Nuchal bursitis (infected or not) or poll evil is an insidious and often chronic pathology affecting horses with pain at the poll region. Medical treatment often fails to resolve the problem and nuchal bursoscopy under general anesthesia is the current gold standard for treatment. Here is Dr. Bonilla performing nuchal bursoscopy STANDING in one of the first patients that received the procedure, which to our knowledge has not been reported before. At TEH, we continue pioneering standing procedures for our patients.

Intussusceptions are uncommon in horses but often seen in youngster associated with parasitism or motility disorders. Intussusception is a term to describe when one part of the intestine telescopes inside another part. In this case, Dr. Bonilla resolves a cecocolic intussusception where the cecum went inside the colon.

Teeth fractures and tooth infections are common but sometimes hard to find during routine exams. At TEH, we count on the equipment and the expertise of Dr. Bonilla to diagnose and treat them.
This case presented with a draining mandibular abscess. Radiographs revealed that the abscess communicated with the roots of the first molar and that there were signs of infection about its roots. An oral endoscopic exam revealed a mild crown fracture and pulp packing with feed material. The tooth was orally extracted after regional and local nerve block under standing sedation.

Subchondral bone cysts are cavities that form inside bones and under the joint and produce lameness. If not treated early enough, the joint could develop osteoarthritis and be affected for life. The goal of the technique is to promote healing of the cyst and, more importantly, to recover the normal contour of the joint to prevent joint damage.
This case shows the positive radiographic and clinical progression of a medial femoral condyle subchondral bone cysts after screw placement through it. The horse presented to TEH lame at the walk and is currently sound and back in training.
Dr. Bonilla is one of the first surgeons using the screw technique and has performed research about this relatively new technique that has quickly become the gold standard for most equine surgeons in the world.

At Tennessee Equine Hospital, our team has the knowledge to be able to utilize special radiographic projections to diagnose and create treatment plans for P3 fractures trying to “hide.”
Fractures of the distal phalanx are a fairly common injury. They can occur at high speed or from kicking a firm object like a stall door or a wall. The fracture produces a sudden onset of lameness and can be a diagnostic challenge.

Distal fractures of the splint bone are really common either after a kick or secondary to suspensory desmitis. These fractures can be treated conservatively, which usually requires 2-3 months of rest, but they may or may not heal well or require surgical removal.
At TEH, Dr. Bonilla offers standing surgical removal of these fractures, which speeds up the recovery process and is more economical than traditional removal as the horse does not need to be placed under general anesthesia.

Braces for horses can save their smiles 🐴
Mandibular fractures in the incisor area are common in young horses after a kick or getting their mouth stuck on a water bucket. Thankfully, most of them can be repaired standing, and they have a good prognosis after using orthopedic wire as braces for a few weeks.

Your horse's hock joints are on their hind legs. Think of the hock joints as similar to the human ankle. These joints allow your horse to carry weight and push off the ground to run and jump.
At Tennessee Equine Hospital, we utilize arthroscopic surgery – a keyhole minimally invasive procedure – to inspect joints and provide treatment, which may include removing bone and cartilage fragments, debriding damaged ligaments and menisci, and repairing cartilage.
