So much gratitude to Ruth Ellison Laake for asking her friends to donate to our nonprofit for HER birthday! She is so incredibly generous and kind, and we are so incredibly grateful to her for this opportunity, as well as to all her friends who purchased items from our amazon wish list.
I literally cried tears of joy, because I'm not sure anyone has ever done anything so kind for me.
And a big thank you to one of my oldest dearest friends Steven Margolin for the gift! I am so thankful for your support!
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED US! Your gifts are so appreciated and will be so helpful to us so we can better serve the pets of Taos and the humans who love them!

Hello friends. We are at the point where we could use some big fluffy towels (for the pets' comfort as well as for fear free restraint) and some newspaper. Does anyone have some clean used towels or newspaper they could part with? We would be ever so grateful!

Hello my pet loving friends. I want to fill you in on some things I have recently been made aware of.
There is a company called Evette that was founded about 8 years ago as a way for veterinary staff to find temporary positions or relief work (filling in for staff taking vacation, sick time, etc)
It was recently discovered that the founder of this company falsified her credentials, pretended to be a veterinarian in order to gain access to information, accounts, and websites that are only accessible by licensed veterinarians. It was fraud, plain and simple, and she took advantage of veterinarians and veterinary staff in trying to make a buck.
Another is a website called searchavet dot com. They are a company claiming to put worried pet owners in touch with veterinarians via telemedicine and claim to have over 16,000 veterinarians signed on with them. Turns out they are listing many many doctors who NEVER signed up with them so they must be data mining linkedin, facebook, and veterinary hospital websites to fraudulently boost their credibility. Who knows if they are even connecting owners with actual veterinarians?
I'm sure many more companies are doing shady business and as I become aware I will alert you.
I guess my point is that there are now a TON of non veterinary folks that are running veterinary businesses. They are not in it to help pets. They are in it for the almighty dollar, and who they hurt in the process is of no consequence. When they run veterinary medicine into the ground, they will move on to the next money making venture. Corporate ownership of veterinary hospitals was the beginning of this trend, and we in private practice are finding out just how ugly and unethical and greedy they really are.

The mobile clinic gets closer daily to being on the road. Here are some of our latest updates:
the wall mounted anesthesia machine is installed, and we have our oxygen tank. the regulator and attachment hoses are on order.
our wall mounted exam/surgery light is installed.
before we could install these heavy items, we had to reinforce the walls.
we have started moving some of our supplies in.
we will continue to move more supplies, printer, label printer, credit card processors, etc in and organize our small but efficient space.
SO EXCITING!!

So this Giving Tuesday, I'm again doing something that I'm not used to doing: asking for help. All of you that know me well know this to be true.
But I'm having to learn how to do it, as I have a mission that is very important to me and to my community.
We are VERY CLOSE to being on the road. Up until now, our clinic, the trailer, our supplies, our specialized equipment, has all been self funded and we are tapped out and still need some important equipment, surgical instruments, and the dental machine that will allow us to perform proper dental cleanings and extractions.
If you are able, you can use this link to donate to our mission of bringing affordable quality veterinary care to Taos!
Thank you.

DONATION LINK IS IN COMMENTS... for some reason fb won't allow me to put it in the body of the post

As a startup, we need some basic but very important, and expensive, equipment to outfit the mobile clinic. Any help you give will get us on the road that much faster so we can start helping the animals of Taos and the humans who love them!Thank you so very much for your generous donation.Monica Silv...

Creature Comforts: Bringing Heartfelt Veterinary Care to the Taos Area!
Creature Comforts Affordable Pet Care

Founded by Monica Silvers, DVM and Clyde Garner, Monica’s spouse and business partner, Creature Comforts is making it easier for people in Taos and surrounding areas to get care for their pets. The mobile veterinary clinic was designed to deal with common barriers that people in rural communities face, such as limited transportation options, high cost, and lack of local providers.

For the staff at the UNM-Taos HIVE, working with Creature Comforts has been inspirational. Their commitment to compassionate and community-focused care shines in everything they do. Their resourcefulness and determination to serve the most vulnerable members of their community, is a great example of how people can take care of each other in community. In Monica’s words, “I saw a need, and I thought of a way I could fill it.”

With the holidays approaching, there are some things to consider to keep your pets healthy and safe. Some of the more common ailments we see at this time of year are:

Pancreatitis. Dogs are especially prone to pancreatitis after eating rich, fatty foods or table food they are not accustomed to. I know you love your babies, but a visit to the ER is nobody's idea of a good time. In severe cases pancreatitis can be life threatening or fatal.

Gastrointestinal obstruction. Bones, corn cobs, plastic bags that had food in them... these things smell delicious to your pet, and they may counter surf, or eat them if they are dropped, or get into the garbage and scavenge. Pets often require surgery to relieve the obstruction.

Toxicity. Just because we eat it doesn't mean it's safe for our furry loved ones. Onions, garlic, nut butters or anything containing xylitol sweetener, grapes and raisins, apricot pits, and more can be very dangerous or even fatal to your pet.

If your pet is acting unwell, contact your veterinarian immediately. If they are unavailable, contact the closest emergency veterinarian.

We at Creature Comforts Affordable Pet Care hope you and your family have a happy and peaceful holiday season.

At your local garden store, you may be looking for fall flowers to put in your planters to have a variety of different flowers. Lantana may be one of those. Lantana mainly causes vomiting and diarrhea in dogs and cats but sometimes weakness or lethargy can be seen. The ripe berries are less toxic than unripe berries. The berries contain anticholinergic compounds which can cause dilated pupils, cardiovascular signs, and central nervous system signs. These berries can cause more serious signs in livestock.
