Many parts of Oregon will see temperatures at or around 100 this week. A reminder to leave pets at home when running errands, provide them with fresh water, and avoid walking dogs on hot pavement/asphalt. If it's too hot for your bare feet, it's too hot for their paws!

With heavy hearts today we said goodbye to one of our best friends, for 17 years Flame brought smiles to all with his layed back attitude and loud rumbling purr. He crossed the rainbow bridge in his favorite bed getting lots of loves and kisses. Rest In Peace our sweet boy.

Another heat wave is forecast for Oregon this week so we want to remind pet owners about some safety issues to keep in mind.

Heatstroke: Many cases of heatstroke happen when dogs are locked in cars with windows rolled up or cracked slightly. Heatstroke is life-threatening for animals. To avoid heatstroke, it's best to leave your pet at home in a cool, shady spot. Symptoms of heatstroke include:
* Panting
* Dehydration
* Excessive drooling
* Increased body temperature (above 103° F)
* Reddened gums and moist tissues of the body
* Production of only small amounts of urine or no urine
* Rapid heart rate

Bloat: At any time, but especially when the temperatures are high, provide your pet with plenty of clean, cool drinking water. This is very important in order to avoid dehydration. However, do not let your dog drink a lot of water before, during or after exercise because a condition called gastric torsion, or bloat, may result. A dog, especially a deep-chested breed like the German Shepherd, can die from bloat. Its stomach may swell and even rotate like a wringing towel, which cuts off blood supply through the stomach.

Burnt Paws: You wouldn't walk barefoot on hot asphalt and neither should your pet. Your dog can get damaged or blistered feet from hot asphalt. Consider walking or running on the roadside or grass, as well as early in the morning, or later in the evening, especially during this heat wave.

Toxic Algae: If you are thinking of going into the water to cool off, be on the lookout for waters that look suspicious—foamy, scummy, thick like paint, pea-green, blue-green or brownish red, or bright green cells suspended in the water column. Warnings are currently issued for the Willamette River (Sauvie Island to Ross Island), Eagle Ridge Park on Upper Klamath Lake, and Malheur Reservoir, but most bodies of water in Oregon are not monitored for algae. When in doubt, stay out! Exposure to toxic blue-green algae can be fatal. Symptoms include:
* Weakness or collapse
* Nausea, vomiting
* Excessive drooling
* Abdominal pain
* Diarrhea
* Difficulty breathing
* Shaking, trembling
* Tremors, rigidity, paralysis

Oregon will be experiencing an extended period of very hot weather over the next week. (Time to head for the beach!) A reminder that it's too hot for pets to be left in cars, even while you're running a quick errand. Please leave your furry companions at home with the AC, fan, cool water and shade. You wouldn't walk barefoot on hot asphalt and neither should your pet. Your dog's paws can be hurt or blistered from it. Walk on the roadside or grass if you can, and try to walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. And, yes, pets can get sunburned, too—especially on their nose or less hairy areas. Do not use human sunscreens on pets. Most are toxic if ingested by dogs or cats. If your pet needs sunscreen, use one that is pet-specific: fragrance free, non-staining, and containing UVA and UVB blockers.
