Think your dog doesn't need to be groomed in the winter? THINK AGAIN!
Even if a dog doesn't get a haircut, they should still come in for regular grooming, even in the winter!
One of the main reasons is if the coat is not properly maintained and full of mats, that may leave skin exposed to the cold temperatures, in turn making the dog cold. A fully brushed out and maintained coat will help keep them warm, especially when it comes to double coated dogs.
Their nails don't get as well ground down on the sidewalks or gravel, because to be honest who is actually taking their dog for a walk when the temp is at a NEGATIVE degree! So to keep the feet and rest of the body comfortable and keep the nails at a comfortable length , nails should still be trimmed on a regular basis.
Salt to melt the ice can be very hard on your dogs paws! Salt can get stuck in the hair and cause irritation or even chemical burns on your pets feet if left there! Trimming the hair on the bottoms of the feet and inbetween the toes can help protect their feet.
And lastly, getting baths can help keep the skin moisturized! They can get dry skin just like us in the winter, as there is much less moisture in the air. Even using a humidifier may not be enough. Leave on conditioners can help with this. But also when the dog gets a bath, the groomer can take a look at the skin and make sure its healthy!
We can always do a longer haircut, or even just a neaten up over the winter. Keeping your dog on a regular grooming schedule is good for their health!
