Fostering Saves Lives. If you’ve ever witnessed an animal deteriorate in their kennel, you know how unbelievably heartbreaking it is to watch. Jazzy was not doing well in her kennel at the City of Tallahassee - Animal Service Center. Despite best efforts to help manage her kennel stress by staff and volunteers, she needed more. She needed help. She needed someone to step up and save her. A call to action was issued to the shelter's foster team and the most amazing foster home stepped up for Jazzy.

Jazzy has made great strides in her foster home. The shelter now knows she is great with dogs and cats, low energy in a home setting, crate trained, and non-destructive in the house. She sleeps on the couch all day while her foster ma works. She is happy to sleep in her crate at night, a separate room, or in bed with you. Jazzy is a snuggle bug, enjoys sunbathing, and zoomies in the yard. The shelter also knows Jazzy did very well living with a 7 year old for a month from a prior adoption. Jazzy’s one quirk is she is potty-shy and needs a backyard to do her business – who could blame a gal? She just doesn’t want to go potty on leash.

Fostering is such an essential part of the shelter’s operation. No animal requests to live in a shelter kennel. And the truth of the matter is some dogs manage the stress of a shelter environment better than others. And then there are some that no matter how short their stay at the shelter may be, they deteriorate fast.

Lives like Jazzy’s are saved because of the incredible foster team at the shelter. Unsung heroes that open more than their homes, but their hearts, so that broken animals can heal and get a second chance at a life they never knew they deserved.

ASF is proud to support the shelter’s foster program, and thanks to the kindness of our supporter’s we can provide foster animals with heartworm treatment through our Heartworm Help Program, specialized medical care through our Vet Visit Program, enrichment supplies, and training support in homes thanks to a partnership with the generous & talented team at Morgan's Dog Training.

Foster a Pet Month may be coming to a close, but the need for foster homes at the shelter remains high, as an empty kennel at the shelter does not exist and many more dogs just like Jazzy deserve a chance to shine in a foster home.

The more members of our community that step up and join the shelter’s foster team, the more foster homes we can help support, and the more lives we can help save. It’s an incredible village to be a part of, truly the rarest of honors.

If you’re interested in helping the shelter save lives like sweet Jazzy, apply to foster today by visiting https://www.talgov.com/animals/asc-foster.

April 23rd is national Lost Dogs Awareness Day. Please remember that Not All Stray Dogs Are Homeless!

When you see a "stray" dog, please don't assume the dog has been abandoned because it's skinny and dirty. Treat them like you would want your own dog to be treated and help them find their way back home.

If you've found a lost dog we're here to help you get them back to their owner. Here are tips to reunite them with their family:

In class we discuss using a pay scale. What that means is things your dog is MOST willing to work for to things that are still rewarding! Using a higher pay scale for distracting and harder environments is like getting paid more in life for harder jobs! Your pay scale can be subject to change throughout your dogs life. However, I think it can be good to check in and see what your dog’s current pay scale is. Can you name 5 things (highest to lowest) for your dogs personal pay scale? I’ll list Braxton’s below…
1. Tug toy
2. Stick
3. Cheese sticks
4. Bill Jac treats
5. Kibble

All stainless steel used here . even for the cats. Did not know this about ceramic , but they break can't be trusted with things that break , and the dogs would chew up the plastic , so stainless it is.

What do we expect of our dogs?

What expectations do we have for their behaviour?

Under what conditions should they be able to do those behaviours?

What are our expectations about timescale? How long should it take?

It takes a human child around 4 years of practice to become really proficient at walking. Yet we expect our puppies to be able to walk perfectly on lead after a few weeks while very little tuition. What about when they need the toilet and pull until they find a suitable place to go? Do we allow that? Or insist they walk with us perfectly?

Does your three year old, 4 year old or 14 tear old do exactly what you ask or tell them every single time? Does your teenager ever break curfew or take a few seconds/minutes to finish their computer game before coming down for dinner? Yet we expect our dog to come back first time, every time, at speed the second we give an ambiguous and often arbitrary signal to come back with very little meaningful training built on a poor level of reinforcement (no, praise is often not meaningful enough).

Do you jump to it when you are on your lunch break when your boss asks you to do a task? Yet we repeat "sit, sit, sit, SIT!" if our dog doesn't immediately respond.

Can a human child, or adult for that matter, regulate themselves emotionally under any or all circumstances? I regularly get adults, with decades of practice, unable to control themselves emotionally and object to my content or project things which are not there, where scrolling past would be a more peaceful, and I dare say, productive, course of action. Yet we expect our dogs to never have a bad day, never be allowed to say "no, I don't want to do that," always be friendly to every dig and person they meet, never need a moment to assess safety etc.

It takes years, if not decades of active work, learning and teaching for a human to do all of these things in a human world. Unfortunately we don't have our dogs for decades, so let's try to take it easy on them, take the pressure of expectations (and maybe examine why we have them) off them and enjoy them while they are with us.

As I write this, Logan is lying on the bed with me under his blanket. He's around 10 now, he has likely more years behind him than in front of him. I let him up and arrange his blankets when he asks in the morning. I'll never look back on these times in years to come and think, "I wish I'd let him up on the bed with me less."

Cherish, teach, honour our dogs.
