You can help keep local pets in their homes and fed by donating a bag of pet food today.

Due to the increased demand in October (serving twice as many visitors as the previous month), we only have the resources to support one more month of Pet Food & Supply Pantry visits. With over 115,000 Pierce County residents losing SNAP benefits, we want to be able to continue to support our community members with this crucial resource that keeps families together.

Biggest needs:
๐ŸพDry dog food
๐ŸพDry cat food
๐ŸพWet cat food

Thank you for your support in feeding community pets.

The polls are closed and the votes have been counted, Tacoma's first pet mayor is Nacho the cat!๐Ÿ˜บ๐Ÿพ

Nacho will be a resilient Mayor for all pet kind in Tacoma. He knows what it's like to overcome hardship and prove people wrong. Nacho was rescued through a trap-neuter-release program, but because of his injuries, he wasnโ€™t able to be released back outside. He had a broken tail that needed to be amputated and a spinal injury that made his future uncertain.

But six years later, Nacho has proven to be a true fighter. After physical therapy and lots of patience, heโ€™s able to run, jump, and live life to the fullest with his orange sister, Cheddar.

Thanks to this year's mayoral candidates, we raised $14,335 for our spay & neuter program.

Everyone please give a warm welcome to your new pet mayor, Nacho!

It's National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week!

We want to take this time to thank our amazing staff members that make our mission possible.

Their dedication helps connect families with their new pet, manage our community support programs, provide direct care to every pet in the shelter, support all of our volunteers and fosters, assist community members with lost and found pets, and so much more!

If you'd like to share a message of support or thanks to our team, please drop it in the comments below โฌ‡๏ธ

Animal welfare can be difficult and emotional work and as an open admission shelter, our team sees a wide range of situations: from cruelty case investigations to lost pets reunited with families years later. It's their strength and determination that allows their impact to be felt far beyond the walls of the shelter, into the homes and hearts of our area.

We are so grateful for our staff and the work they do every day for the pets and our community ๐Ÿ’š Without their compassion and expertise, we couldn't help thousands of pets and the people who love them every year.

Our work for animal welfare doesn't stop when people and pets walk out our doors.

The Pet Food & Supply Pantry is a program where we offer free food and supplies to pet owners. This keeps pets fed, relieves stress for pet owners, and allows for pet ownership to be accessible. Meaning pets stay with the people who love them.

In September alone we gave our 15,716 lbs. of food to our community. We are anticipating this number will grow come November with 900,000 Washingtonians at risk of not receiving SNAP benefits.

If you're feeling generous, we are always accepting donations to help fill our pantry. Check out our website for more info: https://www.thehumanesociety.org/services-resources/pet-food-pantry/

Our Story

We save the most vulnerable animals and โ€œMake Happy Happenโ€ for more than 10,000 pets each year. We are a local nonprofit, not affiliated with other Humane Societies, and dependent on private donations to fund our work. When you make a gift to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, you are saving the lives of homeless pets in our community.
