Update on our newest fosters from the abandonment case: All three are doing well. Despite how awful they looked, Hilda and Astrid's wounds are healing very well without scarring. Their natural skin color should fill back in soon.

More (healing) wounds popped up all over Hilda... so we are thinking these ladies were dealing with secondary skin infections from either rat bites or injuries from living among sharp metal trash.

And Piggy McPigface (Mick) is still the handsomest boy ever. We did a photoshoot today for his upcoming adoption post! Mick has 4 of 13 sponsors to help cover his neuter bill. Would you please consider sponsoring this cute boy?

Astrid and Hilda are doing great 🐷🩷🐷 This (mother-daughter?) pair are loving their clean straw plus all the snacks and attention. They are so sweet! Their skin is continuing to heal up nicely. Hilda, the smaller girl, sometimes needs help getting up due to a bad leg. We hope she will gain strength with time.

Their former roommate Piggy McPigface is at the vet getting a much needed neuter. He is quite the ball of hormones πŸ˜…

Another lucky piggy got adopted 😍🐷 It's Piggie Smalls! His new family came out to our rescue last month to find a friend for their piggy Tilly (short for Rototiller). Piggie Smalls caught their eyes and the hearts πŸ–€ He went home this weekend and will start the slow process of bonding with his new sister. Congrats to him and his new family!

Frenchie and Toast got adopted! These very lucky sisters went to their new home on Friday. Their new momma Charlene adopted another shy piggy named Daisy and wanted to get her some friends. Why not add in some more shy piggies? πŸ˜†

We are so very happy for these girls; they had been waiting for their forever home for over 7 months after being rescued from a hoarding case that was finally shut down. Congrats to them and their new family!

🚨 Emergency intake! 🚨 Three piggies in desperate need of rescue arrived here yesterday. Roxann, our Pig Nanny, was helping with an emergency transport when a local pig mom assisting with the transport asked to stop for a welfare check on some pigs. The situation ended up far worse than expected.

Four pigs had been abandoned by their owners on a rental property. The pens were full of trash and large rats. Two had large open wounds on their backs, suspected to be rat bite wounds or severe sun burns. One pig couldn't get up and the landlord, trying to their best to care for these abandoned pigs, was worried euthanasia was the only option for these pigs. The second Blue heard about the situation, she told Roxann to bring these pigs home to our rescue.

A local pig advocate graciously agreed to foster one girl that was separated from the other three. The rest are doing ok so far. One is a young boar and the other two are obese females that likely related. Their wounds, though large, are thankfully not deep so we are treating both girls topically. Being in a clean space without intense will certainly help. All three are eating. We'll share their new names and new photos of their cute faces tomorrow!

Saturday was National Pig Day and, addition to our event at the bar, we also had our first tour of the year! We had over 20 folks come out to learn the history of our rescue plus meet all of our 40+ resident and foster pigs. Huge "snout out" to the Bolitho family for their very generous produce donation and for joining us for the whole day of fun.

We have tours and pig yoga dates posted on our website. Head over to check out our calendar and sign up for events: bit.ly/visitPSR

When you try to get cute photos of your "kids" but they just won't sit still! We are always taking photos of the pigs at our rescue for social media, sponsorship letters, and especially our adoptable fosters so we can try to find them forever homes.

Well, the process works because Frenchie & Toast have been adopted! 🀩 A wonderful person reached out about adding them to their family. Though these sisters have gained so much courage, they still do not accept pets. But the adopter already has a shy piggy and is very patient. These sisters leave for their new home next week 🐷🐷

Pigs & Pints is THIS Saturday on National Pig Day! Check out this flight that Voodoo Brewing Co put together, named after the three resident piggies that we are bringing and our founder. And, a portion of proceeds from every flight sold goes to our rescue 😍🐷

Come hang out with some pigs and drinks at Voodoo Brewing Co in New Kensington from 7 to 9pm. Hope to since yinz there!

When should you reach out to an animal sanctuary? BSAS describes our thoughts so well! We have extremely limited resources: money, time, and space so we need to prioritize true emergencies in our region. And our capacity to help pigs in need changes day to day!

When Should You Reach Out to a Farm Sanctuary?

Farm sanctuaries are dedicated to providing lifelong homes for animals who have nowhere else to turn. We understand that circumstances can change, but it’s crucial to recognize that sanctuaries are at capacity with the overwhelming number of unwanted pet pigs and other farm animals. Sanctuaries should be a last resort for true emergencies and urgent situations only.

This morning, we received a call from someone whose piglet grew (as all living beings do) and is now bored on a couple of acres of land. This is not an emergency. The solution?

Provide appropriate vet care.

Ensure secure fencing for safe outdoor enrichment & proper housing.

Adopt a porcine friend! Pigs are highly social and thrive with companionship.

Farm sanctuaries cannot solve the consequences of impulse purchases or lack of preparation. Taking responsibility for your animal means understanding their needs before bringing them home. Pigs grow, require stimulation, and need proper care just like any other companion animal.

What is an emergency?

Animal cruelty or neglect situations (reported through the proper authorities first)

Injured or stray farm animals with no owner or safe place to go

Urgent medical needs beyond what local resources can handle

A true medical emergency of the owner that prevents them from providing care for their animal

Please help us focus our resources on animals truly in need. Be responsible, be informed, and be compassionate. Sanctuaries can’t keep up with the flood of unwanted pet pigs, and the solution starts with you-guardian & owner.

Thank you for your understanding and for making thoughtful, lifelong commitments to your animals.
