What is the right way to socialize my kitten?

Socialization should always be tailored to the individual kitten. Watch your kitten carefully for signs of fear. If your kitten hides, tries to escape, will not play, or will not take treats, she is overwhelmed. Take her home and try again another day with a lower intensity stimulus. A frightened kitten cannot adjust or habituate.

For some kittens, even a low-level stimulus is too scary. A kitten’s level of fear is affected by many factors, including her genes, her mother’s health, and her life experiences starting from (or even prior to) her birth.

If you notice that your kitten continues to show signs of fear, discontinue the socialization program until you can consult with a professional. Your kitten may be a candidate for desensitization and counterconditioning therapy in which the intensity of exposure is purposefully reduced and is paired with something very pleasant in order to give the kitten a chance to relax and habituate.

Hip dysplasia in pets can lead to a great deal of arthritic discomfort. It's something we think about as our pets get older, but there is something we can do about it while they are puppies!
We use advanced PennHIP Imaging, which requires specific equipment and special veterinarian certification. Using the PennHIP imaging provides us with better information than just an x-ray. In addition to the bones, we can also identify the condition of the surrounding soft tissues, which factor into joint stability.

We can then determine if surgical intervention would be appropriate. Our minimally-invasive technique called JPS (Juvenile P***c Symphysiodesis) can dramatically prevent the development of painful symptoms surrounding dysplasia as your puppy grows and enters adulthood.

Ensure your new furry friend gets the best start in life!

There’s nothing more exciting than bringing home a new puppy or kitten. Your cute, cuddly pet’s first year of life is full of milestones, and our team is here to support you and your furry family member through every phase.

Why puppies and kittens need preventive care
Your pet’s lifelong health begins with regular wellness visits that create a strong foundation. Each appointment supports your pet’s developing immune system and allows us to:

Establish your pet’s health baseline
Identify potential health issues
Protect your pet from diseases and parasites
Provide individualized care recommendations
Create a lifelong relationship with you and your pet

Why are annual dental cleanings important?

Periodontal disease starts with gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). Left untreated, the infection often spreads deeper into the tooth socket, destroying the bone. Ultimately, the tooth becomes loose and may fall out over time.

Periodontal disease describes infection and associated inflammation of the periodontium (the tissues surrounding the tooth). Four tissues comprise the periodontium: the gingiva (gums), the cementum (covering of the root surface), the periodontal ligament (attaching the tooth root to the bone), and the bone surrounding the tooth.

There may be other consequences of periodontal disease due to the loss of bone, including oronasal fistula (a hole from the mouth into the nose), jaw fracture, and abscessation with draining tracts that develop in the mouth, on the face, or under the chin. Some studies indicate that the bacteria from severe oral disease, which gets into the bloodstream, may also be associated with pathological changes in major organs, such as the heart, liver, and kidney.

Today we celebrate every goofy grin, every slobbery kiss, every happy tail wag, and every quiet snuggle that makes life brighter. Dogs remind us daily what unconditional love really looks like. They’re our protectors, playmates, comedians, and constant companions.

At Tampa Bay Animal Hospitals, we’re especially grateful for the dogs we’re proud to call family, some of whom you’ll see pictured here! These furry faces are a part of our story, and we couldn’t imagine our days without them.

Here’s to all the dogs who make our lives less “ruff” and endlessly more joyful. Give your pup an extra hug (and maybe a treat or two) today. They deserve it!
