Putting my dog training business on hold for a while. I will train limited hours, private & group when in town.
Do continue to check in; I will be posting advice and product reviews to enrich your pooches.
The summer heat is upon us but this shouldn’t stop you from walking your dog. Each day, at the crack of dawn, I strap my Fitbit, leash Marley and off we go on a 1.5 mile sprint walk. You up for the challenge? 🏃🏽‍♀️🐕

Thank you Mary Ann, for your kind recommendation. Ellie May is all grown up and so gorgeous.🐾

“Sylvie is like a family member now! Having completed 2 levels of training with her for Ellie May, our German Shepherd, I would highly recommend her to everyone. She has that balance of unconditional love for animals and a firmness that German Shepherds need to be trained. And Ellie loves her! She responded quickly to her training and Sylvie gave me measurable goals that I could reinforce during the week. I trust her completely with my fur baby.”

Thank you Helene, for this very nice recommendation. 🤗🐕‍🦺🐾

“Where do I begin, we were at our wits end when we first adopted Nigel , he was found as a stray so zero background on him . Long and short he was horrible ! Growling, barking, extremely destructive. With Sylvie’s help and guidance Nigel is now a sweetheart of a dog. Sylvie’s methods are done with patience, hands on, positive re-enforcement. She has the patience of a saint, and is extremely knowledgeable. Sylvie changed my life and Nigel’s forever. I highly recommend her.”

Look who graduated on my final day at Petco…Mr. Nigel. So proud of this beagle and his very, devoted mom. Nigel used to enter my classroom extremely excited; jumping on me and pulling on his leash, almost tearing mom’s arm off. Now he walks in, waits at the door and sits for his treat; yay Nigel🤗🐕‍🦺
I am continuing to help families train their companions through my business, Tails for Success. My business partner Kelli helps with boarding and daycare at her 2.5 acre property. Keep checking in for updates on training classes and workshops and please spread the word (best compliment is a referral).
Big congratulations to Nigel and owner Helene for completing Adult Canine 2 and for working so hard. I’ve made two new friends; a good looking beagle and his super nice mom .

So proud of these two graduates.🐕🎓
Daisy (Sh*tzu) is so eager to please and works hard for her treats, especially hot dogs.
Jewel (Lab mix) has come a long way from being overly excited to sitting pretty for a WAIT.
Now that the basic cues are in place, I hope more training is in the future to practice the three D’s; distance, distraction and duration.

Look at these two awesome graduates🎓 🐾.
Charlie (Aussi with icy, blue eyes) and Rebel (Shepherd mix with the cutest ears) just completed Puppy 1 group class. They started very young so it was important to set them up for succees with every cue. Their families will continue to practice the basic cues; Sit, Come, Wait, Heel, Leave It, Off and Leash Manners. We will be teaching Pup 2 at our New Tampa outdoor location in July. Outdoor training adds Distance, Duration and Distraction.

It’s National Pet Week & Be Kind to Animals Week (May 1-7).
In our home, we celebrate every day. Our dogs get home-made treats (and Starbucks Pupuccinos), go on sniffari walks daily, enjoy monthly camping trips, playdates at home, doggy daycare and lots of one on one play. We share an incredible bond. I wish the same for you and your pups. 🐾🐕🐕‍🦺

SENSORY ENRICHMENT:
Let your dogs smell and notice all things on their daily walks. This morning, my dog used all her senses. We got to see wildlife with very controlled reaction. Why? Because she’s becoming descensitized to the outdoors and learning to enjoy the sites and animals. On the way home, we practiced training cues; come, watch me, leave it, wait, heel. Marley was more receptive to training after a freedom walk.

Took my dog to exercise and socialize at PetsOver in Zephyrhills today; the crème de la crème of doggy daycares. This property has 2.5 acres of fenced, shaded yard; a haven for dogs. The owner Kelli, requires all dogs to be UTD with vaccines and supervises outdoor play so I know my dog is in good care. There are two fenced in areas within the fenced property to separate new dogs for quick and proper introductions. I also like that the packs are small; 2-5 dogs at once. If you live in the area and need doggy daycare or boarding, I highly recommend Kelli at PetsOver (see her business card; last picture below).

Beautiful morning with our pack. Thank you Wesley Chapel Pack Walk- Tails and Trails. The dogs were very active today as were dogs in my classes this week. Full moon was a week ago. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Many pet owners report behaviors from their companions during this phase of the moon, ranging from nervous to completely reckless. Or perhaps they’re all ‘over the moon’ happy. 🤣🐕‍🦺🐕🐾

Yay, Louie the Italian greyhound graduated his private training class this evening. So eager to please, Louie definitely works for treats but loves his momma’s praise. We practiced all the cues including leash manners and Louie is doing exceptionally well. I am very proud of this team. Bravo!🙌

Congratulations to Sadie, Nestle and Beamer; Puppy 1 graduates. Didn’t think we could get pictures with the grad hat but this goes to show they’ve mastered their STAY cue. These pups learned their basic cues; Sit, Down, Come, Wait, Stay, Leave It, Off, Heel. My parting advice? Lots of Freedom/Sniff walks with daily practice of basic cues.

