The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) confirmed a case of strangles at a private facility in Fauquier County, Virginia on March 13th. The 23-year-old mare’s clinical signs included fever, nasal discharge, inappetence, and lethargy. She is reported to be recovering.

On March 12 the EDCC confirmed a case of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-4) case in Fauquier County, Virginia. The 10-year-old gelding presented with a temperature of 104.7. He was subsequently referred to a hospital and admitted into the isolation unit with improving clinical signs. He tested positive for EHV-4 on PCR of nasal swab. (Please note, EHV-4 is a respiratory disease, not the neurologic form.)

Spring is almost here! Which means…it's time to schedule your equine companion to receive their spring vaccinations!

If you are wondering what vaccinations your equine friend should receive, the answer is — There are no “one size fits all” vaccine recommendations. A veterinarian who knows your animal and your management system is your best resource to recommend what vaccines your equine should receive and with what frequency!

While vaccination does not prevent disease in all circumstances, a good immunization protocol minimizes the risk of infection and remains an essential component of responsible ownership. A vaccination appointment is also the perfect opportunity for a yearly check-up of your equine friend and a great way to catch any health concerns early.

If you have yet to contact your veterinarian about scheduling vaccinations, we encourage you to do it soon!

Dr. Sara Verghis treated this pony at the clinic recently with help from Dr. Kaufman and vet assistant, Tori. They injected the pony’s deep digital flexor muscle with botulinum toxin to reduce tension on the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT). During laminitis the pull of the DDFT on the coffin bone causes rotation of bone inside the hoof.

Dr. Paul Anikis is happy to be home and back to work after sustaining an injury while on vacation. Though he has been released from stall rest, his return to full time work will be gradual while he continues to recover. His availability will be somewhat limited in the coming weeks. We’re all pleased to see him back at the clinic, and we wish we him a speedy recovery!
