Betsy the Beagle A2493616 is a 12-year-old, 21.8-lb intact female who came to PRC after being reported as hit by a car and unable to use her hind end. Even with her injuries, she has remained calm and tolerant during handling.

On exam, Betsy has age-related lenticular sclerosis, severe dental disease, and well-developed mammary glands, consistent with being an intact senior female. Her heart and lungs sound normal on auscultation, and her abdomen feels soft with no masses. She is nonโweight bearing on her left hind leg but has no visible wounds.
Her bloodwork is overall unremarkable aside from a mildly low hematocrit. Sedated radiographs show an enlarged but still normal-range heart shape for her age and mild age-appropriate lung changes. Her abdomen appears normal. The major concern is her pelvis: she has a fractured p***c symphysis with multiple fragments and a fracture of the left ischium just below the acetabulum. These injuries make it very painful for her to bear weight.
Betsy is resting comfortably for now, but she will need strict cage rest, ongoing pain control, and time to heal. Surgical intervention may or may not be needed depending on her progress, but she will absolutely need a rescue committed to monitoring her, supporting her recovery, and ensuring she remains comfortable.
She has remained quiet and comfortable in her kennel and has been consistently eating and drinking well. She is now urinating and defecating normally.
A mass with discharge has been noted on the left caudal mammary gland, and she is currently nonโweight bearing on her left hind limb. She can bear some weight on the right hind with sling assistance. Her fentanyl patch has been replaced, with removal scheduled for 11/24, and staff are encouraging gentle movement each day.
Despite her medical needs, Betsy remains calm, sweet, and cooperative for handling. She is in need of rescue placement to ensure she can continue receiving care, monitoring of her mammary mass, and support for her mobility.
Betsy is a sweet senior girl who has clearly been through a lot. She needs a safe place to continue healing and a rescue willing to support the next steps in her recovery.
