Today is CDT’s 3rd anniversary!

It feels like just yesterday I was celebrating my second anniversary. It’s crazy to think another year has already come and gone.

The past twelve months have been a little slow for CDT, but it’s still be a fantastic year full of fantastic clients!

I try to set new goals every year, but out of last years goals I think the only one I achieved was doing more with my personal dogs. So many of the next year of CDT will be working towards the same goals I set last year which were building up my client base, developing a self paced program, and starting a CGC class.

I want to say a huge “thank you” to all of my clients, both this year and in years past. Yall have been amazing and I appreciate every single one of you!

Why train tricks?

1) it’s fun
2) it builds a stronger bond with your dog
3) you can show off to your friends
4) it improves your skill as a trainer by allowing you to practice in a low stress environment
5) you can earn pretty ribbons!

Any dog can earn trick titles through the AKC, even mixed breed dogs can earn through the Canine Partners program. You just train the tricks, take a video, submit it to an evaluator (me), and earn your title! Super easy, super fun!

Check out the AKC website for more info about trick titles! https://www.akc.org/sports/trick-dog/about-trick-dog/

Today Stanley got to practice some new skills, including “drop it”!

We start this skill with a toy to establish a foundation before trying to use it in real world scenarios.

When I’m not helping other people train their dogs I’m working with my own two. In the past year we’ve done a lot!

Both my dogs earned their Canine Good Citizen and Trick Dog titles. Nya earned her Advanced Trick Dog title and Duncan got his Intermediate Trick Dog.

This past weekend Duncan competed in FastCAT (lure coursing) and earned his BCAT title. He also competed in Dock Diving this summer.

I love working my own dogs just as much as I love working with my clients!

It is commonly believed that if a dog is labeled as a service dog that you can’t do anything about the dog. Well, that’s not entirely true. If the dog is being disruptive, the dog can be asked to leave.

A lot of places will avoid asking someone about their dog out of fear of being sued. The staff of an establishment (not random members of the public) may ask two questions to determine whether or not the dog fits the criteria of a service dog. Those two questions are:

1) Is the dog a service dog?

2) What tasks is it trained to perform?

It’s important to note that the second question doesn’t ask what the individual’s disability is. Asking about the person’s medical history is not legal, but you may ask what tasks the dog is trained to perform.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT IS NOT A TASK. If the owner of the dog says their dog is there for emotional support, that dog does not fit the criteria to be a service dog per the ADA. The dog must be trained to perform a specific behavior that mitigates a disability. Remember, you must have a disability to have a service dog.

Service Dogs, Therapy Dogs, and Emotional Support Animals all perform very different functions.

Service Dogs are trained to perform very specific behaviors that help their handler deal with their disability. To have a service dog, you *must* have a disability. A disability is defined as “a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity” by the ADA.

There is a wide range of disabilities including physical disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, diabetes, allergies, hearing impairments, and vision impairments. Not all disabilities are visible, so it’s important not to judge someone with a service dog just because they don’t “look like they’re disabled”.

There is a common misconception that service dogs have to be registered to be legitimate. This is something handlers often encounter when dealing with access issues, housing issues, or sometimes even health care issues.

The reality is that service dog registries are scams and “do not convey any rights under the ADA and the Department of Justice does not recognize them as proof that the dog is a service animal”. ( Department of Justice )
