This is a picture taken with my phone through the eyepiece of the microscope. When I poke a mass on your dog or cat ( or rabbit!) with a needle and aspirate cells, this is what I am trying to sample. These are cells from a tumor of a specific type I cannot identify without a surgical biopsy. Fine needle aspirates are a crucial tool to w**d out the benign masses from those that need surgery. I will let you know what the biopsy report tells us.

The view is a pregnant porcupine. She was brought in for a possible leg fracture from Carbon County Environmental Center. The X-ray looks funny because she is positioned with one hind leg in the air and her pelvis so we could see the leg bones in question. She does have a poorly healed fracture of her tibia and fibula- they appear gently bent, but the injury is old. She’s probably been living with her leg just fine for a long time. The photograph is her recovering from light anesthesia after the X-ray was taken. Anesthesia is necessary to adequately position a porcupine for X-rays. The baby is very close to term, and the X-rays will not harm it. Thanks for making my day Franklin!

What are the chances? We had a second who swallowed a straight needle this week! Things usually happen in 3’s to us here at the hospital, but we really don’t want to see this again. Luckily, this sewing needle was lodged very far back in the dog’s tongue and was removed fairly easily once she was anesthetized.
