Congratulations to Kristin Felix on your new horse, Stella Rosa. We look forward to great things with you and her in 2025. This is going to be a fun journey. I was able to "test drive" her before purchase.

Braden Johns Update:

“Yesterday ended well. He is stable, unconscious but is needing minimal assistance from the ventilator for breathing. He started breathing late afternoon and has been doing it all night without much help. A good step in the right direction.

We feel everyone’s prayers and look forward to another good day tomorrow 🤍✝️🙏”

Keep Braden in your prayers. He was in a bad wreck at the SBF going down the fence. We play a dangerous game.

Keep Braden in your prayers. He was in a bad wreck at the SBF going down the fence. We play a dangerous game.

Please pray for our friend and fellow trainer Braden Johns who was involved in a serious horse accident this morning at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. We are asking for prayers for a miracle recovery, strength and comfort for his family, and God's protection during this difficult time. 🙏🏼

Fun day at Johnny Flores' giving a ranch horse clinic. We worked in small groups to help riders achieve more.

I'm pretty sure these could be my donks. They are so darn clever and always looking for greener pastures.

This is a longer post but maybe worth your time.

As trainers we sometimes like to post videos, articles and photos for instructional purposes. The video linked in this post is a "what never to do" example. The question posted asked "how woukd you address the kicking behavior?" The answer is: by doing nothing you see in this video. First and foremost, the use of a hoofpick on the end of a stick is about as dangerous and foolish a thing that they could have come up to show the problem. They may have as well walked into a lion's cage and started poking it with a stick to see if it was awake. Of course the horse is going to react defensively. The lion will simply eat you. The second issue is by aggitating the problem area instead of working up to it gently and with yield from the horse things got dangerous fast. Again, think about how to approach the lion.

In the best interest of the horse and handlers safety, they should have started with a soft rope or flag, and at that, a long way from foot...say up by the middle of the rib cage. Some good ground work to help direct the horses feet would have helped immensely. The process is not something that should take months to correct. Done properly, the majority of horses can learn a correct response within a matter of hours, days or at most a couple of weeks.

I remember being called out years ago to help with a horse that would kick anyone reaching for a hind foot. Did it start with the shoer? Not likely, but he got blamed. By the time I got there the shoer wouldn't go near the back end of the horse. I spent about 2 hours that evening getting the horse to not kick and hold her foot up by a soft rope. The next day I came back and did some more work. In the end we got both back feet trimmed and nobody got hurt. Granted the shoer was pretty gun shy about crawling under the horse even after watching me handle her feet a lot. So much so that I needed to finish the trim for him. Not blaming him. He made his living under a horse. He didnt want to be hurt.

My personal lessons learned since then were coming up with all the things I could have done differently or better. Ive gad enough opportunity to practice since that time and my methods have improved. No, I'm not looking for this kind of work anytime soon. My reason is the same as the currently popular post "I wouldn't pass a vet check".

My observation for this video is that someone likely sees themself as an "expert" but lacks the skill or knowledge to help the horse. Instead they are just making things worse. Much worse. I hope they have some humility and take time for some lessons learned by doing it better next time.

For the sake of the horse and until next time.

Adios.
