups we said so 😅)

Mabel wants to wish you a "Happy Paw-lidays!"

This little one was part of the group of six malnourished puppies that came in earlier this month. She's enjoying her holidays in a loving foster home and is gaining weight!

Mabel just wanted to drop in to let you know that our shelter is closed today, Wednesday, December 25 in observance of the holiday.

We guess Barkley's breed can now be marked as "Doodle" 😂

He recently got the artsy treatment and clearly his cuteness was perfectly captured! According to some of his besties here at the shelter, Barkley would best be described as an excitable, loving companion. His ideal day involves a good play session or a brisk walk together followed by lots of cuddle time!

Our Vaccine & Wellness Clinic for December will be by appointment only. This means shorter waits and a streamlined experience for you and your pets. 🐶🐱

Friends, this year has challenged us in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Capacity—simply having the space and resources to meet the needs of pets who rely on us as their lifeline—remains an ongoing struggle. Just this week, we reached our highest number of dogs in care in SEVEN YEARS. Managing this level of need is no small feat, but it's a reminder why our mission is so critical and why your support means everything.

A special story to share today!

Back in April, we asked for your help to get Tyson, a sweet and spirited pittie mix, the specialty surgery he needed to open his airways and help him breathe easier. Because of our compassionate supporters, Tyson is now enjoying a life of love and leisure in a new home.

When Tyson arrived at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County, he was struggling to breathe due to brachycephalic airway syndrome—a common condition in certain breeds that makes it difficult to enjoy even the simplest moments of being a dog.

Thanks to our donors, Tyson underwent life-changing airway surgery to repair his breathing passages. The surgery was a success, and Tyson can now run and play without constantly stopping to gasp for air.

"Tyson is doing great and has settled in nicely," his adopter said. "He enjoys the property to play and lounge in the field. He is a great pooch, and thinks he rules the roost."

Your kindness doesn’t just change lives; it saves them. Tyson’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference you make for pets in need every day!

UPDATE: As we were typing, SEVEN MORE PUPPIES ranging in age from 7 weeks to 11 months old arrived as strays. The number of intakes is taxing our staff and volunteers, as we scramble to provide the best and most compassionate care. Please consider helping any way you can. We appreciate you all!

Last night, we shared that a large group of pets were on their way to our shelter as the result of an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.

From this investigation, we took in 36 dogs and 23 cats from one location. This puts our shelter above critical capacity levels. We now have over 150 dogs in the shelter with almost 100 in foster homes, the highest number in SEVEN YEARS.

Here's how you can help:

🐾 Foster: Open your home temporarily to a dog in need. We’ll supply everything you need—just give them a place to rest.

🐾 Adopt: If you've been considering adding a furry friend to your family, now is the perfect time.

🐾 Help Us Manage Intake: If you've found a lost pet, please try to locate their family before bringing the pet to the shelter. Most pets are found close to home—post on local lost-and-found groups, talk to neighbors, or check for tags or a microchip.

🐾 Donate: Donations are urgently needed to continue providing care for the nearly 60 dogs and cats rescued from this ongoing animal cruelty investigation, and the thousands of lost, injured, and neglected animals the shelter helps each year.

🚨 BREAKING: ANIMAL RESCUE IN PROGRESS 🚨

An estimated 35 dogs and 20 cats are on their way to our shelter as the result of an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.

The arrival of these pets pushes us to a critical capacity level, with our team already caring for 126 dogs in the shelter. These additional dogs mean we must resort to temporary kennels and this level of capacity creates additional stress for the animals, staff, and volunteers.

We'll share more details on this case as they become available, but we urgently need your support in the coming days. Here’s how you can help:

🎉 A huge THANK YOU to our incredible community! 🎉 Because of YOU, 37 cats went to wonderful foster homes during our Pop-Up Cat Foster Event on Monday! 🏠❤️ We’re also thrilled to share that the remaining 65 cats from that initial intake found foster homes with our amazing existing foster parents. A special shout out to our dedicated staff, volunteers, and amazing fosters who made this event such a success! Your hard work, compassion, and teamwork helped make it all possible. 🙌💙 But the work isn't over yet! On Monday and Tuesday, we received 35 more cats (including these cuties 😍) from the same location, bringing our total to 100 cats in need of care, and we’re expecting another 10 to 20 soon. 🙏 Your support makes all the difference. Together, we’re creating space for more animals and giving these cats a second chance. Thank you for stepping up in such a big way! 💕
