TRIGGER STACKING – WHEN BEHAVIOUR HAPPENS “OUT OF THE BLUE”

We’ve all had those days when nothing seems to go right and one frustrating thing after another happens to us, leaving us feeling wound up, stressed and ready to explode at the next unsuspecting person who dares to ask us something.

This “unsuspecting” person may think we have a serious behaviour problem or need anger management therapy, when the truth is that we’ve just had a really bad day or even a few bad days and don’t usually behave like this at all.

Dogs are no different and a behaviour that seems completely out of character or happens “out of the blue” is often caused by “trigger stacking”.

A trigger may be anything that increases a dog’s stress levels and has a negative impact on their emotional, mental or physical state.

These may be small things that we may not even notice or seem insignificant to us, but they are all adding to an increasing “stack” of events that may culminate in out of character behaviour.

When stress levels reach a certain point, the next stressful event, however small, may cause an explosive reaction that is completely unexpected.

Instead of just focusing on a particular behaviour and seeing it as a problem that needs to be prevented, take a step backwards, look at the bigger picture, look at events, circumstances or environmental factors that may have played a role leading up to that behaviour.

Being aware of potential stressors and allowing your dog time to decompress, relax and unwind for a few days will often mean the difference between “normal behaviour” and a behaviour that seems completely out of character.

Fires are currently blazing just east of Bastrop and we are en route to quickly ensure animals in the area stay safe! We’re working directly with Bastrop County Animal Services (BCAS) to help move the 142 dogs out of their care and need fosters to come forward, right now! 🔥

BCAS is currently full and is the only animal shelter for multiple communities, including Cedar Creek, Elgin, Smithville and Bastrop. With the potential of displaced animals coming in, pets at the shelter are at risk.

Here’s how you can help:

🐶 Foster a dog – Head to our main location at 1156 W. Cesar Chavez NOW to meet a dog already in our care. We’re extending our hours until 7pm, and will be open tomorrow 10am-7pm. If you can’t come now but are willing to help foster soon, sign up at https://bit.ly/4fdEW3m

💰 Donate – We’re bringing animals from BCAS into our care and with that, will incur additional costs with transport, care, and ensuring these animals find a home. Can you donate today to support animals in need? Make a gift by clicking the donate button below or visiting our website at https://bit.ly/4hAoFHj

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

An appeal that is always useful to spread and remember...

Temperatures are changing, nights and days are starting to get colder outside, and cats living on the streets are looking for a warm place to shelter.

Touch the hood, slightly kick the tires and honk before starting the car!

Take a minute of your time, but it's worth it, you could save a life!

Today is National Feral Cat Day!

We are so grateful for all you of you who care for these kitties that depend on us so much.

We suggest you do something special for feral cats today... perhaps give your outdoor cats a special treat, make a donation to a group that helps feral cats, reach out to someone you know who feeds or traps cats (TNR) and ask if there is something they need that you could help with. Other ideas?

We do not suggest scooping them up in your arms to give them a big juicy kiss and hug.

💔 Heartbreaking to learn that the Rainbow Bridge in North Carolina was washed away with the floods.

🌈 The Rainbow Bridge is located at the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge in North Carolina. Specifically, it's part of the Flowering Bridge garden that spans the Rocky Broad River, connecting Lake Lure and Chimney Rock.

🐶 The Rainbow Bridge is a special section within the garden where visitors can leave collars, tags, and other mementos to honor and remember their beloved pets who have passed away.

Our Story

Charlyne's Pound Puppies is a non-profit rescue group run by volunteers. Our founder, Charlyne McDaniel, began her crusade to help abandoned dogs and cats in 1995. Charlyne's Pound Puppies does not accept owner surrenders. Our commitment is to the animals in the Thorndale, TX pound and those who may have been abandoned at vet clinics or the surrounding countryside.

Families who want to adopt an animal from Charlyne's Pound Puppies are asked to fill out a 2-page applicationhttp://poundpups.org/ppapplication.pdf to tell us a little more about themselves. They will then be interviewed. This is to make sure that the animal is going to a good home, and that he or she is a good fit for the adoptive family. The adoption fee is $100.00 for dogs and for cats which includes a coupon for spaying/neutering if the animal is not old enough to have been spayed/neutered already. (These prices are subject to change without notice)
