Freeze-Dried vs. Dehydrated vs. Air Dried
Is there a difference?

Many pet food companies are making freeze-dried, air dried and dehydrated raw food to make it convenient for pet parents that want to feed their pets raw food. These types of food do not have to be thawed or kept frozen which saves a lot of time. Another point is by removing all the moisture from the food ,any growth of bacteria, yeast or mold are self contained which allows these type of foods to have a longer shelf life.

Freeze-Dried Food:
When raw pet food is freeze-dried this means all moisture is removed from the food while still keeping the food frozen. Basically, all liquid is removed without moving the food from a raw state. The raw food is first frozen and then processed of low temperature and pressure,liquid is phased from a solid to gas. By bypassing the liquid state , your pet food was never exposed to temperatures above freezing. Freeze-Dried raw is is nutritionally equal to frozen raw food except the lack of moisture.

Dehydrated:
Dehydration is a method of persevering food by removing all moisture making the food products lighter and smaller. Dehydrated pet food is processed at a low heat for a very long time to draw out any moisture in the food. So due to the amount of heat used, the food is not completely raw but it is also far from being considered “cooked”. Dehydrated pet food is still in the category of raw because it contains similar nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and amino acids to that of frozen raw food.

Air-Dried:
Air-Dried food has all the moisture removed by evaporation. The process is similar to dehydration without heat added

These foods do not contain any moisture, this means your cat or dog will need to drink more water to stay hydrated. You can also add bone broth to hydrate these alternative feeding.

All three type of foods are available for dogs and cats 🐶🐱.
