The realities of training a dog with severe leash reactivity. Suki and Zinc came to Carytown to meet up with a friend and her new dog, Hoax. Hoax and Zinc were with her when Suki came out, and she came out explosive. Hoax matched her energy and showed some reactivity back during these outbursts. As you can see, she was borderline unmanageable initially. With lots of leash work and redirection, we stabilized their behavior and saw MASSIVE improvements within a short session. Sometimes it’s easier to only show the parts that look good and perfect, but this before and after really breaks down what it actually looks like. In my opinion, one of the most important things every dog should know…Also one of the most common things I see missing when dogs arrive for training.
As humans, we sometimes don’t give these creatures quite enough credit. They possess the ability to make good choices once they are taught boundaries and expectations. Lack of clear boundaries and structure creates a frustrated dog. Frustrated dogs are reactive on leash, selective when obeying commands and many times are downright dangerous when put into situations where they feel threatened or vulnerable.
While the “dangerous” portion doesn’t necessarily pertain to Jade, she was certainly struggling with some defiant behaviors when asked to do anything longer than 3 seconds 😅. Her owner was dealing with lots of reactivity and a dog that just didn’t seem to settle.
