Unfortunately a conversation we have a lot is about how to let a pet go over the rainbow bridge. Just this morning I had this conversation not knowing I would have to walk myself through it this afternoon. So here is my professional and unprofessional opinion.
Saying goodbye to your beloved pet is the hardest day we face as a pet owner, but it is a good day for your pet. No more pain, no concerns, no more medication (that we all know is a struggle to give them), and no more suffering. But for us, it is a day filled with what if’s, did I make the right choice, how do I tell the family, and could I have done more.
The choice to euthanize is hard, but remember it is a choice we make for those pets who saw us through the good times and bad, the births, the deaths, the laughs and the tears. It is a choice for them, not us.
So we smile knowing we helped them with their last phase in life, like they helped us through ours. We laugh at the funny memories, the silly thing they have done, and the trouble they inevitably got into, and we cry because we will not have tomorrow. But ultimately we gave them a life we should be proud of.
So now meet Jackson. I adopted Jackson when he was scheduled to be euthanized, almost 12 years ago. He loved farm life, he loved chasing horses and goats, despite my protest. He LOVED food and belly rubs, and he has seen me through some hard times in life. Today was my turn to help him with his hard day. Although we had so many good days, we mourn the loss.
So long sappy post to say, you’re making the right decision, and we as vet professionals have been there and mourn with you and will give you all the options. But all in all we are here for your pet and YOU!
