When we say we’ll treat your pets like our own, we mean it - because we HAVE treated our own! This is Dr. Mayne’s 2 year old pointer, Basil. Even a doctor’s pets can get hurt! On Tuesday, Basil needed a Modified Cranial Closing Wedge Osteotomy (MCCWO).

So, what’s that? It’s a specialized surgical procedure designed to stabilize the knee joint in dogs with certain types of injuries, like cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tears. By modifying the bone and repositioning it, the surgery helps reduce pain and restores mobility, so Basil can get back to running around in no time!

It’s a reminder that our team is here for all pets - whether they’re your furry friend or ours. ❤️🐾

ThumPurr decided he wasn’t ready for the holidays to be over and ingested some holiday ribbon. Our team squeezed him into the schedule earlier this week on an emergency basis and he is back to eating like a champ and stealing hearts. Be careful this time of year with your kitties. They have a soft spot for string of all sorts and it can result in a dangerous blockage of their intestines. Thankfully when caught early it is very treatable with surgery. His moms did a great job getting him seen by his primary care vet immediately! Thank you to Bay Animal and Aquatic Hospital for having us in to care for this adorable kitten!

We had a busy Christmas Eve! Two pups needed fractures repaired and a friends pup was a higher risk spay and needed some extra TLC. Now the team is off to enjoy the holiday with their families for the next couple days.

This sweet angel was found with a distal femur fracture on one leg, femoral neck fracture on the other leg and a pelvic fracture. We repaired her last week (fho on one leg and fracture repair on the other) and this was her at her 5 day post-op bandage change. Dr. Mayne made a visit to The Runaways Animal Rescue Sunday to check on Pumpkin and change her bandage. Look at her little tail going!

Sweet Daisy is a French Bulldog/Boston Terrier mix and ridiculously cute. Unfortunately her Frenchie heritage (while adorable) predisposes her to incomplete ossification of her humeral condyle which can predispose to a fracture. We repaired her Monday and she is already trying to get back to her crazy puppy antics and is on her second e-collar! Thankfully her lick sleeve also helps protect her incision. Can’t be too careful with puppies!

Tulip is a two year old rat who I had previously enucleated last year after an injury. She has been having vaginal bleeding which was not the result of an infection. It is quite common for older rats to develop reproductive disease including cancer. We spayed Tulip today and found a large mass in her left uterine horn. The left horn was significantly larger and darker in color than her right horn. Tulip is recovering well so far and already eating her favorite treats ❤️ Spay and neuter isn’t just for your dogs and cats!

It’s been a fracture filled week! We had the pleasure of repairing Jax’s distal femur fracture this afternoon. Since his fracture was so close to the joint we used a tiny TPLO plate which let us still get three screws in that small distal bone fragment. If he was a bit younger would would have likely elected to place cross pins instead so we didn’t cause issues with the growth plates in that area. Since his growth plates are closed (barely) we gave him a more robust repair! Stay tuned for one that we pinned earlier in the week :)

Sweet Myla had been battling otitis media which led to an abscess over the right side of her face for months. Despite multiple different treatments, cultures and antibiotics she was still dealing with an open abscess leading to her middle ear. Dr. Mayne performed a PECA-BO (partial ear canal ablation and bulla osteotomy) on Myla earlier this week. She is recovering well and already back to munching her hay happily. Yes we know the surgery name is adorable 🙂 Cats and dogs get a total ablation (TECA) but due to rabbits anatomy they get a modified version. We also use clear surgical drapes as much as possible in rabbits to allow the anesthesia nurse better visualization to monitor breathing in these tiny unique patients.

Exciting Update! We have partnered with Dr. Kerrie Lewis, DACVAA to offer the option for anesthesia plan creation OR in-person anesthesia management by a board-certified anesthesiologist. This allows us to offer advanced surgery at your facility with the added benefit of anesthesia guidance/management with Dr. Lewis for those cases which are higher risk anesthesia or have specific concerns. Reach out with any questions or to schedule!

Kerrie Lewis is a board-certified anesthesiologist in the Tampa region. She graduated from The Ohio State Veterinary school in 2009 and also completed her residency at OSU in 2013. After almost a decade teaching in various universities, Kerrie relocated to Tampa to enjoy the sun and expand her veterinary career. She has additionally broadened her skill set to chronic pain management, emergency medicine, exotic companion animal medicine, and general practice; all of which have brought a deeper understanding to the various uses and daily needs of anesthesia in veterinary practice. When Kerrie is not at work, she is enjoying her family life and new baby. She enjoys getting outside for a hike or run and discovering a new restaurant.

This cutie had a terrible comminuted femur fracture that we repaired. The decision was almost made to amputate due to how bad the fracture was but we gave him and chance and are sure glad we did. This was him at his 10 day recheck!

Last Friday we visited Pasco County Animal Servicess to help two sweet pups with fractures. One of those pups is Cairo. She’s a sweet young puppy who was found with a radius/ulna fracture as well as an ilium fracture (pelvis). Despite these fractures being several weeks old which increases the difficulty of repair (delayed due to hurricanes) we were able to reduce both and get her a chance at healing! Her foster mom said she is doing great and that her personality is starting to come out now more that she is comfortable and more ambulatory! We are thrilled for her and can’t wait until she can find her forever family ❤️

When Dr. Taylor with Three Oaks Veterinary Wellness Center experienced a cruciate ligament tear with her own pup she called us to come perform surgery there. Not only did we fix her dogs cruciate ligament but we taught her how to use power tools too! Aubrey is recovering well and getting some extra support with cold laser at her mom’s clinic. Laser therapy can be a great add on for any surgery to help with pain management and healing. We think Aubrey also looks pretty cool in her protective eyeware also ❤️

We were honored to work with Fox Tales Florida last week to help get sweet Daisy back on her feet. Earlier in the week she got her foot stuck in something in her enclosure and fractured her tibia. We repaired the tibia and sent her on her way in a Lick Sleeve to prevent her from licking her incision. Foxes especially hate e-collars so this has worked great for her! We are happy to report she has been recovering well so far 🙂
