Have a safe and Happy New Year’s Eve! #dogbehavior #dogtraining #enrichment
Rules are important to set for our safety and the safety of our dogs! Teach your dog how to self correct on leash. The antecedent (cue) = feeling leash tension, the behavior = looking back to you and easing the tension, the consequence = anything that your dog enjoys naturally but ideally placed behind where they were going to draw them in that direction! The keys to getting results from this strategy are consistency (reacting to tension by stopping forward movement temporarily), establishing an effective marker word and using it when your dog self corrects, and placing their reinforcement behind where they were going! Of course your dog should be emotionally regulated and have their enrichment needs met before focusing on this part! Set them up for success and practice in places where your dog is capable of doing this first. 🤔You may be thinking, “isn’t walking my dog the same thing as exercise and enrichment?” And the answer is that it depends on what your dog gets to do during the walk! Leash walking can be a structured activity or it can be dynamic and include opportunities for sniffing, exploring and fun! If you want your pup to be on their best behavior during walks it is important to give them enrichment in multiple forms through off leash play, sniffing time, mimicking parts of their natural prey drive and other breed specific expressions of behavior BEFORE walking them! You may also incorporate some of these elements during walks!Want to learn more about HOW? Follow along for more leash walking tips! 🦮Reason number 1 why your dog is pulling on leash: ❌You have not taken the time to teach your dog the skills that they need to keep the leash loose. If you are using your leash as a steering wheel to pull on your dog or giving harsh leash corrections this does not help! It can cause your dog to shut down and disengage from you. ✅Instead, reinforce your dog for checking in with you! Practice a lot in environments where your dog is likely to succeed at first! If you feel that you have done plenty of this and it is STILL not working, then follow along for more reasons why your dog is still pulling on leash!#dogtraining #leashwalking #looseleashwalking #positivereinforcement

You need to lock your leash because: 1. Safety! You can prevent hand injuries and easily drop your leash in an emergency. 2. Control- you can adjust the length of your leash depending on the environment you are in. Give more freedom to your dog in open spaces and shorten your leash in busy environments. 3. Training- you can easily hold your leash in one hand while using the other hand to guide, reinforce and train your dog. Follow along for more leash walking tips! @horizon.dogs. 🦮Leash walking skills and getting started:Here are a few tips: 1. Lock your leash! This is for your safety, preventing injuries to your hand and gives you the ability to control the length of the leash and prevent your dog from accessing things that they cannot have in busy environments. You can allow your dog more freedom in open spaces and adjust the slack depending on where you are! 2. Reinforce your dog on the same side that you are walking them on. This means you hold your leash on the opposite side of your body. Behavior is drawn toward reinforcement. 3. Practice getting your pup in position at first and reinforce them often and consistently next to you as you walk. 🐕Canine Good Citizen test items 1-3 tips: 🐾Test item 1- accept a friendly stranger- Go to public places and work in your dog being calm and neutral at a distance of 10-20 feet as people walk by. Then have a person walk toward you and greet them at a distance of about 10 feet. Reward your dog for calm behavior or for sitting. Gradually allow them to approach close enough to shake your hand. 🐾Test item 2- sit politely for petting- First practice your sit cue and reward your dog for increased duration at home. Then practice outside and in a variety of public settings. Finally practice the cue as someone approaches, giving them instructions to pet your dog very briefly (2-3 seconds) rewarding your dog for calm behavior. 🐾Test item 3- appearance and grooming- gently touch your dog’s ears, paws and other parts of their body and mark and reward them. Next try it with a brush without actually brushing them. Gradually brush their coat briefly while rewarding. Finally, practice with a friend and keep each step brief and successful while monitoring your dog’s body language as you practice. After these skills are completed with food or toys as reinforcers, you can start to gradually fade food reinforcement. Follow along for more tips!
