Exciting things are happening at Mansfield Animal Care & Control!

May is Chip Your Pet Month and we’re thrilled to announce that, thanks to one of our amazing SMASh followers and Mansfield residents, Mansfield Animal Care & Control now has its very first microchip scanning station — located right in front of our shelter at 407 Industrial Boulevard!

It all started when Caroline Ferguson saw a Facebook post and asked, “How difficult would it be to get one of these?” — a simple question that led to something truly impactful. Caroline passed the post along to us, and because of her thoughtfulness and community spirit, this valuable resource is now a reality.

So, what’s the purpose of the scanning station?
This self-serve microchip scanner allows community members to check lost pets for a chip after hours or on weekends, when the shelter may be closed. It’s a quick and easy tool to help get lost pets back to their families safely and quickly without a shelter stay.

Why is this important?
Microchipping your pets significantly increases the chances of being reunited if they ever get lost. This station makes it even easier for our community to take action immediately, day or night.

Our goal is to eventually have scanning stations placed throughout the City of Mansfield, helping more pets find their way home faster and easing the burden on our shelter.

From all of us at Mansfield Animal Care & Control — thank you, Caroline! Your kindness and initiative are making a real difference in the lives of pets and their families.

Scientists have spotted clumps of blue-green algae near Red Bud Isle on Lady Bird Lake. The algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can be toxic to animals and humans. https://l8r.it/nhUQ

Some folks are uncomfortable with the RETURN part of T-N-R (trap neuter return). Here's an explanation of why we do what we do to help others understand.

There are an estimated 50-80 million homeless cats in the United States alone. Kitten season has begun and millions more will be born this spring. 🌷😔

It's heartbreaking. 💔 But, here is the fact:
👉 There are not enough homes for all of the cats and kittens. 👈

Well-intentioned followers will ask, "Why don't you find that cat a home?". Because there is no space available. 😞 There are THOUSANDS of adoptable cats at all of our local shelters who could potentially die without a home. But people want us to keep pulling any and every cat from outdoors to find it a home. Current population numbers make this an impossible task. But there is hope through spay and neuter‼️

We are grateful our shelter accepts ✅ young kittens. They also do wonderful work for ✅ sick and injured community cats. We are blessed they provide space for those who need it most ❤️‍🩹 and we utilize this resource to the fullest! They have the largest foster program in the area, but even they have limits. Space is not unlimited. Fosters are not unlimited. Funds are not unlimited.

If you are an individual who comes across a homeless cat (or even a whole litter) and you are willing and able to take them in (socialize them, if needed), we encourage you and applaud you! We WANT you to do that, as long as you are able to get those kitties fixed. But if you are that person who was fortunate enough to be able to do that and CHOSE to do that, please don't pass judgment on those who are not able to do the same.

To us, a healthy fixed cat who is returning to a caretaker outdoors is not a failure. We are in rural Virginia 🌳, so when we return, it's not exactly "to the streets". We return to *caretakers* with farms, yards with sheds or porches, houses with trees, etc. They have a home in their familiar outdoor space. They have a caretaker to monitor for sickness and injuries and we are always there should those caretakers need us. ❤️

The RETURN part of T-N-R is necessary for combating the overpopulation problem. Right now, they can't all have an indoor home, but if more people understood the importance of spay and neuter, it could definitely be a goal for the future. 🎉

Microchips work ❤️

We want to share a happy reunification story today of a very loyal dog!
This beautiful girl named Shadow went missing from her home in Normangee about 2 weeks ago when her dad got taken by ambulance to the hospital in Madisonville, she tried to follow the ambulance and went missing. Shadow’s dad didn’t know if there was any hope in finding her. We found sweet Shadow by the Hospital near the ambulance bay nearly 2 weeks after she went missing. Luckily Shadow had a chip and we were able to contact her family. After hearing from Shadow’s dad how she went missing, we can only imagine she was searching for her dad and waiting near the ambulances for him. Shadow was so so happy to be reunited and leaned right into him. She must have been so relieved.
Sweet Shadow was able to be reunited with her family because she was microchipped! Please microchip and register your pets! It makes a world of difference!

Our Story

Charlyne's Pound Puppies is a non-profit rescue group run by volunteers. Our founder, Charlyne McDaniel, began her crusade to help abandoned dogs and cats in 1995. Charlyne's Pound Puppies does not accept owner surrenders. Our commitment is to the animals in the Thorndale, TX pound and those who may have been abandoned at vet clinics or the surrounding countryside.

Families who want to adopt an animal from Charlyne's Pound Puppies are asked to fill out a 2-page applicationhttp://poundpups.org/ppapplication.pdf to tell us a little more about themselves. They will then be interviewed. This is to make sure that the animal is going to a good home, and that he or she is a good fit for the adoptive family. The adoption fee is $100.00 for dogs and for cats which includes a coupon for spaying/neutering if the animal is not old enough to have been spayed/neutered already. (These prices are subject to change without notice)
