THIS RIGHT HERE is why all of you with “indoor only” cats need to still keep up with rabies vaccination! Right here in central Florida, a friend woke up to find this sweet little creature on her light fixture. Ten percent of bats carry the rabies virus. When trapped in your home accidently, there aren’t many choices for meals. There’s you, and your pets. A majority of rabies deaths in the US come from unknown exposure to bats. You will not feel a bite. 60,000 people died of rabies worldwide last year….

Wow! Super proud of the dedication of our most excellent clients Zoe Raduns & Jorge Macedo, who helped their Cockapoo lose 11 lb in six months by changing his diet of tortillas and table scraps to a high quality dry food and loads of exercise! Look at him now! (Before on the left; after on the right!)

Way to go, Gemma.

Powerful video on canine arthritis!

Nobody should suffer in silence. 80% of dogs over 8 years old have arthritis, which is a major cause of elective euthanasia.

The holidays are the busiest time of year for in home euthanasia. One theory is, people are home more, seeing their pet’s struggles even though they try to hide pain/discomfort. Another is visiting family members notice things in your pet since last time they visited, prompting a hard quality of life discussion. Here’s a great article about trying to make that decision.

https://www.lapoflove.com/how-will-i-know-it-is-time?fbclid=IwAR1-rDuWv-vrCefonfYqfQR2ZvOGXCEpHUwSgoKHUE3Af3hH6BfTHYXKNek

We understand how hard it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet. Out veterinarians are frequently asked "Doc, how will I know it's time for euthanasia?".

Scary statistics - but we really are trying.
As of 2021 there are now 183,000,000 pets (dogs and cats) owned in the US. In 2018 there were 135,000,000.
Our country added FOURTY EIGHT MILLION patients to our profession in 3 years.
In 2018 there were 113,394 veterinarians.
In 2021 there ARE 118,624 plus our dedicated techs and assistants who are floundering under this burden.
Our profession has added 5,320 doctors. That is ONE doctor for every 1000 animals.
Let me say that again: that is ONE DVM PER 1000 patients.
YOU DO THE MATH. If you’re frustrated you cannot get in with your pet, if you’re mad about wait times at ANY vet’s office, if you’re feeling your pet is not getting the attention it deserves, it’s not. Because we can’t. WE CANNOT. Our profession CANNOT statistically support this rate of expansion at this time, in this country. PERIOD.
We are trying. We are drowning. This is inhuman and our profession is imploding. Think about it, human hospitals are not able to handle the sheer magnitude of the sick human population during COVID. And WE (veterinary medicine) are not able to handle how may pets were adopted (or more often) PURCHASED during the COVID pandemic.
This will not go away. These pets will live normal long lives (most of them) and so our profession will not be out of this for over a decade. If you think this “crazy wait time” will subside with the country wide pandemic, think again. There are only so many vet schools. Only so many new veterinary doctors. And endless patients out there…
Please THINK about that before you berate us. Yell at us. Get frustrated with us. Tell us we don’t care about your pet. Please think about that before you decide now is a good time to buy a dog or a cat.
Please think about that when that exhausted veterinary nurse comes to bring your pet inside and you have to wait hours to talk to the doctor. One doctor for every 1000 patients. This is a cry for help and compassion. From the trenches.
Want to help? Be kind. Be patient. Be understanding.
Help us. ❤️

This is why we recommend you get your medications from our verified online pharmacy, Vet’s First Choice / Covetrus. The reason the “other” online pharmacies can sell for so much less is that often they are getting counterfeit products:

https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fperryvillepet.com%2Fcounterfeit-pet-medications%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR131-vtpZiaUm9lbPV7dROHjuTcFMjCSg_P3LtAlE9Gy8R47sFL4f2UVMs&h=AT2t7e4jn0t4MGriFS8y5OmBtwM-mkfrykJAbj6stDw1E67YImcG8i0fY-OF4jx4cRYham2q9LcHndvJ_GzB3M0164GtWArIRUYq1tbZGktKjSPj-UKkttYhh9P7&s=1

Use caution when buying medications online. Some online pharmacies sell counterfeit and/or questionable medications.

“Inside-only” cat in the Villages where owner did not use the recommended flea and Heartworm prevention monthly. The cat was so anemic she was nearly passing out. This can actually cause death but can be prevented. Indoor-only cats are not immune! Video in comments is the amount of dried blood on the cat’s skin due to flea bites/flea f***s.

UPDATE: cat’s hematocrit was only 13%. That is a rate near death! But she is doing amazing today and feels so much better!

Our clinic is still up and running for sick/urgent patients only at this time. We have been postponing routine checkups/vaccines, routine dental prophylaxis, etc and will call those clients once this pandemic threat passes. In addition, we are having clients bring patients out the the truck to be dropped off to us there and we are currently not allowing clients in the mobile vet unit. Thanks for your understanding and stay safe!

Just filled up the mobile vet clinic with gas, which is normally enough for two or three days of calls. For those that have appointments next week, I will be contacting you individually if your appointment will be affected by hurricane Dorian. Now is the time to gather your rabies certificates, get your cat carriers or pillowcases ready to go, and do not panic! Call or email If you need anything!
