DID YOU KNOW? SAGO PALMS CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR PET.

Found throughout Southwest Florida, the Sago Palm (also known as Cardboard Palms, Coontie Palms, Japanese Cycad and/or Zymias) is an attractive landscaping accent.

Unfortunately, all parts of the plant are toxic to both cats and dogs…especially the seeds. The palm contains Cycasin, a carcinogenic and neurotoxic glucoside, and their taste may attract your pet(s).

Ingestion of plant parts and/or seeds results in symptoms ranging from excessive drooling to diarrhea to vomiting. Other symptoms may include weakness, seizures and tremors. Severe liver failure often follows, as does death.

Sadly, even when treated aggressively by your veterinarian, the survival rate is only about 50%.

Premier Veterinarian in Tampa FL

Our Philosophy The philosophy at Country Chase is simple: we strive to practice excellent medicine at all times. What does this mean? For us, one of the cornerstones of good medicine is the belief that the physical exam is the most important element of your pet’s continued well-being. Observing and examining your pet is the single most powerful tool our doctors have in the detection of medical problems. Vaccines, which have long been a staple of the veterinary visit, are starting to take a back seat to the physical exam in importance. The latest developments in vaccine science have shown us that veterinary practices need new vaccine protocols, tailored to the lifestyle of your pet. While necessary for the prevention of disease, they are not needed with the regularity that was once thought. Another area of emphasis in our practice is pain management. We know that pets don’t always show pain overtly, and we feel it is our duty to keep our animal companions as pain-free as possible, whether pre-and post-surgically, post-traumatically, or for chronic pain. Finally, our motto says it all: We take the time. Our doctors will always perform a thorough examination of your pet and will answer any questions you have about your pet’s health.
