FROM THE SHELTER
At Pet Resource Center, we’ve recently observed an increase in upper respiratory illnesses in dogs both in our shelter and coming in from the community. Following guidance from our veterinary team, additional testing has confirmed the presence of canine pneumovirus.
Beginning March 12th, we will be implementing a temporary “clean break” for all dogs entering the shelter. Pneumovirus typically resolves within 10-14 days, and once our shelter population has cleared, we will resume accepting new dog admissions.
What you need to know.
In order to help manage the virus, we will allow dogs to be exposed to each other in the shelter in order to spread the illness and start the shedding process. Dogs with symptoms will be treated accordingly. Those without symptoms will be monitored.
Effective Wednesday, March 12th, the shelter will not accept new dogs, unless they are sick or injured or are bite case dogs.
Deep cleaning of all kennels is currently underway.
To reduce the risk of transmission, shelter staff will be divided into two groups, with one group assigned exclusively to the Pet Resource Center and one group to the location where incoming dogs are being temporarily housed.
Dogs located at our offsite location will not be returned to Pet Resource Center until we are confident that no new cases have emerged.
All scheduled dog rescue surgeries will be postponed. Cat surgeries will remain in place.
Dog foster parents will be encouraged to keep their fosters throughout the closure.
This update only affects dog intake. Our cat intake remains unaffected.
Pet Resources will remain open for dog and cat adoptions, reclaims and animals will still be available to rescue groups and foster.
This is not the same illness that we need experienced last year.
Although dog adoptions will continue, PRC asks that adopters refrain from taking their new pet to dog parks, groomers, or interacting with their current dogs for a minimum of 7 days post-adoption. Dogs that are adopted while symptomatic will be sent home with medications as needed. Dogs that are not symptomatic but leaving with an adopter, rescue or foster will be given a written prescription for medication if they do break with illness. As with all respiratory illness, Pet Resources recommends any dog owner with concerns reach out to their veterinarian.
