Bob Avila passed away on November 9, 2024 at the age of 72. As shock and grief reverberates through the horse community, condolences pour in for his wife Dana Mandala Avila and son, BJ. Greatly respected and beloved by so many, the loss of this icon is felt deeply by all. We at AzQHA will miss him greatly and share in the outpouring of support for his family at this tragic time.

Bob was as versatile and grounded a horseman as they come. He was renowned for raising, training, showing and judging Quarter Horses as well as mentoring, educating and coaching horseman who spanned the ranks of beginners to champions. Bob also had a talent for developing and marketing saddles, tack, and bits. During his career he earned 2 World’s Greatest Horseman titles, was named the first AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year, was inducted int the Hall of Fame for NRCHA and AQHA, won numerous World Championships and futurities. Many of the biggest names in NRHA and NRCHA honed their craft at Bob’s side. Bob and Dana relocated to Scottsdale a few years ago, sharing their unbridled enthusiasm for our equine community at all of AzQHA’s events.

Bob leaves an enduring legacy on the industry he loved, the horses at its core and the countless people with whom he shared his wisdom and inspired to be their best.

Consistency is key..it’s difficult some days. Some days you have to try again tomorrow. But never stop trying.

My weekly motivation came from the Run For a Million & watching Erin Tormino mark a 228 in the fencework of the Cowhorse with a broken leg!

You can do anything you set your mind to.
