Pearl's Place

Pearl's Place Pearl’s Place is a Medical Rescue in Temple TX. Www.pearlsplaceusa.com Our one and only goal is to save Dogs lives. Thank you for Helping us Help them.

Pearl was adopted from the Harker Heights Animal Shelter the night before she was to be put down. Pearl lived with us the last three years of her life and in her honor we have taken in other dogs that in some minds were less then desirable and have given them a new lease on life. Most of the dogs we take in at Pearl’s Place are;
Code Red on the last ours of their lives
Dogs with skin issues. Dogs

that have been in the shelter for long periods of time
Senior dogs that aren’t wanted
Dogs with broken bones that need orthopedic surgery
Hospice dogs needing a place to live their last days

In a perfect world we could save them all, but as we all know we don’t live in a perfect world. Please share Pearl’s Place far and wide, the more people that know our story the more dogs we can help. Ways to Donate

This story is one of hope and reality.

I haven’t shared this case because he was on stray hold and they were in hopes that his owner would come forward.

We sometimes take in these medical dogs that need help NOW and we care for them during their most dire times.

This is Marcus, he was found in a ditch was helped by a Good Samaritan, taken to a shelter, who in turn took him to a Vet, who returned him to the shelter.

Thank you Holly and Happy Tails Ranch Rescue for helping us get Marcus the help he so desperately deserved.

It has been a rough couple of days. Monday, we met Holly at the Vet hospital where Dr. Cochran was expecting Marcus. They immediately put him on IV fluids, ran a full blood panel, gave him a number of additional injections to help to stabilize him. His guy weighted a whole 26 #.

Yesterday, it was decided that he might benefit from a blood transfusion to help him start to feel better. When we are going through this with the dogs, all I want is for them to feel better. To see a little light in their eyes, to see them eat food, just a little hope.

I spent time with him yesterday afternoon. Just talking to him and loving on him. We pray so hard for them to fight. Promising them a better life if they can just hold on.

Unfortunately, Marcus passed last night. The only comfort in loosing him is knowing he was loved. The medical staff gave him everything possible for support. Pearl’s Place gave him a promise that life would get better. Happy Tails gave him a chance by calling us and bringing him immediately to the Vet Hospital.

The rest was up to him and I think he was tired of fighting. He knew he was safe and loved and he was happy with that.

Marcus will be cremated and returned to Pearl’s Place as his final resting place.

The tough part is now we need to raise the money to pay for his 3 days in ICU. It was a situation that we pray for the best and prepare for the worst.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This morning, I wanted to do a shout out to all my shelter, rescue friends and followers.

I know we are all under a great deal of stress. Dogs are reproducing like rabbits. It feels like no matter how hard we work it’s not enough. Dogs are being euthanized for space. Donations are down and the list goes on and on.

Know that we see you!!

One of the largest coping mechanisms for me is i have a strong yet small group of people that i work with. At times our humor gets a little dark, but we make it work.

In saying take a little time for yourself, unfortunately our brains don’t shut off. There is always that desire to help, wherever you are.

My best advice is don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself the Grace that you give each and every dog you love.

Go to a shelter or rescue and see how they do things. I love to go visit Wendy in Bastrop. We spend time looking at all the dogs and just having a little girl time.

In this profession we all have our Hero’s. Sometimes a little change of scenery and a different prospective is all you need to reset your mind.

I’m going to say it again. Keep putting one foot in front of the other, you are making a difference. Take a breath and enjoy the dogs you have with you. Have a cup of coffee while making a post and be honest about what is going on in your heart.

I promise you the haters are going to hate, but the ones that matter don’t mind and the ones that mind don’t matter.

Let’s all take a deep breath and save some dogs!!

Love you all.

When I talk about our Seniors or old dogs, this is who I am talking about.

Most of these dogs have been with us for years. Princess has been here for 5 years.

They all have a story, they have all been let down by humans in one form or another. Most of them came here because they were thought to be hospice or their time was up at the shelter.

This bunch of dogs are all teenagers now and they are here with us until they decide life isn’t worth living any longer.

Let us be their forever..

Moka

This beautiful older girl has been with us a little over a week.

Moka came in as a skin restoration but once she was her it is obvious that there is so much more needing help.

As you can see from her pictures, her hair is following off and her skin was wet and weeping. Using a combination of products and the Hydromassage Ozone bath that issue has started to heal.

Next, Moka has a slight bob to her head, possibly a neurological issue, but that will be diagnosed by her veterinarian.

She is HW+, so she is starting the slow kill process. She is also only wanting to eat wet food, so when she goes in her teeth will need to be checked also.

The biggest heartache for me, is yet another sweet dog used for producing puppies. Used and used with no care, not even HW prevention.

On one hand we watch puppies loosing their lives, because no one wants them. Then, in the other hand we have momma dogs ending up at the shelter, needing thousands of dollars of care.

Would you adopt her if you were walking through the shelter??

I do know there are a few that would, but 9 x out of 10, she would be euthanized. Not because she is a bad dog, but because there are thousands of healthy dogs meeting the same fate.

This Sunday morning I am very thankful for each and everyone of you, even those that make this profession challenging.

Let the healing begin..

Who remembers the 9 Box pups we took in last winter? They were left by someone outside the Emergency Vet Clinic in Temple, during one of our coldest nights.

The hardest thing about Rescue is not always taking in puppies/dogs in bad shape.

I think, one of the hardest things for me is having dogs, that were healthy and happy returned after being given away to someone else and in poor condition.

Remember Woodrow?

This boy was the largest and cuddliest out of the 9. He was sweet and we all believed he was going to an amazing home. We have applications that are filled out by prospective adopters. They have meet and greets and we check in on them.

We received a call from a friend of Woodrows adopter. She wanted to return Woodrow because he was tearing up her house. We had no problem taking him back, other then he should have never been given away. Woodrow should have come back to us.

The pictures after the DNA results are Woodrow in the condition he was returned.

This puppy is 8 months old and only weighs 35 #. I have worked with animals all my life and this isn’t what I expected to be unloaded from a car.

His coat is dull, he was due for vaccinations that weren’t given to him, you can see the difference in the color of his coat where he wore a collar to tight. I was expecting a happier, heavier guy.

When you are explained an adoption Contract and sign one, please know what you are signing. All of our dogs are up to date on all age appropriate vaccinations. The paperwork that is emailed, has all the reminders on it.

I guess, I am truly at a loss for words. I want to be so angry, yet I know he is back with us and is safe until we find him hopefully his forever home. Puppies need even more time than adult dogs. This litter went from their mother, to a box in the freezing temps, to the Emergency Clinic, to us, to an adopter, back to us. Six different placements in 8 months. I sometimes wonder how people treat children or elderly if they can’t even treat an animal with love and direction.

If any one is interested in Woodrow, please reach out to us. He was dewormed, updated on vaccinations and fed when he was returned.

Let the healing continue..
