🦌 New Law in Louisiana! 🦌

LDWF extends its gratitude to Governor Jeff Landry for signing Act 272 into law, as well as the Louisiana State Legislature and Representative Dewitt for the passage of HB 802.

🔍 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝟮𝟳𝟮 recognizes the ethical responsibilities of hunters to recover game they’ve taken and provides for a legal method to do so. Licensed hunters or trackers can now:
▪ Pursue a mortally wounded deer (legally shot) using lights and a blood-trailing or tracking dog.
▪ Dispatch the deer with a handgun if found alive (excluding LDWF Wildlife Management Areas).

🚫 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: To prevent misuse, certain rules apply:
▪ Only one dog per tracking party in pursuit of the wounded deer.
▪ A second dog allowed for deer retrieval training.
▪ Tracking dogs must be on a handheld leash or use a GPS tracking collar.
▪ A mortally wounded deer discovered alive after legal hunting hours may be dispatched by using a centerfire handgun with a barrel no longer than six inches and a caliber between .25 and .45.
▪ Licensed hunters or trackers can follow a mortally wounded deer onto private property if they have landowner permission.

📅 This law takes effect on August 1.

Though it may look like something out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon, the punt gun was a real weapon used to hunt ducks in 19th-century America. The length of a car, the punt gun could fire up to a pound of ammunition at a time and kill an entire flock of more than 50 ducks in a single shot.

I get asked all the time who trained Gus. This is where I sent him and I have Tuff on the list to be trained also. There’s not a better trainer around anywhere in the USA if you ask me! If you’re wanting your pup trained he’s the man to do it but you better message him quick before he’s all booked up! Devall Catahoulas

Went to find one tonight. Gus wasn’t picking up on anything so I was taking him for a loop to get past where the hunters had already grid searched and I heard the hunter holler my name and that he found him. Turns out the deer went right and we were thinking left so that’s where I took Gus. Either way the buck was found and we have a happy hunter. The lady that got him had to leave before I got there but we called her and she was PUMPED! It’s her biggest buck to date. Congratulations Ms Brandy. I see many more bucks in your future with Mr Bill!

Got a phone call on way home from first track and went to help another friend. Snowing like crazy and everything frozen solid. Including me but it didn’t slow Gus man down. Congratulations Shawn.

No luck. Thinking was a back whack and the deer will live.

22 degrees. Sleeting and snowing. What are we doing? We’re loaded up headed to find one for one of my old teachers! Wish us luck. Hopefully pictures to come soon!

Coyotes found our first buck before we got there. Mandy found a boys first deer! And my last one took Gus almost 3 miles to put the brakes on but we finally got him! Made it home. Time to unthaw a little! We’re frozen solid! Congratulations to all the hunters today!
