Florida friends: checking in. How’s everyone doing? Staying safe in the storm?

08/04/2024

Just a gentle reminder on the importance of being prepared for an emergency. As we watch the updates for Tropical Storm Debby, we are reminded of the devastation Hurricane Katrina wrought to communities in 2005, especially New Orleans.

Nearly 50 percent of those people who chose to stay put during Katrina did so because they did not want to leave their pets. Others, believing they would be back in a few days, left their animals locked inside their homes without enough food and water. Between 100,000 and 250,000 pets were stranded, and between 70,000 and 150,000 animals died.

If anything good could have come out of Hurricane Katrina it is that our pets are no longer excluded from storm evacuations. Representative Tom Lantos (D-CA) and Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) introduced the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act in September 2005. With overwhelming support, it became law in October 2006 (PL 109-308).

The PETS Act amended the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act to require that state disaster preparedness and evacuation plans address the needs of people with pets and service animals. It also authorized the use of federal funds for pet-friendly emergency shelters when needed. States must adhere to these rules in order to receive funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Under these guidelines, more than 30 states enacted statutory instructions for the evacuation, rescue, and recovery of pets during a disaster. Although each state’s mandates are different, most address the following key issues: animal care and response teams, evacuation shelters, and identification of rescued animals.

Florida amended its disaster plan in 2006 to require that pets be included in evacuation strategies during an emergency. Pet-friendly shelters are established ahead of time.

Pinellas County Animal Services will house cats and dogs for individuals with Special Needs. If you are transported to a Special Needs Shelter, their officers will safely transport your pets to Animal Services in Largo. You will be reunited with your pet once it is safe to return home. Make sure you pack their food and medications.

Pet friendly shelters in Pinellas County: Gibbs High School St. Petersburg; Largo High School; Palm Harbor University High School.

How about other counties that will be affected by Tropcial Storm Debbie? Do you know what your local animal services and other municipal services are providing? What is the one tip you have to help other pet parents, especially those who are new to Florida?
Please post here for others, and feel free to share this post.

Our hearts are breaking for everyone impacted by the wildfires in California. We raise our paws to the ones helping those in need, and recognize the first responders in the area dedicated to saving people and their pets.

"One man who was trying to flee the area was forced to leave behind his two dogs and their litter of puppies on Wednesday after his truck broke down. First responders ran 1.5 miles through the fire-ravaged area to rescue the pups. Trevor Skaggs, who is on a search and rescue team at the Butte County Sherriff's Office, found the Rottweilers on Saturday "alive, but tired and very thirsty" - although the adult male dog did not survive. Though the remote area was not immediately accessible as the fire rapidly spread, Mr. Skaggs was flown by helicopter to a nearby point on Saturday and then ran to the location, according to police. After finding the animals, he fed them water and bites from his protein bar, before leading them back to his helicopter. The dogs were later flown to Chico Airport and are now in the care of the North Valley Animal Disaster Group, a local animal rescue organisation."

If you have been impacted by the fires and need help providing veterinary care for your pets, please let us know. We want to help. Paws up to you, Trevor Skaggs. Thank you for saving the rottweiler mama and her babies! You are a true hero!

Frankie’s Friends helped Mamas receive lifesaving surgery for a front leg amputation due to bone degeneration osteolysis, treatment her family could not afford. They said, "I would like to whole heartedly thank you so much for the generous donation on saving my fur bestie... I don’t know what state of mind I would be in right now if it wasn’t for your generous donations - because of you I get to keep her. If it wasn’t for you I would’ve had to surrender her in order for her to get the help she needs even thought it would break my heart. I would have to do that so she could live a pain free life so once again so thank you."

Your donations to Frankie's Friends provide a critical lifeline for pets like Mamas. Please consider supporting our mission today so together we can help save more pets' lives.

Many families love their pets, but can't afford the cost of veterinary care when emergencies arise. We believe they shouldn't have to put their pets down, or surrender them to shelters because of their limited financial means. That's where Frankie's Friends can help. Our mission is to help pet-owners when they need it the most. Rebel's family said, “I can’t thank you enough for your generosity. My dog is my everything I had him since he was a baby, he is my family. The last couple years have been extremely hard for me. Thank you so much for spreading kindness and love.” Together we can help bridge the gap between what's medically possible and financially feasible for pets in need.

“First of all I would like to express my appreciation for the opportunity to apply for help from Frankie’s Friends National Fund.

The decision I made to reach out for help comes from the depths of my heart. My little Angel means everything to me and she is why I get up every morning. It is very important that Angel continues her precious little life in comfort with all the love I can give her.

I am most grateful to the many kindhearted Donors of Frankie’s Friends National Fund for taking the time to consider my situation in asking for assistance.

I wish there was a way to have you feel what is in my heart when I say to all the Donors, I can’t Thank You enough for your consideration and I will graciously keep you all in my thoughts and pay if forward when I am able.

If I am approved I would love to be able to share that result with Frankie’s Friends so the donors can see what help they have given.

Thank You again for your time and consideration.”

Last week our Executive Director had the honor of presenting to the kiddos at Lutz Preparatory School during summer camp on behalf of Frankie's Friends! We talked about pet safety, common emergencies, and what pets shouldn’t eat that can make them sick. We shared lots of stories of pets we’ve helped, like the boa that ate a beach towel and the boxer that ate 7 corncobs, needing emergency surgery to save their lives!

We talked about microchips, keeping pets from overheating, and how to safely approach dogs we don’t know, too. Her dog Tanner was on his best behavior and made his rounds around the room, sharing his story of needing to see a cardiologist regularly for the heart condition he was born with and educating the kids about the fact pets can see veterinary specialists, too.

Thank you vet tech, Nicole Rudd, for bringing a snake and a guinea pig for the kids to pet and helping with the presentation!

We shared the mission of Frankie’s Friends and how we help families who can’t afford the cost of emergency and specialty veterinary care so they can keep their pets when faced with life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

To wrap up a great visit, we all made pet first aid kits to take home and keep their pets safe in the event of an emergency, sponsored and provided by Frankie’s Friends. 🙂
