When Oscar, a 5-year-old Dachshund, developed partial paralysis from a herniated disc, he became the first dog to experience a new, non-surgical treatment option through a veterinary clinical trial at the Texas A&M Small Animal Teaching Hospital.

The trial, being led by Dr. Nick Jeffery, involves injecting an enzyme to dissolve the herniated disc instead of surgically removing it. This method is faster and less intense than the traditional surgery, and is also much more affordable for owners!

: Did you know a horse with a moderate hair coat starts requiring additional calories for body temperature regulation when the outside temperature drops to approximately 50°F?

Cold weather prompts special considerations for your horse's diet and care, particularly when it comes to the older members of the herd; consult your primary horse doctor to formulate a plan to keep your horses happy and healthy this winter! Great advice!

A friendly reminder!

With cooler temperatures approaching, it is common for horses to decrease their water intake, which can increase chances of colic.

Here are some tips to keep your horses drinking enough water during cold weather –

1. Use heated water buckets or troughs

2. Fill water buckets/troughs with warm water at last feeding

3. Add loose salt to feed

4. Supplement with electrolyte paste

If you are planning to use alfalfa this winter, here is your reminder to check it for the presence of blister beetle prior to feeding it to your horses—especially if you feed alfalfa hay from a new or unknown harvesting source.

"The blister beetle (Epicauta) is highly toxic to sheep and cattle, but primarily to horses," says AAEP member Dr. Benjamin Espy. "As little as four (4) to six (6) grams of blister beetles can be deadly to a 1100-pound horse. Blister beetles swarm in alfalfa fields and are drawn into bales by accident. Even small parts of these beetles are toxic to a horse, and whole insects need not be present to be dangerous. Although cantharidin can exist in the alfalfa used to make pellets and cubes, cantharidin toxicity is very rare by this route. Some people believe that it has to do with the processing, others believe that it’s because the feed companies are using alfalfa from reputable sources that have good insect control."

If you suspect your horse is showing signs of toxicity, call your veterinarian immediately. While there is no antidote for the toxin found in blister beetles, your veterinarian may still be able to save your horse by providing supportive care to combat dehydration, help evacuate toxins from the gastrointestinal tract and delay potential absorption.

You can read Dr. Espy's article on blister beetle poisoning in full on our website at https://aaep.org/horsehealth/blister-beetle-poisoning

Heartbreaking.

This is why we require all adopters give their pets monthly heartworm prevention. We require it not just when someone applies to adopt, but require you prove a history of giving prevention.

ONE mosquito bite started this. ONE. Monthly heartworm prevention is necessary 12 months a year. It takes one infected mosquito bite to cause this. It can happen inside your house or on a 5 minute potty break.

Monthly prevention is the only way to stop this from happening!!

UPDATE 6/14/22: We recognize this post has gotten a lot of attention, shares and comments - which is great! However, with that said, a lot of incorrect and/or harmfully false information about heartworms is being shared as factual in the comment thread.

For more information about what kind of parasite heartworms are, how they are contracted (through mosquitos), why humans don't get heartworms, and why it's important to keep your dog on prevention year-round, please visit: https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-health-literacy/keep-worms-out-your-pets-heart-facts-about-heartworm-disease #:~:text=Heartworms%20are%20only%20transmitted%20by,before%20they%20become%20adult%20worms.

At HVC we provide a very wide range of surgical procedures. In the last few weeks we’ve have a few cases that are not as common. We always enjoy medical cases that are a little “different”. Here is one of our newer patients (4 month old female intact Bloodhound) that in her short puppy life has already had reoccurring episodes with Cystitis due to a conformation abnormality. She has been diagnosed with a defect called hypoplastic v***a (“recessed v***a”). Some patients can be medically managed, while others require a surgery to correct the issue. This girl underwent a surgical procedure called an Episioplasty (vulvoplasty) to correct her conformation and hopefully resolve her reoccurring symptoms.

Especially after events from today, we want to post information on how important it is to vaccinate your puppies against the Canine Parvovirus. We recommend at least 3-4 rounds of vaccines to help build your pets immunity. Parvo is a very serious virus that is highly contagious, difficult and expensive to treat, and can also be fatal.

VACCINES are the best way to prevent this virus!

https://www.medvetforpets.com/canine-parvovirus/

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious, hard to destroy, and dangerous virus affecting the gastrointestinal system. Prevention with vaccines is key.

This tick has been hanging around for us to show people for a while. After months in a sealed container with no additional feeding she laid eggs. This gives you an idea of how long a tick can be dormant and how many eggs one female can lay. Remember ticks bloom again in the fall so keep up with prevention.