Our Adult Canine 1 class graduated this evening. These dogs and their dedicated owners have been working very hard for six weeks. Daily practice for proper leash manners is imperative. With lots of sniffing allowance prior to training, I’m sure Nigel, Mia and Snoopy will master their walks in due time. 🙌🐕‍🦺🐕🐾

SOCIALIZATION
The earlier the better but never too late. Get your pups desensitized to people & dogs by exposing them regularly to other dogs/pets, kids, workers around your home etc. I’ve been boarding, fostering, rehabilitating and training dogs for years so my personal dogs were exposed from day one. They’ve seen dogs of all sizes come and go in our home. We always have ‘other’ pets that we train to live harmoniously as a pack as well.
Here are a few tips/suggestions for socialization…

1- Invite a friend to bring her dog
on a walk with you & your dog.

2- Join a weekly PACK WALK.
For you local Tampa folks, I lead a free pack walk every Saturday morning with Wesley Chapel Pack Walk- Tails and Trails.

3- Join ROVER.COM and board an occasional easy going, well socialized dog; your dog will have company and you’ll make a few bucks.

4- HAVE PEOPLE OVER often and tell them to keep a ‘poker face’ so not to excite your dog. It will get used to people coming in and out of your home.

5- My dog goes to two different DOGGY DAYCAREs weekly. There, I’m sure the dogs are supervised and UTD on vaccines, including Bordatella. Great way to socialize and exercise.

6- FOSTER a dog. Who knows, you may find a companion for your dog to grow with (or not). I fostered for eight years. My first foster was my only ‘failed foster’. Domino is now 14. He’s seen hundreds of dogs growing up. He became so descensitized that I made him an AKC therapy dog for Alzheimers patients.

7- Sign up for a GROUP TRAINING CLASS so your dog can train with a pack. It’s never too late. Already took a class years ago? Take a refresher course.

8- Slap on an ‘IN TRAINING’ HARNESS on your dog and take him out in public everywhere allowed. People will ignore your pup while it becomes descensitized and more confident to the outside world.

9- Walk up and down the isles of Home Depot, Lowes, Petco, Petsmart, Rural King, Tractor Supply and camping stores. Don’t forget your ‘In Training’ harness.

All of these exercises are great bonding experiences for you and your dog. Get the family involved and enjoy yourselves while descensitizing and training your dog to become a confident member of society.

Camping with our dog Marley this weekend. Doing lots of trekking on fabulous trails. For the outdoor enthusiasts, watch for ticks. Just found one on Marley. In class, I always talk about body handling and feeling your dog all over after nature walks. Make sure to check the warm areas; armpits, inside and behind ears, groin. Check between toes for prickly burs and fire ants.

Love this new hands-free leash. Gives Marley 6 feet of freedom on her neighborhood sniff walks. $11.95 today on Amazon. I tie it around my waist. These are during and after walk pics. A tired dog is a good dog!
Don’t forget your treats for recall practice while walking.

ENRICHMENT treats and meals…
Freeze your treat toys and give them when you’re leaving the house. Put their meal in the crate to occupy them while you’re walking out the door (helps with separation anxiety). Use these as jackpot treats after a training session. I usually load these up on Friday nights to give on Saturday morning while I blissfully sip my coffee (or else I have 4 pets steering at me to be fed and there goes my chi time).

ENRICHMENT:
I’ve started to give Marley Sniff Walks, a.k.a. Freedom Walks around the neighborhood; she gets to stop and sniff as much as she wants. What usually takes us 20 minutes to walk in our community now takes 40. I use the hands-free leash tied around my waist to give her more distance. She is EXHAUSTED when we get home. I’m incorporating some training; WAIT & COME. She waits when I stop to have a sip of coffee, at the end of a sidewalk, when I need to pick up p**p etc. I ask for a COME when she’s very focused on a squirrel, noise etc. Make sure to use a variety of high value treats on your walks (chicken, cheese, tasty dog treats etc). This type of daily exercise has increased our bonding tenfold and gives her the opportunity to be a ‘DOG’. I don’t bring a phone, just focus on our pleasant walk. Clients that have incorporated Freedom Walks in their daily routine have come back to tell me that training is so much easier.
PS Not the best early morning picture of me but hey, I’m an open book.

Saw this at my client’s house this week. I have the perfect corner for something like this.

Took my dog Marley to Kelli’s for some exercise/play/socialization. Kelli is my business partner and does boarding and daycare. She has an amazing property (I’m always trying to buy it but she won’t budge); a dog owner’s dream. 2.5 acres, fenced and shaded. The dogs love it. I take Marley here twice a week to play with Kelli’s boarders. I also do private lessons here.
