Yesterday was Emmi's birthday!!! It was also her 823rd day in the shelter 💔 we are very certain the only reason that Emmi is still with us is because she wishes to be an only pet. This beautiful girl is super loving, playful, and loyal. She loves to play fetch, loves to lay in the sun, and she just loves to be by your side!!! Emmi has just turned 6 years old. Today we are going to focus on Emmi and finding her a home!!!! The shelter is open daily 12 to 430, stop by and meet our favorite girl!!

7/24*******UPDATE********* Wonderful news! Rufus was pulled today by a local rescue Waggy Butts & Happy Mutts, INC., and we cannot thank everyone enough for sharing his story. We had so many people contact us who wanted to adopt him!
Rufus's journey doesn't end here, though. He will now need a special foster home that understands the unique needs of senior dogs. If you or someone you know has the time and patience to provide Rufus with the care and love he deserves, please reach out to Waggy Butts & Happy Mutts, INC.
Rescuing a senior pup can get pretty expensive, but we truly believe Rufus is worth every penny. He's the most loving, gentle boy and we are so grateful to the rescue that pulled him.

Rufus is 14 and most likely a hospice dog, due to age and medical.

*UPDATE* Tuesday 7/23 Thank you everyone, The offers to help Rufus is amazing! At this time we are waiting for dog/cat test. Rufus did live with other dogs. This does not mean he will be good with all dogs. The shelter he is located at is short staffed and crowded. A dog test is on the list of requests at this time. More then likely will have results by Wednesday
If you are interested in Rufus we suggest going to the shelter to meet him. He is one of 100’s of animals the shelter is caring for. The employees at the shelter are doing the best they can to keep up with the influx of animals. We appreciate everyone’s patience.

Update***We understand people are asking for dog/cat test. As it is important moving forward with placement. A possible dog/cat test will be done as soon as shelter staff is available.
Rufus is located in Atlantic County, NJ.

It breaks our heart to see sweet Rufus, a 14-year-old Labrador, in the shelter after his owner sadly passed away. This senior pup has some lumps and bumps, but the kind staff are making sure he’s comfortable on a thick bed, showering him with love.

Rufus deserves to spend his golden years in a loving home, surrounded by warmth and care. If you are a rescue or have room in your heart and home, please consider opening it up to this gentle senior.

Even if you can’t adopt him yourself, sharing his story could make all the difference. With a little help, we know we can find this special boy a rescue he needs to give him the care he needs.

Officially AHS NEWARK'S #1 Longest Resident! 💔

AKA Dr. Pepper, a fun, chill, handsome boy who is clutching onto hope with the tightest grip. 🥹Over 600 days in our shelter, Dr. Pepper has never had an application or meet and greet despite being dog friendly and great for older kids/teens. 👍Dr. Pep, Peezy and Doc are some of his many nicknames at the shelter, he's known and loved by all here at AHS.💖

🥰Once he warms up to you Dr. Pepper is extremely affectionate, jumping up for pets and being an all around goof ball! 💯He aced his behavioral evaluation and is just searching for his big break out of the shelter!!!

To my human moms & dads, this is what happens to my paws when you take me out in the scorching sun ☀️ when the pavement is so hot !

Remember I sweat through my paws, so in this heat I can’t get rid of my sweat as my paws are burning. Missing my walk won’t harm me. Please let me just relax indoors and take me out when the sun is down🐾

If you see someone walking their dog on hot pavement, ask them to take off their shoes for the remainder of their walk home. Maybe then they'll understand.

Sweet baby Oscar.❤️ He’s the friendliest fella on the planet with a noggin the size of Jupiter. From day 1, we knew Oscar was special. He is the kindest, most patient, tender-hearted dog. We don’t know what Oscar’s past life looked like, but he became an NYCSCR dog after he was abandoned in a locked trash room in the middle of winter, severely malnourished, and covered in sores all over his body. His eyes were a mess and he eventually lost his right eye from the damage, but we love his little perma-wink.😉

If you love big heads, morning cuddles, and a dog who sticks to you like glue, then Oscar might be your perfect boy. He is low-energy, dog-friendly, sweet, sensitive, and snuggly. Oh, but we’re not done! Oscar is fully housebroken, a fantastic walking buddy, quiet, calm, and a quick learner. His foster mama says he has “bottomless patience” and lets her wipe his paws, put him in pj’s, and clean his ears without fuss.🐥

🆘️‼️Foster needed - 3 more days‼️🆘️
Miss Wiggles had her posts shared over 400 times and got close to 500 likes, but still NO ONE has stepped up to foster. 😥💔 She will be done with her board and train program on Tuesday and she needs somewhere to go. 🙏🐾 We don't have any room here at the sanctuary, so we are really hoping an angel will come and help us. We don't know what we are going to do if we don't find anyone. Even if you can only foster for a couple of weeks, that will really help us (and Miss Wiggles) immensely.

Please share, pray, send good vibes, do whatever you can to help us find a home for Miss Wiggles in time.

In order to be considered for Spirit's adoption, we need to meet the entire family and any dogs that you own. ❤️Something I’m sure we all fear is that we end up passing away before our dogs do and they end up scared and confused in the shelter…especially as a senior dog that has spent their life loving and living with their person. For Bentley’s owner, that became a reality a couple weeks ago.

When Bentley’s owner passed away, his next of kin were unable to continue caring for Bentley, so Bentley’s only path was to the shelter. Having lived his whole life with the same human, Bentley is understandably confused about where his person is and when they are coming back for him. But, luckily for Bentley, coming to the shelter meant he was able to receive some much needed medical care to fix a hematoma in his ear that was likely due to chronic ear infections. Now, this boy sits waiting, and healing, in the shelter clinic, hoping that any minute his person is going to walk in to bring him home.

We dont know how to tell him that his person is gone and won’t be coming to get him. We can only love him as he is and hope that a loving home and family is coming for him shortly. He is a clinic favorite and they report he is always calm and quiet in his kennel, easy going, and a totally lovable guy with a really sad story. ❤️‍🩹

If you can give Bentley a temporary quiet foster home to heal his ear, or even better—a home to heal his ear and his heart after his confusion and tremendous loss, please come visit him at Fulton County Animal Services (1251 Fulton Industrial Blvd, Atlanta, GA). Bentley is about 7.5 years old and a small lil guy at 43 lbs. We do not know about Bentleys prior interactions with dogs, cats, or kids, but he has not been reactive in the shelter and you are welcome to bring any dogs or kids for a meet and greet at the shelter!

Flynn is one the longest residents- why?⁉️⁉️

Poor Flynn has been at the shelter over a year! He's one of our best behaved dogs! Flynn is incredibly intelligent and recently graduated obedience training classes from Behavior Plus.👨‍🎓 Not only is he very smart, he's a handsome and social boy who is INCREDIBLY friendly and playful with other dogs. 👍

Flynn is such a great companion and would be a perfect addition to a home with teens and other dog playmates. 🐾One shot is all Flynn needs to convince you he's the one to join your family! Meet him at our shelter in Newark, NJ!😻
