About Scent Evidence K9

CEO Paul Coley founded Scent Evidence K9 in 2012 to help communities and law enforcement agencies improve their methods of locating missing persons by developing innovative and effective systems of scent discriminate K9 training and scent collection technology. Paul is a former FBI Forensic Canine Operations Specialist and has dedicated his entire career to public service

in the fields of education, law enforcement, criminal justice, investigations, forensics, and emergency management. The life-saving Scent Preservation Kit® provides families and caregivers with a way to prepare and protect loved ones before they go missing. The Scent Kit is used to pre-collect a person’s unique scent and store it for up to 10 years. The process only takes a few minutes to complete and allows K9 responders to begin searching for a missing or wandering person immediately with an uncontaminated scent article. Having a Scent Kit prepared in advance increases location success and reduces recovery time. Scent Kits are used by law enforcement K-9 responders throughout the world to locate those with Alzheimer’s Disease or autism who are at high risk of wandering. Scent Evidence K9 provides world-class trained scent discriminate and scent detection K-9s, handler training and certification, and Missing Person Response Protocol training for law enforcement agencies and professional SAR Teams across the U.S. Scent Evidence K9 also developed “The SEKR” Scent Evidence Collection Vacuum that is utilized by K9 Search teams to collect uncontaminated human scent at the scene for highly successful forensics and search applications. Scent Evidence K9 Bloodhound, Stella, won the 2020 AKC ACE Award – Uniformed Services Division for her successes in locating multiple missing persons and suspects for the Tallahassee Police Dept. Scent Evidence partnered with Florida lawmaker, Rep. Scott Plakon, to pass the Bringing the Lost Home Project bill in Florida to increase awareness of wandering risks in populations with Alzheimer’s Disease, related dementia, and autism. Bringing The Lost Home Project implements Scent Kit programs to participating counties that allow these populations to pre-collect their scent and store it for use by responders if they go missing. The project also provides advanced scent discriminate K9 training to agency K9 Units to improve and enhance missing person response. Scent Evidence K9 has partnered with the Florida Dept. of Elder Affairs, Alzheimer’s Association, Dementia Care and Cure Initiative Task Force, and The Alzheimer’s Project to raise awareness about wandering safety and prevention methods and the missing person reporting guidelines. They have also pioneered the integration of drone technology into the K9 Trailing process with the FSU Emergency Management and Homeland Security Department to create greater situational awareness and safer working conditions for handlers and dogs. Banks County GA Bloodhound Team Locates Endangered Man Missing For 3 Days! On October 21, 2024, Corporal Pressley and K9 Becka, a scent discriminate Bloodhound, were contacted by investigators working on a missing persons case in Banks County GA. The information available was that the 49-year-old male with physical, medical, and possible psychological disabilities had not been heard from in three days. Evidence on scene suggested the missing man may have walked into the wooded area behind his residence on Friday, October 18. Corporal Pressley responded to the scene and collected odor from the subject’s bedding using an SEK9 Scent Kit and the absorption method. K9 Becka was deployed in the back yard of the residence and established a trail leading into an overgrown area. Becka trailed past a shoe and two vapes and continued into an area overgrown with kudzu. Becka trailed through the kudzu across areas that were obviously pushed down. Becka trailed past a single $1.00 bill lying in the kudzu and then over a red t-shirt. After making a few loops in the kudzu, K9 Becka pulled through briars so dense that they had to crawl approximately 50 yards into more open woods. The trail led to the left down the hill toward a large creek. Becka continued along the bank of the creek occasionally pulling into the water. The trail led the same direction as the water flow for about a half mile (walking distance weaving in and out of brush and water was approximately 2 miles). After trailing to an area under a bridge on Hwy 441 the trail was called to give K9 Becka a break. Becka showed strong interest in the water and far side of the creek pulling back upstream. After the break, the K9 team relocated back to the residence and redeployed. After showing the same behavior Becka was cast further downhill to the right of the original trail with the intent to check the immediate area more thoroughly and attempting to pick up on any trails leading back upstream on the far side of the creek. As they worked the hillside, K9 Becka gave a sudden change in behavior and began trailing downhill towards the creek. Becka pulled hard down the hill for about 200 yards and located the missing man lying down beside the creek. The man was able to sit up as they approached. K9 Becka pulled to him and gave a positive alert by sitting beside him with her tail wagging. EMS were notified and family members were able to reach the scene with an ATV for extraction. The man was found covered from head to toe in scratches with visible injury to multiple parts of the body and appeared to be dehydrated and hypothermic. K9 Becka was rewarded with excited praise and dog treats. Temperatures overnight from Friday through Sunday were in the high 30’s-low 40’s. The subject did not know how many nights he had been in the woods.
This is the Banks County GA Bloodhound Team’s second find in just over a week. Cpl. Pressley is a Scent Evidence K9 Master Handler and has many missing person recoveries and suspect locations to his credit. Congrats and Great Trail Cpl. Pressley and K9 Becka and Thanks to the Banks County Sheriff’s Office for their commitment to creating a safer community.
