*update- the little calico and one of the bobtails have been adopted!
Look at this beautiful woodpecker that came in today! He was brought to us after flying into someone’s windshield and is waiting to be picked up by Broken Feather Wildlife Rehab.
Every wondered what microfilaria aka “baby heartworms” looks like? If a dogs tests positive for heartworms, the next thing we do is look to see if it is also microfilaria positive, and we can do this two ways. The first way is by putting part of the blood sample in a hematocrit tube and spinning it down with a centrifuge before placing a drop of it on a microscope slide. The second way is to place a sample right from the syringe onto a microscope slide. By using a centrifuge to spin it down first, it gives us a better idea of how many microfilaria may actually be present, whereas directly placing a sample onto a slide just lets us confirm the presence of any. The video below is of microfilaria from a spun down sample, and the video and the comments shows them right from the syringe. If you look close enough, you can see little movements in the video, and that is the microfilaria.
Dana, Gabi &Terri just can't get enough puppy love! Can you blame them? 💗
We also have an adult cat, Mitch, who also needs a home. Mitch was found by a Good Samaritan that brought him in and we found out that he had a fracture to his left front humerus. We did surgery and he has made a full recovery! He doesn’t let his leg stop him and is good with dogs.
Who said pets have to be miserable when wearing an e-collar? Hank would strongly disagree and thinks it’s the best thing ever!
Heartworm Awareness Post!
Here’s a video of some microfilaria, which is baby heartworms, that we saw under a microscope this morning. The microfilaria can grow up to cause heart failure in your fur baby! This is a scenario we see far too much here in our office when Heartworm Disease is preventable and is caused by mosquitoes. Remember to give your pets prevention every 30 days!
