Today during women's history month and on the eve of International Day of Forests, we'd like to feature Rachel Carson. Her book, "Silent Spring," published in 1962, drew attention to the widespread use of pesticides and their detrimental effects on the environment, especially on birds, as the title suggests.

“Silent Spring inspired the modern environmental movement, which began in earnest a decade later. It is recognized as the environmental text that changed the world.”

This book led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides and sparked the movement that ultimately led to the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Seriously ill with breast cancer, Carson died two years after her book’s publication. In 1980, she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

With more people like Rachel Carson, who care and speak out about the environment, we can be Optimistic about the future of our planet.

😁 It's hard not to smile and to be optimistic when you're outside hiking and enjoying nature! 🥾

😥 Did you know that spending time outdoors can reduce stress, anxiety, and even the risk of depression?

🚶Hiking is a form of exercise that releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects.

🚶‍♀️The beauty and vastness of nature can inspire awe and a sense of connection to something larger than oneself.

🚶‍♂️Hiking can encourage mindfulness, allowing you to focus on the present moment and appreciate your surroundings. Hiking can also be a great way to connect with others, whether it's with friends, family, or fellow hikers.

😃 Hiking can provide a natural high, with even a short hike boosting dopamine and serotonin levels, which are feel-good hormones.

⛰️ It doesn't always have to be a 20 mile hike in the mountains, just a walk in your own backyard or neighborhood, a walk around Greatest Generation Park or Amerson River Park can be very fulfilling!

🙂 Come by and see us! We'd love to help you out with some outdoor gear, apparel or just some advice on places to get outside in the Middle Georgia area.

✴️And don't forget about our "Day of Optimism" event, this Saturday!

"There's always a sunrise and always a sunset, and it's up to you to be there for it, put yourself in the way of beauty" ~Cheryl Strayed

This is my favorite quote and I use it quite often, but it is a reminder that no matter how bad things seem, there is always beauty all around us. It's up to us to put ourselves in the way of beauty.

Help us spread the good vibes and optimism, drop by the store and leave a note of optimism and register to win a Bogg Bag filled with optimism. We'd love to see your beautiful faces. 😃 Also, save the date: as we a planning a special Day of Optimism on March 22nd.

Emma Rowena Gatewood, better known as Grandma Gatewood was the first woman to solo hike the entire Appalachian Trail. She thru-hiked the AT in 1955 at the age of 67. Grandma Gatewood was inspired by an article that she read about the trail in an old National Geographic Magazine.

She did not have the best hiking gear or provisions, her gear included an army blanket, a raincoat, a shower curtain, and a change of clothes in a homemade bag which she slung over one shoulder while wearing Keds sneakers. For food, she foraged for wild plants, carried dried meat, cheese, nuts, and dried fruit and depended on "Trail Magic" from locals along the trail.

At her completion of the trail, she became the first woman and 6th person ever to complete the thru-hike. She went on to hike the AT two more times, in 1960 and in 1963, completing her final hike in sections.

Know more about Grandma Gatewood? let us know in the comments.
