Hello Tampa Bay Area Dog Owners,
We are fortunate to be fully up and running after Hurricane Milton, and wanted to post some important information, after the devastating storms that have impacted our area. We are also attaching an article from NC that was published after Helene, which could be helpful.
⚠️ Important Post-Hurricane Pet Safety Alert ⚠️
As we continue recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, it’s important to keep our furry friends safe from the dangers that come with standing water. After a storm like this, water can pool in yards, streets, and parks, creating the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and other health hazards.
🐾 Mosquito-Borne Illnesses: Mosquitoes thrive in standing water and can transmit diseases such as heartworm and West Nile virus to our pets. Protect your dog by avoiding areas with freestanding water and ensuring they are up to date on their heartworm prevention.
🐾 Contaminated Water: Floodwater and pooled rainwater can be contaminated with chemicals, sewage, and harmful bacteria. Drinking or playing in this water can cause serious illness for your pets.
Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe:
1. Avoid letting your dog drink from or play near standing water.
2. Empty any containers in your yard that may have collected water (buckets, flowerpots, etc.).
3. Keep your dog on a leash during walks, especially in areas where water has pooled.
4. Ensure your dog’s heartworm and flea/tick preventatives are up to date.
Thank you for looking out for your pets’ safety during this time! If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out.
Stay safe,
The All Dogs Unleashed Tampa Team
Even as standing water evaporates, hazards remain in many areas with dog parks closed and potentially toxic dust left behind by floodwaters.
