Tennessee Equine Hospital West ’s Dr. Cindy Weis shares heat stress warning signs to keep in mind in summer. ☀️

The quickest way and most efficient ways to decrease your horse’s body temperature include:

-Stop all exercise. Remove tack.
-Remove horse from direct sunlight. Get into the shade.
-Place horse where air is circulating – where there is a breeze or create a breeze with a fan.
-Hose with cool water starting at the hooves, working up the legs, over the large muscle groups of hindquarters, back, neck and head if horse allows for as long as needed.
-Offer as much cool, clean water as horse will drink.

Contact your veterinarian in case your horse fails to respond to your efforts and the need for intravenous fluids and medical intervention to reduce body temperature occurs if conditions deteriorate rapidly.

This is why we do what we do. Thank you, Martha Brouse, for the kind words:

"Please accept our sincerest gratitude for saving our beloved mare, Musetta’s Waltz. Dr. Allison Stewart and her team acted quickly and with great expertise in giving her relief throughout the night before Memorial Day and then in surgery to relieve the impacted and twisted colon and 5 lipomas. We are grateful also to Dr. Julia Newsom from TN Equine South for coming to our farm so quickly for the emergency call to stabilize her before her trip in the trailer. Everyone’s quick action led to her success. We are also thankful for the Promise Program which aided in the surgery and post op care. Again many thanks for helping us with our girl!"

Nuchal bursitis (infected or not) or poll evil is an insidious and often chronic pathology affecting horses with pain at the poll region. Medical treatment often fails to resolve the problem and nuchal bursoscopy under general anesthesia is the current gold standard for treatment. Here is Dr. Bonilla performing nuchal bursoscopy STANDING in one of the first patients that received the procedure, which to our knowledge has not been reported before. At TEH, we continue pioneering standing procedures for our patients.

Meet Gamble. He underwent surgery for a complete colon torsion at Tennessee Equine Hospital last month. His owner – Sara Morse – had these kind words to say about the care he received:

“The team and are phenomenal, and though he isn’t out of the woods yet, we thank Dr. Allison and Dr. Wooten and everyone else who helped get him through this. Had we not gotten him there in time, he wouldn’t be here now. Now he needs rest and lots of love and prayers to recover fully. Get well soon, Gamble! 💙”

Do horses have color preferences? The science says they do! Researchers recently explored color preferences in horses based on how much water was consumed from buckets painted one of six colors: red, yellow, green, light green, light blue, and turquoise. The results? It appears that horses are more likely to drink out of turquoise or light blue buckets!

Teeth fractures and tooth infections are common but sometimes hard to find during routine exams. At TEH, we count on the equipment and the expertise of Dr. Bonilla to diagnose and treat them.

This case presented with a draining mandibular abscess. Radiographs revealed that the abscess communicated with the roots of the first molar and that there were signs of infection about its roots. An oral endoscopic exam revealed a mild crown fracture and pulp packing with feed material. The tooth was orally extracted after regional and local nerve block under standing sedation.

Subchondral bone cysts are cavities that form inside bones and under the joint and produce lameness. If not treated early enough, the joint could develop osteoarthritis and be affected for life. The goal of the technique is to promote healing of the cyst and, more importantly, to recover the normal contour of the joint to prevent joint damage.

This case shows the positive radiographic and clinical progression of a medial femoral condyle subchondral bone cysts after screw placement through it. The horse presented to TEH lame at the walk and is currently sound and back in training.

Dr. Bonilla is one of the first surgeons using the screw technique and has performed research about this relatively new technique that has quickly become the gold standard for most equine surgeons in the world.
