After we experienced a plumbing issue in June, our Adoption Lobby had been damaged beyond repair. But, instead of letting the setback stop us, we envisioned an opportunity to make this space work better for our community, our staff and volunteers, and the animals we care for.

So, you may see some differences when you visit over the next few months, but don't worry, we will still be here providing all of our regular services! Adoptions will still continue out of our temporary Adoption Lobby in the West Entrance of the building, but our Pet Food & Supply Pantry will now be operating out of a storage pod on the back side of our property. We will have plenty of signs and personnel to help you find your way!

We appreciate the flexibility of our community and the ingenuity and resilience of our staff and volunteers as we rearranged areas, drafted plans, and now have begun construction. We're excited to share updates as construction progresses and can't wait to welcome you into our new space!

💚🐾 Last week's adoption numbers! 🐾💚

Over the last week an amazing 170 dogs, cats, and rabbits went to new, loving homes! Including the famous affectionate feline, Creed!🐶🐱🐰

Thanks to our adopters, that isn't just 170 lives changed over the last week, it means space and resources to continue to help every pet that comes to us in need. It's a ripple: when we help one, we help many. That's The Rescue Effect! 💚

A very special 🐾💚Saturday Happy Tails!💚🐾

Last month, 84 cats and kittens were removed from an overcrowded home and brought to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County for immediate care. Some of the cats were sick, some were underweight, and many were just a few days old.

We're happy to share that 40 of those cats, including Dior and Deku, have been adopted into loving homes, where they are coming out of their shells, exploring their new spaces, and getting endless cuddles.

Several are currently available for adoption at the shelter and can't wait to meet their future families! The others are in foster homes, where they’re continuing to heal and grow until they’re ready for adoption.

Someone call the CDC! That smile is infectious 😷 😁 😍

Meet Oberto! This sweet, wrinkly dude can be a little shy when meeting new people. But give him just a few moments to settle in at his pace, and his big, goofy personality will start to peak through! 💚

When Oberto is comfortable, he just melts into head and chin scratches. The best is when he gets really excited about something and his playful, silly side shows up with play bows and that fabulous grin! 😃

A Jack of all trades 🛠️ 💼

Clearly, Jack has mastered being a Construction Supervisor, a Romance Novel Cover Model, a Treat Mediator, and a Professional Napper!

This hunky, shy guy has been blossoming in his foster home! When he first arrived, Jack was shy around people but his dog pals have helped him feel more comfortable and safe.

When Jack isn't busy being a total beefcake, he enjoys sunbathing in the yard, daintily picking up tennis balls, and spending time with his canine friends. He's really just a mellow guy that loves having dog siblings!

Jack has even been around feline friends in his foster home 😸

Meet Ben & Jerry! 🍦 This duo are slow-churned vanilla pitties with espresso & chocolate swirls. Why slow-churned? Well, because good things take time and while Ben & Jerry can both be a little shy, once they warm up their sweet personalities are worth the wait!

Ben & Jerry aren't a bonded pair, but they'd be perfect if you were already looking to have a two-dog household. They've been to dog play groups here at the shelter separately and we've seen that Ben tends to be the more mellow and relaxed of the two. Jerry is more animated and can be a little more brave than his counterpart. 💚

Our tribute to gain the queen's favor 🙇 👑

Cleopatra may have a face meant to judge mere mortals, but behind that intense gaze is really just an anxious girly (who else can relate? Cuz we sure can 👀) The noise of the shelter environment has been a lot for this orange lady, but our volunteers and staff have been making friends with lots of squeeze tube treats and taking things slow.

With some soft words of affirmation, treats, and patience - Cleopatra rewards you with her affection. She is a regal beauty ready to rule her new kingdom! 💓

This month don't wait for disaster!

The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is partnering with American Red Cross Northwest Region to bring you tips for keeping your pets safe in the event of an emergency.

We believe pets are a part of the family, as does Red Cross in Pierce County. That is why all Red Cross shelters in Pierce County open their doors to both humans and their pets.

Disaster doesn't wait for you to be ready. Take September, the national month of preparedness, to come up with a plan for the whole family.

A few weeks ago, these two cuties went home and while they aren’t from the same litter, you’d never know it! They’ve become the best of friends and are so happy together.

Brieoncé LuLu Fondue (formerly Betty) and Madame Lavender Swiss (formerly Fluffy) are settling in beautifully and bringing their new family so much joy. 🧀💜
