A simple sling- a beautiful drawing from the book “The horse- its treatment in health and disease- 1909”

I love this drawing for its simplicity in showing mechanics, pulleys, slings, weight, gravity, centre of balance. Get one of those pullies/ropes in the wrong place and the horse will tip up on his nose!. Or his nose will hit the ceiling.

This is how I see the workings of the inner foot, the pulley, ropes, springs, pistons, gravity, ground reaction force weight of the horse.

Some springs are super strong with little stretch (Deep digital flexor tendon)

Some springs have super stretch and bounce back- suspensory ligament and Superficial digital flexor tendon.

The pulley being the navicular bone ensuring smooth movement of the DDFT under the joint, plus to ensure its constant angle of insertion into the coffin bone.

The ropes- the ligaments.

The anchor point at the wall- the hoof wall.

There is so much…. And I’ve just touched the very basics…..
