Thank you Tampa Bay Area Pet Resources it’s such a honor to be highlighted as first Trusted Pet Sitter! One of the many reasons I have been trusted for so many years, is because I am constantly using tools and games to stimulate the minds of my furry friends. As soon as I downloaded the Paws and Play: A Dog Enrichment App. I was so excited to see so many of the games I use in one place! And so many more new ones! Every dog is different. So it’s very important to keep such a treasure trove of enrichment for them all! I find them most useful during my medical client stays, however we use enrichment tools like this daily when the pavement is sizzling hot as well. Oh and don’t get me started on puppies 🐶. I honestly believe most negative behaviors can be modified if you just give them the right stimulation their brain needs. Thank you 😊

25 tips for new pet sitters to keep dogs safe and secure!

1. Please remember the #1 rule in pet sitting… “Don’t let the dog out the door!” Even my 7 year old knows this as the most important rule in pet sitting. Because no other rules apply, if you have a missing dog! To extend on this and help avoid these situations. Here is 24 more tips to keep your pet/clients safe………

2. Don’t take your luggage in when first arriving for overnight stays or have your hands full. Make sure hands are completely free to block dog(s)from getting out. And make sure door is securely shut behind you.

3. If there is packages on the porch…. Leave them. You can collect them later when you know the dog is calm and in a secure place.

4. Always ask the client if thier dog is a “runner” or “escape artist”.

5. In meet and greet ask to see the back yard and visually check for any possible escape areas in the fence.

6. Ask if they have firework or thunder fear/anxiety.

7. Ask if the dog has ever got loose before, and if so, where was the first place they went and/or where was the pup found.

8. Stay outside and observe dogs ALWAYS during potty breaks. Not only for escapees. But frankly, there are so many dangerous animals, reptiles, insect, plants and predators in Florida. Hawks, bufo frogs, alligator, armadillo, raccoons, snakes, spiders, etc.

9. Make sure all leashes, harnesses, and collars fit the dog securely.

10. DON’T take pictures, record videos, or take phone calls when walking a dog. This is NOT the time to be making social media videos! And no headphones: or atleast only in one ear.

11. Take the time to develop a bond and allow the pup time to imprint in the first couple days.

12. Ask client what is the pup’s highest priority treat.

13. Always contact the client immediately if a dog gets loose! And take accountability! This is not time for excuses! You need the fastest facts and immediate eyes and feet on the ground. They may have information from cameras and contacts to many neighbors.

14. If you have an employer. Call them immediately too. They will be there in a heartbeat to help on the ground or getting the signs, social media, and making all the calls so you can keep looking. Every moment is of the essence!

15. Make sure you are already approved and excepted on neighborhood pages, lost and found pages, wildlife identification pages, vet response only pages.

16. Vet information and an emergency contact for all clients.

17. Never except dog clients without collars with tags, license, and/or microchip. And make sure they wear them at all times (exception: in kennel)

18. Insurance and bonding for you and all employees or ICs. And Never allow for shared pet sitting outside of your business(ex: client wants a friend, family member, or neighbor to cover some of the pet sitting duties)

19. Always carry owner approved treats on the first few walks, until you know and understand the pups triggers

20. Always cross roads and avoid triggers. Ex: other dogs, cats, bikers, children, etc. and use a barrier like a parked car to block visuals when possible and carry a air horn or animal deterrent (ex: gel pepper spray)

21. Always securely close and lock clients doors . (Double check if code) when taking pups for walks to ensure not only home safety. But that possibly other pets ex: cats don’t escape.

22. Never leave a clients home while under distraction. Answering text, updating clients, taking phone calls, etc. be completely focused when closing and locking up a clients home!

23. Take last update photo for clients before walking out door. This will ensure all pets were accounted for, before walking out the door.

24. Double check gates and doors anytime any maintenance (ex pool, lawn, house cleaners) people leave.

25. Use “double entries” when possible. Ex: lanais, screened in porches, back doors through gates, garages. Making sure first entry is always secure. Before entering main entry to home.

I know that was a lot! But if it just helps one person/client not have to go through the fear, anxiety, or heartbreak of losing a pet. Then the long read was worth with it! And if you are a new pet sitter in the Tampa Bay Area. Please feel free to reach out and I will get you certified for free!

If you are a seasoned pet sitter reading this. Tell me what tips and tricks you use to ensure pet safety from pets getting loose. I would love to hear!
