Our Story
This program is unique from other Owner Trained Service Dog programs. Most programs do not tell you what to expect from each of the classes or give you a timeline for finishing the program. It all depends on what your goals are and how hard to work to achieve those goals. Personally, we like to know what to expect and prefer to have goals laid out in front of me. Our training methods vary depending on the disability of the handler and the personality of the dog. If one training technique doesn’t work for you we will invent another. These dogs are more than simple tools they are our best friends. We require that all handlers be physically able to control their own dog. We use a lot of treats and positive reinforcement training as well as corrections for a balanced approach to dog training. The goal here is for you and your dog to enjoy learning and working together. If your dog wants to do the job he/she will be eager to help you for years to come!
We also do not use the clicker method as many disabled people, are incapable of physically using the clicker. We mark good behavior with the word YES followed by a treat or praise. This program is truly an "owner trained" program. We will guide you and your dog, but you will train your dog. This program is unnaturally fast paced; it is designed to quickly teach you what you need to know to train your service dog. Once finished with the classes take your time training your dog and perfecting his or her skills before returning to take any tests. You are not paying to have someone train your dog for you; you're paying to learn what is required to train your dog yourself. If you are unwilling to do the work yourself this program will not work for you.
