Chickens love protein-rich snacks, and they’re especially beneficial when they’re molting. Along with a rotisserie 🐓 carcass, here are some other healthy options:
🐛 Mealworms: A favorite among chickens, high in protein and calcium.
🌻 Sunflower seeds: Rich in protein and healthy fats.
🪳 Crickets: Another insect-based snack, packed with protein.
🇬🇷 Greek yogurt: A tasty and probiotic-rich treat.
🥚 Hard-boiled eggs: Crushed or chopped, a great protein source.
🐟 Canned salmon: In water or olive oil, a fatty acid-rich snack.
🎃 Pumpkin seeds: Nutritious and easily digestible.
🌱 Chia seeds: High in protein and omega-3 fatty acids.
Remember that treats should not exceed 10% of their daily food intake. Layer or starter feed should be their #1 food source.

When I talk to people about getting chickens (chicken consultant, if you will) the number one reason they think they can’t get them is:
•They’re too busy or travel too much
Listen 👏 Up 👏 Chickens are the easiest animal to own if you are busy and or travel a lot. There are so many ways to automate the process, and the benefits are totally worth it!
Here’s what we do:
👉We have a run large enough that we don’t have to free range if we’re out of town. The girls just go into the coop on their own at night, and are safely enclosed.
👉Our feeder and waterers are big enough that they don’t need to be filled more than once per week. These @coopworx ones are my absolute favorite.
👉If you’re gone for days at a time, cleaning can wait. Not ideal, but definitely doable. I just give it a good clean as soon as we’re back.
👉As for the eggs, we’ve found that many neighbors are more than willing to collect eggs while we’re gone if we let them keep them. 😉
⭐️ Bonus: I also know lots of people who’ve setup cameras in their coop to keep an eye on things while they’re away. (This is on my todo list!)
Why are you hesitant to take the leap if you haven’t joined the flock party? 🐓 = 🎉 Drop your thoughts below!

Are your chickens getting bored?
Offering enrichment activities like this can help keep your flock entertained and enhance their wellbeing! Happy chickens is our goal, right?! 😉
Chickens have the natural instinct to scratch and peck for bugs and grubs. Throwing down some hay, straw, alfalfa etc and sprinkling a yummy treat will provide hours of entrainment for them.
Have you ever tried this before?

As with most animals, getting on their level is always the best way to gain their trust. I find that if I’m in with my chicks and down at their level, they’re much more likely to approach me.
Reach out your hand and let them check you out first, and then you can graduate to a little tummy rub.
Once they’re comfortable with that, I will slowly lift them up off of the ground and place them down so they get used to me picking them up.

When we build coops we always get asked “how many nesting boxes do I need?”
Well, the rule of thumb is 1 nest box for every 4 chickens! If you have a flock of 12 chickens you would need 3 nesting boxes.
In the past we have offered excess nesting box options to our hens and even in a large flock they still tend to just choose 2-3 to lay in 😉
How many nest boxes do you have in your coop? Do you find your ladies lay in all of them or all cram in one or two?! 😂😜

How to tell which chickens in your flock are laying and which ones are not!⬇️
Naturally chickens go through different stages of laying eggs. During certain seasons and depending on when your chicken molts, it is very typical for them to have a time where they don’t lay any eggs.
Here in Utah our days are starting to stretch out and we are now enjoying the slight increase of daylight hours.
We are starting to see a few more eggs in the nesting boxes which mean the ladies are picking back up again🙌🏻
So when you’re out hanging with your flock next, be sure to pay attention to comb color! You’ll be quickly able to figure out who is paying rent and who is free loading 😉

Magic water for your chicks is essential!✅
I typically skip the packets they give you at the feed store when you buy your chicks and make my own “magic water”. In my opinion it’s better!
Especially if your chicks have been transported over a couple of days, they need the best start they can get and a good immune boost.
✅Adding these simple ingredients is easy AND effective!
✨Magic Water Recipe:
➡️1 gallon of water (for the first few days when chicks are brand new, I use WARM water)
➡️2-3 cloves of garlic (whole or crushed)
➡️2 TBSP of apple cider vinegar
➡️2-3 drops of oregano essential oil
‼️When choosing an oil to add in I recommend sourcing a high quality essential oil. You can also opt to choose fresh oregano or the dried herb especially if you aren’t comfortable using the essential oil.
🍯You can also add about 1/2 cup of raw honey to this mixture if you’d like!
These simple extras that you can add into your chicks water will make all the difference. It will boost their immune systems, improve digestion, fight illness and also helps prevent pasty butt!
Chicks can be pretty vulnerable in those first few days so magic water is a go-to for us! However, you can even give this to your adult chickens too! It reaps benefits for all ages!
➡️Have you made magic water for your chicks before? What do you like to add in your?!

June is here and the heat has arrived! At least here in northern Utah! Chickens can easily get too hot and overheat so it’s important to make sure they have enough shaded spots and plenty of fresh water.
You can also offer frozen or chilled treats such as watermelon, cantaloupe, berries, corn. Pretty much anything!
Frozen yogurt bark recipe:
Spread plain green yogurt on a baking sheet at about 1/2 inch thick. Then sprinkle some fruit of your choice. You can also add in seeds such as chai seeds, flax seeds etc. Lastly, add a little honey or maple syrup. Freeze for a few hours until hard them break into shards and store in a ziplock.
What ways have you tried to keep your flock cool in the extreme heat?
