🐴 Case Study: From Pain to Peak Performance! 🐴
Meet our brave 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse who came to us with increasing reluctance to move forward under saddle. Over time, this escalated to rearing and spinning, leaving her owner concerned and searching for answers.

Through thorough diagnostics, including an endoscopy and a bone scan, we uncovered the root causes: gastric ulcers and kissing spine. With a targeted treatment plan—ulcer therapy and two (2) rounds of PRP injections, as well as Shockwave Therapy for her back—this talented horse made a full recovery.

We're thrilled to report that she's now feeling her best and successfully back in the hunt field! 🦊🐎

This case highlights the importance of listening to your horse and pursuing the right diagnostics to uncover underlying pain. If your horse is showing behavioral changes under saddle, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help!

📞 Call us today to discuss your horse’s health and performance.

🔹WARNING: Spring Grass & Laminitis 🔹
As the weather warms up, lush new grass growth may seem like a treat for your horse—but it can be dangerous!

🌿 Why is new grass risky?
Fresh spring grass is high in sugars (fructans), which can trigger laminitis—a painful and potentially life-threatening hoof condition. Horses prone to laminitis, especially overweight horses, ponies, and those with metabolic conditions (like EMS or Cushing’s), are at the highest risk.
🔹 Prevent Laminitis from Spring Grass:
✅ Limit grazing – Use a grazing muzzle or turnout in a dry lot.
✅ Introduce grass slowly – Allow short, controlled grazing periods instead of full access.
✅ Feed before turnout – Giving hay before grazing can reduce sugar intake.
✅ Monitor for early signs – Heat in the hooves, reluctance to move, or a strong pulse at the Neurovascular Bundle

🔹If your Horse is Lame – get an exam! 🐴

Dr. Allen & Dr. Johns Attend USEF Veterinary Summit

On March 24-25, 2025, Dr. Kent Allen and Dr. Susan Johns joined 28 top veterinarians at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala for the USEF Veterinary Summit. This important event brought together experts from various disciplines to discuss best practices for performance horse care.

Dr. Allen, USEF Veterinary Committee Chairman and FEI Veterinary Delegate, emphasized the need for science-based methods to enhance horse health and wellbeing, stating: “Promulgating rules to protect the show horse is not enough. We must also explore the best practices to ensure their welfare.”

Dr. Johns is the USEF Eventing Team Veterinarian.

Thank you to US Equestrian for hosting this vital discussion! Together, we’re working to improve the future of equine veterinary care.

Is Your Horse Lame? Don’t Wait—Get an Exam!
Early diagnosis is key to keeping your horse healthy and sound!

✔️ Ultrasound revealed LF Inferior Check Ligament Desmitis; a painful, but treatable ligament injury
Treatments:
✅ Shockwave Therapy – stimulates healing and reduces pain
✅ Laser Therapy - encourages soft tissue repair and reduces inflammation
✅ Corrective Shoeing – Provides ligament and tendon support, as well as encourages correct hoof growth
✅ Rehabilitation – Rest and controlled exercise
If your horse is showing signs of lameness, don’t wait! A simple issue can turn into a long-term problem.

🏆 Why Performance Evaluations Matter for Your Horse 🏆

As an equestrian, you know that your horse’s well-being and performance are key to success. But did you know that regular performance evaluations can be a game-changer? Here’s why:

1. Identify Weaknesses: Performance evaluations help pinpoint areas where your horse excels and areas that may need improvement. This insight allows you to tailor training and health plans for maximum effectiveness.

2. Prevent Injuries: Regular assessments ensure that you identify potential issues before they become major problems.

4. Optimize Competition Readiness: Before heading into competition, it's important to know your horse is in peak condition. Regular evaluations ensure that they’re ready physically and mentally, reducing the risk of underperformance or accidents.

5. Build Stronger Partnerships: When you understand the balance between your horse’s physical health and performance, you can create a stronger bond, which directly translates to better communication during rides and competitions.

Don’t wait for the big day to find out if your horse is ready. Invest in their future by making performance evaluations a regular part of your routine!
💥 Keep your horse happy, healthy, and performing at their best! 🐎✨

Did you know that equine ulcers (gastric ulcers) affect up to 60% of horses, especially those in high-stress situations like training, traveling, or competition?

🐴 Common Symptoms:
• Poor appetite or sudden weight loss
• Irritability or behavior changes
• Lethargy or lack of energy
• Teeth grinding or excessive drooling
• Sensitivity to girthing or saddling
🐴 Prevention Tips:
• Provide a consistent, high-quality diet with plenty of forage (hay)
• Reduce stress by keeping a consistent routine
• Limit periods without food (horses naturally graze throughout the day)
• Consider supplements to promote stomach health
🐴 Diagnosis & Treatment: If you notice any of these signs in your horse, consult your vet immediately. Ulcers can be diagnosed via gastroscopy and are treatable with medication, diet adjustments, and stress management.

Take action now to keep your horse happy, healthy, and performing at their best! 🐎❤️

March Madness means it's time to test insulin and glucose levels. Equine insulin testing is important to diagnose metabolic disorders like Equine Metabolic Syndrome or Insulin Resistance, which can lead to laminitis. Early detection helps manage the condition, prevent complications, and improve the horse's overall health and well-being. Give us a call to schedule a metabolic screening (540)687-4663.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), also known simply as Shockwave, is a non-invasive treatment we use daily here at VEI. This treatment uses high-energy sound waves in targeted areas of the equine body to stimulate healing and give temporary pain relief. This method can be used to treat injuries ranging from tendon and ligament injuries, osteoarthritis, neck, back, SI, and poll pain. Most sessions last about 15-20 minutes and will be continued every 2-4 weeks based on the treatment plan provided by your DVM.

We would like to highlight a wonderful addition to our team: Dr. Romina Landazuri! She started her Fellowship here at the beginning of August after receiving her degree at the University of Mexico (UNAM), where she specialized in Equine Medicine. She then went on to complete a Large Animal Internship at Texas A&M, and now we are lucky to have her here with us at VEI, where she has continued to grow her knowledge and skills under the tutelage of our Associate Doctors. Dr. Landazuri would like to continue her career in Equine Diagnostic Imaging. Her interest in horses began back in her first year of Vet School where she stumbled across an equine internal medicine book, and since then, she’s wanted to learn as much as she could about horses and treating them. When she isn’t studying or treating patients, Dr. Landazuri likes to spend her free time visiting new places and watching historical and nature documentaries. We are very proud and grateful to have such a bright mind like Dr. Landazuri as a part of our team here at Virginia Equine Imaging.
