As you're preparing for another year of therapy dog work, take time to check in with your dog during your visit to make sure they are still feeling comfortable and enjoying themselves. It is perfectly acceptable to end a visit early if you notice any discomfort with your dog. Ending a visit early may prevent an accident from happening and is an important part of advocating for your dog.

❄️Winter weather is coming to the Carolinas!

Be prepared to keep your dog safe!

If you have a small dog or a dog with a short coat, it is a good idea to start helping them feel comfortable wearing their winter coat.

Bring your pup inside at night where they can stay warm.

Clean off ice and salt after walking them outside in and make sure to thoroughly dry them off!

Be safe and snuggle up with your pup somewhere warm!

Why yes my dog would LOVE to say hi, but I’m still going to say “no thank you” and move on. Why?

1. Because I want my dog to learn that every time we see people it doesn’t mean it’s a party for him. I’d like him to continue his focus on us together as a team and not create conditioned excitement and expectation every time we are approached by someone.

2. Because I don’t know what saying hi means to you. Will you politely touch him? Will you allow him space to move away if he wants? Will you put your face too close to his? I don’t want him to have a negative experience so I’m going to avoid that by continuing our walk.

3. Because maybe I feel overwhelmed or stressed in public places and conversations with strangers may make me uncomfortable, so even though you’d like to talk and meet my dog, I’m protecting myself too.

4. Because we’re in a rush and have to get something done quickly.

5. Because I said no. Even social, sweet, friendly dogs and their handlers have every right to say “no” to a request to meet and be touched by people. This shouldn’t just apply to reactive, worried or bubble space dogs. Dogs are not public property, and saying “no thank you” to touching my dog shouldn’t be regarded as rude or unkind, any more than if a stranger asked to hold my baby.

Please normalize hearing “no” OR even better, normalize ignoring more dogs in public. Let them carry on with their handler and admire them from a far. It would do a world of good for dogs and humans everywhere, trust me.

Stopping or suppressing behaviours may seem like it will achieve everything we want but that truth is that it will not.

Behaviour happens for a reason. It is communication. It is telling us that there is something occurring that makes the dog feel they need to show that behaviour in that moment.

Stopping the behaviour might initially stop our 'problem' but it doesn't address that why, the underlying cause and how the dog is feeling. That is what we need to understand before attempting to change (not just stop) behaviour.

Is something scaring the dog?

Are they uncomfortable or in pain?

Are they hungry or thirsty?

Are they able to carry out natural and normal behaviours regularly?

Is their communication and body language observed and respected, so they don't feel the need to escalate their signalling?

Are they bored and need more stimulation in their environment?

Are they over-stimulated and need to learn how to switch off and rest?

These are a (non-exhaustive) points to consider when our dogs do something we find problematic - the why of behaviour is always the first thing we must think about.

🎉The holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate and connect with your family and friends!

😖Unfortunately this can be a stressful time for our pet dogs. With little ones crawling, toddling, and even running around, dogs can feel confused and not know how to get away and feel safe.

✅Set your home and your dog up for success!

👉Supervise all interactions if dog and child are in the same room and position yourself in between them!

👉Set up success stations for your dog AHEAD of time and make sure that your dog feels comfortable being separated during times when you will be cooking, talking with family, or otherwise distracted.

👉Teach everyone in the home to ask first before petting your dog by inviting them over and reading your dog’s body language. If kids or guests cannot do this part, take your dog to their success station.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday season! 🍂🦃🥧

Please read and share from our business owner, Desiree Beauchamp Bales MA, CDBC, LFDM-B, CAB, CPDT, CPC, former K9 Handler for wilderness search and rescue:

As many of you know, I've lived in Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina for 20 years now. This has become my home. The devastation that Hurricane Helene has wrought to this area breaks my heart every single day. From my deck, I can see one of the major floodplains, and as you drive around locally, the piles of debris are everywhere. We're still not able to use the building where the Asheville branch of my business operates.

But it hits me on another level, too. For nearly 10 years, I was a K9 Handler for Search and Rescue. I worked with Rutherford County SAR and with North Carolina Search and Rescue Dog Association, based out of Asheville. I'm not currently active, but my heart is full, and with the teams who are out there.

As soon as we ourselves, and the dogs that had been left in our care, were safe after the initial storm, I volunteered again for Search and Rescue. Because I'm not on active duty anymore, I didn't do much field work, but I was stationed at Gerton, which is the pass over the mountain going into Bat Cave. I was in charge of supplies and logistics for the families who live up in the remote mountains there, which at that time could pretty much only be accessed by UTV. The stories I heard and the things I saw will stay with me for the rest of my life. Watching the situation unfold from the inside there revealed a different need to me: care of the rescuers themselves.

Asheville has been flooded with much-needed humanitarian aid, and for that I am truly grateful. But the Search and Rescue and Fire Rescue teams themselves have needs, as well, and those have gotten less attention. What most people don't know is that these teams are entirely volunteer, and self-funded. That means they have to buy all of their gear themselves. Even if they are connected to a fire department, public funds are sparse and are otherwise allocated (like for fire trucks). That's especially true now with so much need for station repair.

When you do this work, you're used to dealing with harsh field conditions. It's so true that it's actually a joke among the SAR responders: "When conditions get so gross no one else wants to work, that's when they call us!" The conditions of Hurricane Helene, however, are beyond anything before seen. The mud and water that is covering everything is toxic, filled with caustic chemicals, and leaving a stain on the ground where it was. This is eating through boots and other field gear. The debris piles and massive, and the flooding has left ground that looks like it's been bombed.

These responders' gear is shot. I talked to one responder who is on his THIRD pair of boots since the beginning of this incident. High angle (vertical) and swiftwater teams ropes are worn and ragged from overuse. We're nearly six weeks into this disaster, and these teams are STILL in the field.

So today, I'm telling this story to ask for help. I have been in touch with some of the teams that have responded heavily or are located themselves in hard-hit areas, and I've compiled a list of needs. Now I'm asking for your help to acquire that gear for them.

Working with a local fire chief, we've already begun the process of canvassing gear supply companies for donations. We've gotten smaller donations from many companies, and a significant donation from The North Face. We've also gotten 10 UTVs from Kawasaki that should be delivered in the next few days to specific departments who have a great need. But what we've gotten is not enough to meet the need. It's time for a grass roots approach!

If we can get word out, and those who can, can purchase a few pieces of gear or make a donation towards technical equipment - it will add up and we will be able to help those who need and deserve it.

Check out the website I created to explain how to help. Contribute yourself if you can, or share this page so that we can get the word out further. I personally will ensure the gear gets where it is needed most.

Thank you all so much for your help! I can't even express how much this means to these teams...and to me.
