I haven’t shown these guys yet. I ended up with a group of 5 year brown Burmese mountain tortoises a little while ago. Manouria emys emys. These guys have been a blast to keep and learn about. They are still small compared to how they will end up. Such a cool species to interact with and observe.

In my recent curiosity in amphibians, I have began to work with a few different species. But as time goes on, this species is quickly becoming my favorite. Giant Asian River Toads, Phrynoidis asper. They are a species of true toad that are a large species. Females can max out at 9 inches. The are insectivorous and prefer smaller prey items so they require a lot of crickets, worms, and roaches. Field reports state that this species is never found more than a few meters from a river bank so fresh water is a must.

My experience so far with this species has been a positive one. I believe I have a pair. The male will call periodically and it has more of a faint honking sound as opposed to the usual toad sound. These guys have been reported to have arboreal tendencies in the wild and I have also seen that behavior as well. They seem to be comfortable on a branch or rock as they are in the water.

If anyone has experience with this species or juxtasper, let me know what your experiences are.
